Beautiful water. I'm going to the chunky river in Mississippi to look for water snakes at night. The water there is pretty clear to, with stones on the bottom. Plenty of water snakes there.
Awesome vid! I've wanted to do the same type of thing for years...I live in Southeast Missouri....I just observed my 1st mudsnake last year and have still yet to see an amphiuma....again...great vid! Where do you do most of your herping?
love your videos, i have a queston i bought a Vietnamese pond turtle at a local pet shop found out they are endangered and extinct in the wild is it legal for me to own it.
@Reebbo Here is a Video of a specimin like the ones i've seen crossing the road here in Northern Illinois. I have seen them even bigger,on the Fox Chain o'Lake in the Channels. I admit that I was over zealous with the "3 times as large" thing but the turtle you are holding really seemed small at first. btw, I love your Vids!! I don't mean to be trippin on ya. Here is that Vid .. watch?v=50oHC5cnqWc&feature=related
@smetlogik Haha that is how IL is. Most of our rivers here have been channeled and are all murky. That is why we go to MO when we want to herp in the water.
I tried to help a snapper across the highway with about 50 cars stopped behind me the snapper tried to bite my hand off. I don't recommend picking them up unless you really know what your doing.
Wait... Beautiful rivers in Missouri??? You have to tell me where to find these... Just kidding. lol. Great stuff man! I wish I herped more when I lived in MO, but ya know... Everyone has their moments.
yea i thought i saw a regular slider turtle and picket up by the sides and it was a snapper! i was holding it by the sides and it almose bit me...now i can only find snappers in the creeks where i herp...im gonna get bit someday...
That looks like where I went herping/fishing up in North Carolina. That's what I look forward to all year long is our vacation up to North Carolina because I get to go herping.
i found a common snapper, a little bigger than that at my local lake... he was basking and i looked closely and he had parasites, leeches, ticks, and worms all over him. poor dude looks like this one is healthy though
Lucky b******, here in Scotland we have feck all, didn't see my 1st Adder(Vipera berus) till last year when I went looking for some they are extremely beautiful animals and the ones I found had stunning red eyes and an amazing pattern which is hard to describe.

@Catcarp8 It is one of the Meramec's many many tributaries. Meramec has some good turtle herping if you hit the right places.

Great seeing a new vid ....how old do you think the snapping turtle was? Very cool find
BobbyHill27 1 year ago
a little bigger?, those snappers get to be about 3 times that size... EASILY
immovable1 1 year ago
@immovable1 The Illinois Natural History Survey lists them as reaching a carapace length of up to 48cm (~19in). This one was probably around 14in.
3 x 14 = 42. I Highly doubt that the common snapping turtle can reach 42in CL.
