He did play well Karlovic here and can play some good tennis when he's on, but he is rarely on, if he didn't have that huge advantage of being the size of a tree and make it so much easier for him to hit ace after ace, he probably wouldn't be in the top 200, i mean he is simply terrible off the ground and hits about one topspin backhand every 1 out of 100 times, and yes he volleyed well here but generally he volley's below average and he is pretty much a serve and volleyer lol.

Karlovic makes up for his lack of good ground strokes by one of the best serves ever, and he can volley pretty damn well:P

if u have little or no confidence at a particular time (due to past bad play or whatnot), u kno u have no chance against karlovic, and this is what exactly happened to federer here. because not only does he keep aceing you to keep you pissed off, he also rushes to the net and puts the ball away then u have a very small chance to return it, even the second serves. so yeh, if low on confidence, expect a mind battle with ya own serve.

Karlovic just massively sucks at anything but serving. When it comes to serving, he might be better then Roddick.

Fed just couldn't find the passing shots at those crucial moments.

It also doesn't help that his opponents are beginning to be able to wait him out for an error.

yeah it just seems like in past matches, after karlovic hit the first volley, that federer would just pass him again and again and again. unfotunately, that was not the case here.
