A huge problem with colleges today is they are willing to accept "C" students for profit who mostly don't do well. What's worse is that professors cut too much slack for the students. Anyone can understand if a student gets sick or there's a family emergency. This video shows an example of some students who SHOULD NOT go to college. There's too many graduates now for the shrinking job market, ruining it for those who actually work hard and pass their courses with A's and B's.

this would be great, only we all know that professors - especially those with PhD's, spend all their time living in a bubble thinking they are more important than they are. All the professors I know - and i know many - act as above, but the truth is, professors do the least amount of work out of most professions. Seriously, no more than a few hours actual teaching a week, and they get paid for it? Professors need a reality check - and to try a job that perhaps involves effort.
@SilvesterSimon Profs aren't supposed to spend little time teaching. They spend the bulk of their time chasing research money or administering the money they already have. Unis don't want their profs at any level spending too much time with undergrads because if they do they're not getting the big research money which pays for the buildings/equipment/staff. All undergrads are good for is for the overpriced loans they generate and the money they spend. College is becoming a joke. It's r fault too
What was unfair for me the other day in class was i showed up and we took attendance but my Iclicker batteries died (i think it turned on in my bag somehow) so i told the prof. after class if she could not mark me as absent and it wasnt even 10 seconds when she said there was nothing she could do. Thats bullshit. And i probably got 5 points off my final grade just for that "absence"
Imagine that you're in the working world and your boss asks you to write a report and you come in late the next day to the meeting, and that your report, which is on your laptop, can't be accessed since your laptop battery died. And then you say to him/her: "I'm sorry but I'm late and my battery died." I'll tell you what his/her response will be: "Get out."
Always an excuse, right? "The dog at it." "The computer crashed."
The world doesn't revolve around you. Get used to it.
@calvintoronto I wasn't late to the class. Hell i didnt even know the damn thing took batteries. It hardly does anything. I didn't think it would turn on from inside my bag while walking so it was a pure accident.
Well, here's what you might do in the future (besides carry a couple of batteries), for any situation. Say to the prof after the class something like "I know you're busy at the moment, but is there a good time I might speak with you? Or should I email you?" That way, you can at least send the email saying, "I'm the person who spoke to you after class and you said to send an email. Thank you. Here's my situation. Blah blah....Can you please advise?" 100 to 1 you will get results.
As a professor, this is right on. The "me" generation has no clue. They expect everything to be handed to them AND they think we really give a shit about them. Wake up! Earn your grade by achieving.
@Cervezasi depends what kinda professor you are, I had nothing but the utmost respect for my math and sci teachers so help me if your a lib arts prof USELESS
My g/f, a liberal arts prof, has half a dozen discussions identical to this one, every semester. I'd pay money to see some of these clueless and insolent slackers, a year or two after graduation (assuming they do graduate), in a real professional work environment. Many of them won't last a week.
@beendover And no, I am not a 'slacker'. I'm finishing my environmental technician degree this year. But after that, I'm gonna get myself a low-end job, not because I want to slack off, but because I simply cannot stand being around these pathetic e-peen individuals anymore. I have woken up. The world is bigger than this crap. I'd rather be around 'real' people.
@nielss4 did you not watch this video? if you did, he was just saying how many students are like the one in this video, making excuses and not even trying, and being baffled how they could possibly get a C when they claim they are not a C student. smoke a joint and calm down
I laughed so hard I was crying. My students at community college rarely find me in my office to complain, but they do email me, saying "I missed class--did we do anything important?" I'll have to remember your answer, so I have something to say, b/c frankly it usually leaves me speechless.
uh... I started the video and then totally had to go attend my ant's funeral (not aunt, ant.) When I returned it was all over. Can you summarize it for me in under 500 characters? That's far less work for me than dragging the scroll bar back to the beginning and hitting PLAY.
Parts of this are word-for-word what some students have said to me. It is TOO real. Your video is validating my experiences as a teacher. Thank you!!!
Most recently, in an email, a student who is disgruntled about his semester grade: "But i still don't get it why i had the D. Because i think i will have like a B, Like i worked hard and did everything."
How the hell did you get inside my head?! No one is supposed to know my fantasies...I'm going to pop a frickin' vein. So perfectly true and painfully hilarious. Thanks for the laugh. And the cry.
I teach at a public university and this EXACTLY how conversations with my students would go if I could say what I wanted to say. The student's share of this dialog is verbatim what I hear all the time from students in my classes.
This is a great example of a smal number of students I get every semester. I clearly see how som of my colleagues get to be burned-out tyrants in their classrooms.
I love the phrase "News Flash: Apparently you are!" to "But I am not a C student!". They usually say "I am getting A's in all my other classes".
great video, I might even show this on the frist day of class next semester!!
@GloriaD5767 I just wish she had a whip and heels when she says this! Just kidding. Just recently a student ask if she could leave class to go work on a project for another class. I said no, and to to sit down and work on the assignment (Rousseau for a composition). She wrote a nasty note instead and carried it to our department chair! Thank heavens for those two glasses of wine every evening --and this video.
@odovicor Oh, God yes, that's Plan B if they can't bully you right there in the office to change the grade -- try to leap over your head and get you in trouble with your department. It never works -- all they have to do is show their actual work to get laughed out of the office.
It seems there is a script going around -- they all sound exactly the same.
Hey...I had a day like this today: Student: "So... when is the final paper due?" Instructor: "Did you check the assignment?" S: "No" T: "It's on the top of the assignment" S: "So, it's due the 8th?"... T: "No..it's due the 11th, like it says on the assignment" S: "Do we have class the 11th?" T: "No..that's a Saturday." S: "So class ends the 8th and that's when the paper is due?" T: "No.. the paper is due the 11th" S: "So, the paper is due the 11th but there is no class on that day?" *sigh*.
omg.... love this video! Last summer i had a student for 2 different classes, about a year apart. One of the assignments I offered was for students in the teachers preparation program, to do 5 in-class observations of k-12 schools, and to write reflection papers on each observation. This student ended up turning in the identical papers the second time around and expected the full credit. Wow, I have heard of plagerism before, but no one plagerized themselves! lol
This is unfortunately on some levels true, or at least it is happening at McDaniel College. I believe If, indeed, the education we receive is something we 'buy' then is it only fair that we the students, the purchasers, invest more time into such an expensive investment? I think so, or is 'purchasing' a college degree the same as purchasing a pair of jeans: simply because everyone has them? or in this case, it 'x' an education? I care yet largely my peers don't thus this student exists.
@djw0081 I think you have an excellent people. Many of my classmates are only going to college because everyone else is or because they want to get married. I think student loans and parent funded college educations allow kids to take for granted what college is really about. Also the media often makes college out to be one giant party where everyone gets laid every weekend. So when kids get to college they do what they've been taught by the media.
@Sammoab absolutely, another problem lies with the fact that there are colleges where the administration treat the students as 'products' too: however, the professors do not. Instead the professors are dealing with many hardships: one being the students feel they purchased college, and the college believing they have purchased a product, as if we are inventory. I feel that as you mentioned people need to perhaps better understand what College is designed for.
Well, sorry to spoil anyone's party. But the attitude of this student is why the US is falling down the tubes. I have been here in the past myself but I had to improve and learn to do what I should (at least far better than before). Well, in 30 years when all our industry is in China (where they study hard) and we are all sweeping streets and starving to death maybe then people will study and do homework. LOL
@jkeelsnc The reason this vid is funny (and sad) is I and every college prof I know could have provided the dialog. I once asked a class to do a short research paper. The first kid started reading his and I quickly realized he'd printed it off the web. I calmly explained why that wasn't good, and as I looked around the room I knew from the looks of embarrassment that they'd ALL DONE THE SAME THING. And it won't be 30 years; it's now.
@southtxguitarist Its crazy isn't it. I am not perfect but every paper that I can remember was originally my own work. I wouldn't feel right turning in something that was copied from someone else. It actually escapes my log that this is done. Its lazy for one but its easy to spot on the other. And the fact that everyone did that on a short research paper is rather sad. Like I said when these guys are sweeping streets and starving one day they will wish they hadn't. :)
I have to say the fake talking was sort of distracting and awful and made this less hilarious than it should have been. I give the content an A+, however! XD This vid could really, really, REALLY benefit from someone taking 10 minutes and a microphone to redo the audio; if you know anyone with the equipment, you would be doing yourself a favor.
Oh man, this is a sample of every office hour I have ever had! It is up there with the conversation about grades-- Student: Will I get a B? Me: How many points do you have out of the 500? Student: 30. Me: Um, no. And you should take a math class.
I love this video. Somebody must have been listening in on my office hours or reading my emails!! There isn't a university professor that wouldn't identify with this!
Dear SpacePriestess - as a Professor, I thank you. You are correct about the attire I'm familiar with. Can't some social pressure embarass the slackers to at least shut up?
Why does the kid look punk/goth? The kids I usually see acting like this wear Calvin Klein and have perfectly gelled blowout haircuts with frosted tips.
@SpacePriestess However, I agree with the sentiments in the video exactly. While I'm not a professor, I work my butt off to get As and I really resent the other students who slack off then whine and complain when our professor FAIRLY grades them and gives them the low grades they deserve - hello, if I and other students in the class managed to get As, then so could they. Beer and parties might be part of the college experience, but so is homework and studying!
I think some of you are unaware of how much power students have, and how much pressure is on professors to be 'student oriented'. Take a look at the main assessment tools and note how important student evaluation of the professor is : (
That said, I love being a professor, even if some of my students are manipulative little s**ts. In fact, this is life many of us live every day!
@professoressa99 That's right! And this video could have gone further: this student is actually quite emotionally controlled as compared to many who I see. "It's all about me," is the current student credo. They are, by the way, ALWAYS happy to throw their classmates under the bus when it comes to grades. Yeeeesh!
Oh, come on people! We all have the little voice in the back of our heads that says sarcastic comments to the ridiculous things people say. But we don't say them out loud. This video just let that little voice out. And if any professor says they're not at least a little bit annoyed when a student asks if they missed anything important when they skipped class, they're lying.
@jcshay56 The reason that you need a Masters to do the same thing you could before with a BS or BA (a massive overstatement, btw) is because a greater percentage of the population has undergraduate degrees. This has absolutely nothing to do with grade inflation, it's supply and demand.
This movie is hilarious! Thanks for sharing it. Except for those with exceptionally massive egos and deeply unpleasant personalities, most of us know that this kind of nonsense goes with the job. But we care, so we sort through students' bull shit and try to help them grow up and maybe even learn something along the way. And fantasize. . .
Grade inflation is ruining the American University system. Today a Master's degree does what yesterday an undergraduate degree could do. What's next?
I can't stand these professors that can't act like professors. The fact that professors laugh at this video oftentimes says just as much about the professors as it does the students.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I laughed once during that video not because I thought the student's behavior was comical or familiar, or because I pitied the prof for enduring this student. I laughed because that prof in the video is PATHETIC. She talks for 3:42 with s...tudents and then will complain that they're wasting her precious time? Puh-lease. If that's the case, she's just feeding her ego. And these become THE SAME PROFS THAT ALLOW GRADE INFLATION.
If this student had come into my office, I would have said:
"Look, I really want to give you a good grade. Work harder and we'll see what happens. See you in class. Goodbye." End of video.
That's it! And no, friends, it *is* that simple.
I've ruined perfect career 4.0's the DAY before graduation (twice). And I've flunked one student from a required class. Do both of those *at least once* and you'll never look back again, I promise.
Seriously, I meet all sorts of profs that get all upset and frustrated with this kind of student. If these students know that their lack of performance bothers you, they will push you until you surrender and bend over backwards for them. I know assistant profs that get bothered by college students. And associates. And full profs.
Students like this are like mosquitoes. They buzz around you but in the end, you can squash them.
Professor: Why no, young man -- I'm delighted you dropped by unannounced. I had just been sitting here twiddling my thumbs, hoping someone would show up to fill my empty hours.
This is EVERY professor's fantasy. I think that, at one time or another, I've gotten almost all of these from students - though I haven't gotten "unfair grader" yet.
HAhaha that kid seems pretty brain dead to me...

LOL
jkeelsnc 1 year ago 4
@jkeelsnc The reason this vid is funny (and sad) is I and every college prof I know could have provided the dialog. I once asked a class to do a short research paper. The first kid started reading his and I quickly realized he'd printed it off the web. I calmly explained why that wasn't good, and as I looked around the room I knew from the looks of embarrassment that they'd ALL DONE THE SAME THING. And it won't be 30 years; it's now.
southtxguitarist 1 year ago 6
@southtxguitarist Its crazy isn't it. I am not perfect but every paper that I can remember was originally my own work. I wouldn't feel right turning in something that was copied from someone else. It actually escapes my log that this is done. Its lazy for one but its easy to spot on the other. And the fact that everyone did that on a short research paper is rather sad. Like I said when these guys are sweeping streets and starving one day they will wish they hadn't. :)
jkeelsnc 1 year ago
@jkeelsnc It... escapes your log? What?
tubatalabal 1 year ago
@tubatalabal Logic j$#%A!$. use your brain. A typo yes. But at least least its not copying another person's work verbatim. :P

Few college students today know Control-C and Control-V keyboard shortcuts.

THIS IS NOT ACCURATE! The student needs to be texting while talking to the professor.

Oh man, this is a sample of every office hour I have ever had! It is up there with the conversation about grades-- Student: Will I get a B? Me: How many points do you have out of the 500? Student: 30. Me: Um, no. And you should take a math class.
cranberryjade 1 year ago 6
I love this video. Somebody must have been listening in on my office hours or reading my emails!! There isn't a university professor that wouldn't identify with this!

Dear SpacePriestess - as a Professor, I thank you. You are correct about the attire I'm familiar with. Can't some social pressure embarass the slackers to at least shut up?
willnerjonathan 1 year ago
Why does the kid look punk/goth? The kids I usually see acting like this wear Calvin Klein and have perfectly gelled blowout haircuts with frosted tips.
SpacePriestess 1 year ago 89

In fact, this is life many of us live every day!
professoressa99 1 year ago
@professoressa99 That's right! And this video could have gone further: this student is actually quite emotionally controlled as compared to many who I see. "It's all about me," is the current student credo. They are, by the way, ALWAYS happy to throw their classmates under the bus when it comes to grades. Yeeeesh!
mitchwayne1 1 year ago
I'm a professor, too and this is right on, especially the student wanting you to write the paper for them.

bonibell55 1 year ago
Oh, come on people! We all have the little voice in the back of our heads that says sarcastic comments to the ridiculous things people say. But we don't say them out loud. This video just let that little voice out. And if any professor says they're not at least a little bit annoyed when a student asks if they missed anything important when they skipped class, they're lying.
delizcase 1 year ago 8
@jcshay56 The reason that you need a Masters to do the same thing you could before with a BS or BA (a massive overstatement, btw) is because a greater percentage of the population has undergraduate degrees. This has absolutely nothing to do with grade inflation, it's supply and demand.
HonkIfYouLoveBeer 1 year ago
This movie is hilarious! Thanks for sharing it. Except for those with exceptionally massive egos and deeply unpleasant personalities, most of us know that this kind of nonsense goes with the job. But we care, so we sort through students' bull shit and try to help them grow up and maybe even learn something along the way. And fantasize. . .

Grade inflation is ruining the American University system. Today a Master's degree does what yesterday an undergraduate degree could do. What's next?
I can't stand these professors that can't act like professors. The fact that professors laugh at this video oftentimes says just as much about the professors as it does the students.
jcshay56 1 year ago

I laughed once during that video not because I thought the student's behavior was comical or familiar, or because I pitied the prof for enduring this student. I laughed because that prof in the video is PATHETIC. She talks for 3:42 with s...tudents and then will complain that they're wasting her precious time? Puh-lease. If that's the case, she's just feeding her ego. And these become THE SAME PROFS THAT ALLOW GRADE INFLATION.
jcshay56 1 year ago
If this student had come into my office, I would have said:
"Look, I really want to give you a good grade. Work harder and we'll see what happens. See you in class. Goodbye." End of video.
That's it! And no, friends, it *is* that simple.
I've ruined perfect career 4.0's the DAY before graduation (twice). And I've flunked one student from a required class. Do both of those *at least once* and you'll never look back again, I promise.
jcshay56 1 year ago
Seriously, I meet all sorts of profs that get all upset and frustrated with this kind of student. If these students know that their lack of performance bothers you, they will push you until you surrender and bend over backwards for them. I know assistant profs that get bothered by college students. And associates. And full profs.
Students like this are like mosquitoes. They buzz around you but in the end, you can squash them.
jcshay56 1 year ago
This video is RETARDED. It was 3:37 too long.
Look, people, my take on all of this is VERY SIMPLE.
Repeat after me:
*College students are a bit like terrorists. If they bother you, they have won.*
jcshay56 1 year ago
Spot on, except I would have started with:
Student: Yo, Dr. Smith. Are you busy?
Professor: Why no, young man -- I'm delighted you dropped by unannounced. I had just been sitting here twiddling my thumbs, hoping someone would show up to fill my empty hours.
