This is amazing! Ella in peak ballad voice followed by what must be one of the most unexpected yet felicitous duets ever recorded! The should have gone on the road together. What a treat - thank you!
I love Ella. She's as cute as a doll here, too. The flip or hair extender deal on her head is balanced sort of precariously when s he tosses her head back. Made me nervous for a minute. I was afraid it was gonna fall off. That would have been a pity. What a classy, elegant lady.
I was 7 years old in 1969. But I managed to never see this wonderful series, so I'm grateful to see these platinum tapes, which hold up quite well after 40 years. Kudos. Ella doing "Hey Jude" is somewhat startling, but when she switches to the timeless 'Melancholy Serenade,' my mouth simply drops. It is another stunning, essentially Ella essay. And the pairing at the end with Durante for the pleading of "Bill Bailey" is nothing short of joyous. Their dual scat-strut at the end makes me smile.
Ella beltin' out "Hey Jude", this is what YouTube was made for! Okay, she didn't belt it out, she was uncomfortable with the material, but it was still delicious, along with the lovely "Melancholy Serenade". I thought she was really in her element for "Bill Bailey" with Durante, they were great together! And ya gotta love the unPC ad for Polident. I can't imagine anyone admitting to drinking 8 cups of coffee a day today, lol.
You are right Melancholy Serenade was on Whisper Not, They did two sessions just like they did with the Clap Hands here comes charlie album.....So many songs still need to be issued. What are they waiting for?
we all do...The release of "Whisper Not" was only what was originally issued on the LP...there are still mono takes (One of which i have up on Youtube) and other songs..... Verve was doing so well, then a new person got put in charge , so let's hope.
So interesting how Ella can even 'rock out', if you will....Obviously the song and rhythm is quite different than her usual round up of standards.... I just personally hate those early 70s musical arrangements that attempt to mainstream the originals...
If it wasn't for you , who would post them??? It needs to be done. You would think you can go to the video store and just buy them. This world is so lame nowadays.
To get the chance to see some of the legends of showbusiness perform is a joy. Thank you so much, Ella singing Hey Jude set me up for the rest of the day
