@jimbopumbapigsticks you're absolutely right. In Star trek 2 they should go for esperanto. Subtitled maybe. In english of course. Er.. Federation standard, sorry.
to yall who think its a goof that he can say "v" in "five" and "Chekov" - the "v" sound in those words can easily be substituted for "f" sound and because Russian's phonetic rules are different than ours, that's what he says. The "v" in the beginning of a word, however is different, hence he uses "w" instead. Its actually consistent with a Russian accent
@smibbo AFAIK, the actual rule is that "V" (actually a Cyrillic В) along with a few other letters is pronounced differently if it is at the end of the word, in the case of "V" (Cyrillic В) it's pronounced like "F" (Cyrillic Ф). In TOS AFAIK it was always mispronounced "V" (most probably because back then people didn't know better) while Антон (Anton) actually pronounces it correctly...
@MarbledPaladin alls I know is that I lived with a man from The Ukraine and he had the same style of pronunciation in English. I'm not an armchair linguist and didn't mean to come off like one.
@xTsukiTsuki People are kinda nuts that way. Watch the BBC these days...they've reverted to working class announcers to appeal to the viewership, so we get to hear about how their reporta went to Indier to cover a state visit by Obammer.
I know this is nerdom heresy, but I love the 2009 universe. It took the classic characters and found actors whom, I beleive, portrayed them excellently (obviously the originals hold a special place in every trekkies heart, but still), and gave them the special effects and set pieces they always deserved.
@jimbopumbapigsticks Its called "Federation Standard". If you lived in your mother's basement immersing yourself in Trek "canon," you wouldn't ask such silly questions -- or see a woman naked. Okay, not such a silly question. Time to move out.... MOM!!!
I look forward to the next one mainly because he's in it. And because I <3 all Star Trek, but a good portion of my anticipation is due to this adorable young Russian!
That always killed me too. His name is PaVEL ChekoV, with a V. Why does he have trouble with V's and W's? He will use V instead of W and W instead of V. Do Russians really have this problem? Awesome movie in any case!
@MackenzieMichael No, they don't. There is no logical reason why they should assume a Russian would say "wessel" or "wictor". Russians will pronounce "W" as "V", but not "V" as "W".
He's SUPPOSED to mix up his W's and V's--if he didn't do that and make frequent references to how awesome Russia is and act like the dork most of us (myself included) really would be like in a situation like that...
He wouldn't be Chekov!
As Chekov and Spock are my favorites I was ECSTATIC that they were done BRILLIANTLY HERE! They kept Chekov's w/v-thing and Quinto looks just like Nimoy! Urban as Bones was AMAZING! The rest were great!
This bit doesn't make any sense. The reason a lot of Slavic people pronounce "v" and "w" the same is that the "w" sound doesn't exist in their language, only V. So in when learning English they have to work so hard to say "w" instead of "w" for that they end up saying "W" all the time, even when they should say "V". Why would he have a problem pronouncing a sound that is everywhere in Russian?
@rabbitwho If this were a normal Russian character's accent I'd agree whole heartedly, but it's Chekov. If he didn't mess up his v's and w's, he wouldn't be Chekov, he would just be some Russian guy. The bad accent is what makes Chekov Chekov.
@YeMightyDespair No no, you misunderstand, mixing up Ws and Vs is normal for Russian people, but the difficult one to pronounce is the W and not the V. I can't understand why he would have to have said wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwviktor

hes so adorable...my favorite scene of the movie is when hes running throw the halls screaming I CAN DO THAT I CAN DO THAT MOVE MOVE I CAN DO THAT I CAN DO THAT!!!!! lol
Ha! Capitalist pigdogs, refusing to install a Russian-language translator, forcing Chekov to struggle with the voice-recognition programs. It's discrimination, I tell ya!
i just finnished watching this move and i noticed that at 0:07 - 0:08 the voice that says "why are you talkiing to me man" isnt even part of the movie! it actually says something like authorization code not recongnized. that voice was just put in there. but i like it. it makes the scene more hilarious.
@whozluvinu It's part of the movie... that's Kirk talking to Pike at the bar after the fight... the uploader of this vid just put that in there because it's PERFECT. lol
@whozluvinu Actually I watched the movie again closely, and that sample is from earlier in the movie when Captain Pike breaks up the fight in the bar and Kirk asks "Why are you talking to me, man?" It's still hilarious that that quote fits there so well... =)
@whozluvinu actual that is in the movie it's just not at that part. the "why are you even talking to me man" is what kirk says to pike in the bar at the beginning of the movie. you right about it not going right there in that particular spot but that is in the movie
@Xearf He's always been my favorite character, from the "old" Chekov (feels odd to say that) to the new one... he's so much like me, it's ridiculous; my HAIR even looks like the new Chekov's all curly and a mess... pale... never knowing what's going on fully but always helpful and loyal to the friends who confuse the hell out of him.
CHEKOVS OF THE WORLD UNITE! (And for the record- SO GLAD they had this scene and kept not only the accent, but even the v's-as-w-s thing... I want Trek 12 NOW!)
I love it when he runs to go save kirk and sulu and while he's running he goes, " I can Zoo Zat! I can Zo Zat" and then when he does he goes jumps up and goes," Yama Youl!" or something like that which means " Holy Sh*t!" xD
Chekov the worst russian accent ever? The old one maybe, but the new one Anton Yelchin is a born Russian with two parents who most likely speak heavily-accented english. His accent is excellent! But, in Star Trek 4 pronouncing "v" as "w" was a Chekov joke (nuclear wessels) and they decided to reprise that joke, that's all.
@MLFive Anton speaks perfect english actually. He said he choose to keep the accent from the old one(yeah,) and that its more of a polish accent, not russian but it sounds like what americans thought of russians
@MLFive you are right, his accent is very good. the problem is it's a little bit too perfect. every russian accent is unique, though there are some consistent patterns. yelchin, however, makes pretty much every possible pronunciation "error" which is not natural for any accent.
Actually, this scene is bizarre because it is the "W" sound, not the "V" sound that Russian speakers have trouble with. While I agree the scene is cute, it displays complete ignorance of the Russian language. It's ridiculous the Chekov has such a difficult time with the "V" sound especially since he just finished telling the captain what is name is: "Ensign ChekoV, PaVel AndreoVitch, sir." A "V" sound in each of his names, but somehow he cant pronounce the "V" in "Victor." *eyeroll*
... Chekov in general (old and new) is an exaggeration and comic relief. In TOS ive heard Chekov pronouned Vs depending on where it is in the sentance so he can say it. But some things HAVE to be exagerated like "wodka", "wessel" and "wicktor". Just to be funny, cuz as we all know Chekov was meant to be the good side of Russia etc etc.
I am surprised dees clip is awailable on youtube. Da! Russians say awailable and I have no clue as to vhy even ven zeee 3rd letter of zeee russian alphabet is "v"
Hey man, everyone knows Chekov has the worst Russian accent ever to make it on air. But it would have been tragic if it had been replaced by a realistic Russian accent, eh? And I mean, it was an accent developed in America in the late 60's. Ignorance of all things Russian was an American core value.
If you did some research, you'd know that Anton Yelchin knows that the W thing isn't how real Russians talk. He did that to keep with the original Star Trek. Unlike Yelchin, Walter Koenig wasn't born in Russia.
i loved this part!!! really... LOLZ!!! imagine this happening with your own ship... lolz... you get irritated because the AI cant understand your accent...

@MLFive He did that in the original series too. Every device that came about, he would say it was "inwented" in Russia.

Lol it was pretty stupid for Starfleet to give Chekov a code with two V words in it. XD or maybe they did it on purpose as a joke. lol
"lets see him get his tounge 'round this."
This is so cute.

Excellent point. :)

I just like to think that it's some russian dialect that developed by the 23rd century.... >__>

If you did some research, you'd know that Anton Yelchin knows that the W thing isn't how real Russians talk. He did that to keep with the original Star Trek. Unlike Yelchin, Walter Koenig wasn't born in Russia.
