  • Its hard to appreciate this film knowing that it's style was stolen from a very talented artist in the opportunistic moment of his untimely death and that his son's lawsuits came too late to effect the production of this cartoon. RIP Vaughn Bode.

  • May I ask where I can find this version of Gaudete?

  • lol probably one of my all time favorite movies and pretty under appreciated. <3 Thank you!

  • have been ,looking for this movie for ages!! gotta love the net.. i remember watching this movie when i was little on video. god i wish i still had it!!

  • For anyone who likes this movie, i recommend Fist of the North Star (1986 anime version), Princess mononoke, Heavy Metal, Fire and Ice, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (a.k.a. Warriors of the Wind), Akira, Ferngully The Last Rainforest, The Hobbit, Ninja Scroll etc.

  • Wonderful fanmade trailer to a great animated movie.

  • Great!

  • ...Also, Bernie Wrightson did the still art for this film.Bernie rules...

  • it's "gaudete! Christus est natus"

  • Which music is this?

  • Does anybody notice how much Bakshi characters look like Vaughn Bode characters?

  • YES!Of all the articles I've read about Ralph, only one so far mentions this this!I think most people just don't know! The sorcerer is Ceech Wiard/Yellow Hat,Peace is Colbat 60, and the princess is generic "Bode broad"!I read somewhere that he said that him + Bode planned to do a film before Bode's death, but why didn't Ralph say so when this film originally came out?I'm a Ralph fan but WTF?...An' as a amateur critic, this film has major flaws...

  • Does it have have anyting to do with how we used 2 atomic bombs in japan? Or how we firebombed 60+ japanese cities and killed millions of people? Could this be a parellel to avatar using technology to save the people? If we hadn't used technology to completely and utterly destroy the japanese people, we might not have survived as a country.

  • @gukoni :Sure. Just like in the recent times. Paranoia behind all : kill that ant, it's gonna hurt me. I don't know wether to laugh or cry after you said.

  • Fritz and Max get me every time. That scene is gold.

  • A #1 stuff. perfect.

  • Uhh... Wizards is Rated PG NOT R

  • do you know what age rating it has

  • Considering Ralph Bakshi and from what Ive seen, I would say R at least.

  • thanks :)

  • @DarkArtistKaiser

Well he wanted to do a family animated movie for once and this was it.

  • That was one great tribute! I've always loved this movie, and when I bought it on DVD, I was totally elated and forced my ex to watch it after always talking to him about it. *sighs* He didn't like it. (I liked all the movies he showed me. *grump*) Oh well, no accounting for taste I suppose. Thank you for posting!

  • i am a big fan of wizards! was one of the first animated movies that got me hooked to animation - liked his lord of the rings as well - i believe Jack borrowed a lot of his LOTR costumes from bakshi

  • I was fascinated by animation when I saw this movie, too... what especially fascinated me were the very unique styels and non traditional effects that were used.

  • The first time i saw this movie was classic. Whatever they were riding as horses gets gunned down with a machine gun and i was at my best friends house and his grandmother was watching the movie with us. And she said atleast there was no blood. Then blood poured from the mount and she just walked out the room

  • this is one of the best animated movies ever

and this is a fine tribute to it, good work my friend =D

  • Thank you, so much. It's been a favorite of mine for many years :)

  • Dont mention it, oh and I must ask, What song did you use for this?

    its beautifu =)

  • the music is a combination of sony acid loops I layered together:)

  • Increadible!

once again hats off to you :)

  • Dude... You spoiled the ending there...

  • yeah, well, it's so old, I figured everyone's seen it by now :)

  • good thing i read this, haha im gunna watch it later

  • Y'all know that Bakshi stole most of the characters from comic book legend Vaughn Bode, right?

  • It is my understanding the Bakshi and Bode were good friends, actually, and had discussed working on projects together. And though the style is similiar, Bode's style was more graffitti like, as in Cheech The wWizard.

  • Bakshi, also stated when the movie was made that it was, indeed a tribute to Bode, though his art was of a different style. They remained very good friends throughout life.

  • Maybe the use of the word 'stole'was a bit harsh. Although the line work isn't as distinctive as Bode's work the likeness to his characters is undeniable. The 'bounty hunter' character is almost identical to Bode's 'Cobalt 60' and the female characters speak for themselves.

While Bakshi and Bode may have been on friendly terms, surviving family members have voiced the opinion that it was blatent plagiarism.

Thank you for your valid comments.

  • P.S. I AM a graffiti writer.

  • Bakshi and Bode may have been on good terms, but members of Bodes own family (I assume we are talking Mark Bode here) have stated that they beleive the movie to be a heavy plagerism of his work.

Furthermore to state that Bodes style was more 'graffiti' like is confusing the timelines, Bode pre-dated the modern graffiti (lettering, characters and fill-ins etc.) movement.

I think it would be more accurate to say that graffiti characters were more 'Bode-like'.

    Hope this reply remains. PEACE.

  • the reply will remain. excuse the timeline confusion, I meant it as a description people would understand. At any rate, the movie remains one of my favorites. Peace.

  • I had no idea this existed. Like Steve, I'm familiar with the hobbit but didn't know about this. I'll have to search it out in its entirety.

  • well I thought I knew films but I hadn't heard of Wizards though of course I'd heard Bakshi due to LOTR

  • I think you will like it, cat, though MrFunny might think it's rubbish LOL

  • awesome, will have to find this.... loved the lord of the rings, shame it was hampered by the studio, massivily misunderstood imo. thanks for the recommendation.

  • Glad to have introduced it to you :)

  • I absolutely love Wizards, it has that fun cartoony feel but without selling out to make it solely a kids film. Definitely one of Bakshi's greatest films.

  • To go further, I would say I wouldn't recommend it for kids at all :) I agree Bashki's finest :)

  • Haa! Thanks for posting this, Deb. Looks like a must see! :D

  • It's a fantastic movie, Liz.. a classic.

  • AWESOME!

  • thanks, Casina :) I hope you're doing well.

  • I can't believe I haven't seen this. It's right up my alley. Will have to find a copy to watch.

  • It's a great movie, you'll love it.

  • I tried to rent it at Blockbuster last night. They didn't have it. I'll try other places.

  • I watched this a long time ago once... but I might have bean loaded so don't recall much...

  • I think that might have been the case with many people who watched it when it came out :)

  • not even half way in and i was looking up where i could find it! excellent animation, thanks!

  • I hope you enjoy :) Amazon had copies last time I looked :)

  • Superb animation Minniver... with a very interesting history too : )

That music is very familiar although I have never seen the movie before. Strange !

    Billy....xx

  • The music isn't actually any part of the movie, that I know of. I moshed some sound loops over a choral of St. Philips Boy's Choir :)

  • Fan of Bakshi here for his work on Tolkien. Nice repost of his wonderful art and animation.

  • Bakshi was a major influence on my idea of animation and storytelling :) Glad you appreciate him, too :)

  • You have totally inspired me to watch this one. Thanks, Minniver!

  • Thanks, yeah, I figured if I posted it with no context people would wonder what the hell it was all about :)

  • Have heard about this movie for many years, it certainly seems fascinating. I am aware of Ralph Bakshi and his importance in animation and fantasy film history. As soon as the chance arises, will certainly seek out this film. Very, very cool video, thanks for sharing :)
