The original engine for this fiat in the world rally championship of the time was a 2.3 liter kicking out 275hp. But nowadays you have to order the engine and assemble it by yourself so I guess putting a s2000 engine in the hole was simpler/easier. And those 240hp are great.
the only downside is the torque, about 150 ft pounds. Not enough for a rally car.
@SilverSurfer102 The original engine was 2.0 TC fiat 16v unit, not 2,3L . The power was in around of 230HP at that time in last stages of works tune.
Honda engine has enough power and torque, it might look like a high revving engine with no torque at all but it goes very well from about 4500rpm and no need to go any lower than that as the gearing is correct. right now i need to fit sequential 6 speed gearbox that i already have and see how will it work.
@Walezy80 Yea you're right, and it must be really fun for the ears to rev this engine really high! Could you tell me what kind of exhaust system you installed in the car? It sure sounds great.
@SilverSurfer102 The exhaust is some free flow 60mm ID muffler and a 60mmID pipe all the way, nothing too fancy, made it in my workshop. I am from Poland.
A classic rally racer with modern car reliability. If you keep all the emissions stuff stock, it'll be road legal too! Try to do that with a works rally engine...
@samiurrahmanshah Straight pipe with 60mm ID and one muffler at the end that is straight through. It is a bit loud but who cares, this is a rally car and it is even safer to have it loud as the spectators hear it long before i come so no one will get in my way on a special stage.
Love the car and choice of engine. To all the haters that call it a piece of shit ricer engine: it has factory forged internals and 240hp out of 2.0L. 120hp per liter, naturally aspirated. When the S2000 was released, it made more HP per liter than any other naturally aspirated production engine in the world. Even more than the same era 911 GT3. Oh, and they hold up fine with boost too. Inlinepro turbo'd one with 127k on the stock internals and made 771hp at the wheels, so suck it.
The registration papers say that it is a fiat 131 so i assume that it is a fiat. Just the engine and gearbox is changed as well as some other mods to the suspension are done :)
Yes i did but my car is just a replica based on 131 racing. Maybe it is a ricer engine but it does the job right all day long and in 2 years of using it i had not a single failure. I also get at least the same performance as abarth 16v works engine for a fraction of a cost of original abarth engine.
czy to jest ta bestia co śmiga w kryterium Kamionki??? hm patrząc na blachy to na 99.9% to jest ten Fiat :) ale zawsze jest jakiś % niepewności dla tego pytam! Pozdro fajna maszyna
There are two types, one is "small" and has steel lid at the bottom of casing - this is not going to last too long with more than about 140HP . the other gearbox has no ribbed casing and no steel lid at the bottom(some of them have abarth gearbox lever extension) - this will last at least 250HP and probably much more than that.
thank you for the reply , i have a 1.6 from regata 100 hp , i want more , i was thinking of 2.0 dohc twin carbs , 1.6 turbo from delta , and 2.0 turbo from delta , can you give me please an opinion about this ?
Great vid Walezy - One of the better ones - Fantastic to be able to steer the car with such power - Looks to my uneduated eye that the car is at least as fast as the original works Fiat cars. Nice one.
anyone that says that the engine is crap. remember that senna drove a honda and honda does make class engines. sure the car here is a classic and should be kept as original as possible but as long as it fits what the owner wants no one should care.
This car in NOT a classic. It is just a replica of Abarth car that i made using very rusty 131 racing that would probably be changed into razor blades if i did not take care of it.
As for the engine, i have chosen Honda as i had some experience with Honda VTi 1,6 engine in my friend's rally car and i can honestly say that i have never driven any better engine in it's capacity class. S2000 was an obvious choice for me as there is no 2.0L engine in the world that gives more power than this(stock)
i think what he is done is not only good but its smart. like seriously lets face it. not everyone is ritch or owns a mechanic shop.
the cost to do a 16v 2l would be out of the question and you would do it if you were restoring but for a bit of fun id go with the s2000.
im actually doing it to mine in the future either next year or year after, its well worth it even the parts are easy to get. brand new fiat parts forget it.
Walezy80 im sorry, but if your going to have a 131 abarth, you dont put piece of shit ricer engines in them, you stick to worked fiat 2 litre motors, and before you say anything, i own a fiat 131 and race it aswell, and my engine is as reliable as anything, its obviously your mechanic skills that lack, as your not able to keep a 2 litre reliable
I never said that i have original 131 abarth, this is just a replica that is based on 131 racing and it will never become ex- works car. Maybe i have a lack of mechanical skills or maybe i have a lack of funds that i can spend on the engine parts.
I am sure that such power can be obtained from Fiat 2.0 liter engine but the price of parts exceeds my budget a lot. I made this conversion for under 3000pounds and in order to get ex-works power from 2.0 liter fiat engine i would need about 6-8 thousands or even more if i wish to use original 16 v abarth head which i cannot simply afford.
umm, if your saying its a replica, why dont you use a lancia 16V head like every other 2L abarth replica does, that conversion is under 1 or 2 thousand (australian) and you can get some serious balls out of it
I used to have 2,0 16v engine with 4x44mm slide plate throttles an it was just not enough for me. I sold the engine and bought this one. It is all about money unfortunately, this is the cheapest power you can get and besides that the engine is bulletproof if not misshifted
I was able to get 180HP from 2.0 liter 16v fiat engine, maybe not too much but this is what i made with my own hands. You can see how it goes on my other movies.
wow awesome stereotyping mr arrogance. "piece of shit ricer engine" huh? this is a great great engine, dont bash on walezy for picking out an engine that placed top 10 on ward's best engines in 00, 01, 02, and 04. 120hp/L natrually aspirated is hard to beat along with honda reliability.
Walezy80:Your 131 is a beauty-excellent engine choice-that induction roar is spine tingling!! My father used to race a Fiat 131 sport in the Italian Intermarque (UK) many years ago, he used the stock 8V unit and managed to get about 185bhp out of her so to have 240bhp+ must be awesome. Unfortunately he has passed away recently but I intend to make a 131 like this one day - was it a big job to make the S2000 unit/gearbox fit? Do you have a flikr address or anything with pictures of the build?

@samiurrahmanshah It is road legal, i have the car registered all the time so i can drive it on the streets but it is not comfortable :)
I use the engine in my car for about 3,5 year and all i did up till now was to change oil 3 times. no problems at all.
Walezy80 8 months ago
@Walezy80 Are you using a silencer on it or is it a straight exhaust pipe? Sounds awfully loud, and I imagine, not very comfortable for road use :)
