"professional driver on a closed course" ... just watch the technical breakdown by MPC... this isn't a professional driver, nor is this in a real street!
Once the three distinct segments were ready, MPC re-timewarped, restabilized and recombined each plate in 2D in Flame to recreate one smooth and fluid movement. The greatest challenge was to recreate significant deformation of the focal length and fixed hudge parallax issues in 2D for each transition into a long, crazy 180-degree camera movement,”
“The art department recreated the front seats, dashboard, steering wheel – against a green screen, leaving off the roof and doors to shoot multiple plates and simulate the same stunt-driving position as the camera passed from one side to the other. We rotoscoped, reassembled and reanimated these different passes in 2D in Flame in order to maintain the camera movement.
The studio shot the :30 sequence in three parts – the approaching car, the camera passing through the interior, and the shot of the car drifting away – at 1,000 frames per second using a Phantom camera, then recombined the footage in post. “We shot this segment using a ‘motion control,’ which is a mechanical arm controlled by a computer.
I'm curious if anyone has an idea of how this commercial was made. I'm not aware of any wiring harness or dolly/crane combination that can achieve the camera passing through the moving car from passenger side to driver's side. Could it actually be very realistic, detailed animation?
@Shermanator2u If I am to guess, the best theory is that the ony practical prop is the interior of the vehicle and the driver. The camera would have made the pass, and via CGI the car's exterior and cityscapr would be integrated.
@TheGarageCentraal Thank very much for your response, and for you your theory. It sounds like the best answer I've heard so far. If that is indeed the way it was created, I think it was executed very well. I work in a video post-production facility, but I'm a composer/audio engineer, and not a video guy, so I'm going to ask our editors what they think tomorrow. Thanks again.
@jwatwater Yes he does, and the Merc is a tasteful car. But, honestly, who drifts a Mercedes Benz? Even Mad Skillz Millen would perfer not to drive a Merc that way. That's advertising I guess.
Mercedes please stop with the bullshit half leather in the UK sport models. The best or nothing only sounds right if you have full leather as standard on all models. Charge more if you have to.
@omfggoogle Mercedes has always had "MB Tex" vinyl as an option since the 80's and i think even earlier. It is actually more durable then leather, and doesn't crack in the sun and stays supple on some of the 20+ year old models.. My 1993 e class has leather that is all ripped up, yet my uncle's 1990 e class has vinyl that has still retained its shape and isn't ripped..
I Love it!!!

Why oh why won't they make a manual . Sadly it is the only reason I would buy a M3 over a C63 AMG

Oh yes! Now that`s what I call a proper car commercial. Simple yet brilliant. Mercedes. The best or nothing.

Hey, cool-- if you get this car you can watch TV while you drift carelessly through the crosswalk.
