  • agree with theultimatexperience he was going with him. was what one would call a 'jam'. its what musicians do; let alone the fact that marty and jason were band mates during the time of this vid. hell they musta been jamming bout 10 -12 hours a day. just lucky to see one clip of their jamming

  • I love you Marty but Jason raped you in this segmant. There should be no competition between guitarist with styles all their own, becuase each his own. But in this one you went against a geneus. Like I said I love you Marty but to go against Jason, Expect to be beatan. We love you Jason and Marty thanks for the insporation!!!

  • @scotty8254 He wasn't going "against" him, he was going WITH him.

    They're jamming, man.

  • I thought I was at least ok at guitar until I saw this video.. lol

  • jason isnt quite as creative as marty, but marty cant play as clean as jason. everything else is virtually identical.

  • too bad the camera isnt on Jason but 4:35 to 4:52 is God like!

  • this is what it sounds like when you put blues in a blender!

  • MARTY NO MOOOOOREEEE

    OOOOOOOH YES

    damn! <3

    5:40 - 6:00

  • @ironbrea

    -.-

  • 4:30 Marty was in his own world for a sec there and threw Jason off lol

  • A year or two ago, I was super into guitar. Mostly because I'd watch every Friedman, Becker... Gilbert video out there. Somewhere along the way, I'd lost sight and I don't play guitar nearly as much as I used to, but rewatching all of these videos... I've got to start melodically shredding on my instrument again.

  • Marty is god of bending, and Jason...is a story for himself...I love to listen them.

  • Although Jason Becker is an amazing composer and guitar player. I just freaking love the way Marty phrases here it really is tastey and if falls into place. Jason is also good but he still lacks in improvisation compared to Marty.

  • Could Jason play anything slow???!!? lol

  • @Chaz6993X if you can hear some notes, that is what Jason calls slow :P

  • you literally cant get any better than this, the control they have over the instrument is mind blowing, anything they want to play they can...awesome.

  • Becker is better technically and is a better composer than Friedman(in my opinion) but I think that Marty Friedman is a better improviser putting more soul(through large vibrato and bends) than Becker(i'm talking improv!!) and maybe should have exploited more his improv skills in his carreer...

  • @MrSynthead are yu fuckin kidding me?

80% of his solos he made solo and with megadeth were improvised..

  • marty friedman suck =S eeuu he sounds hella nasty compared to jason becker =S

  • @PiggyDuarte yeah his tone really thin and weak, but his phrasing is pretty good, as always

  • @PiggyDuarte wtf man marty is the best guitarrist on the world you are just a posser sure you listen Justin bieber that crab and you dont have to comment about marty asshole..,,,

  • Jasons Finger dexterity scares the shit out of me

  • Marty's improvisation is delicious!!

  • eh I have 15 hours a day or all day every day to play guitar, but its so hard to not get frustrated after a while its hard to pick up and you have to want it bad.

  • man, it's just so cool how Jason always put himself below marty, and came out so much higher! : ) i love 'em both to death though

  • they are just differnt players ,,,even then

  • looks like Jason is admiring the way marty improvises in this video. Marty is a god when it comes to picking the notes right in the moment.

If only Jason could still play today, they would be so awesome together again.

  • lol as much as these guys make incredible music, i didnt hear a incredibly rythym yet, but yet incredible leads. this goes to show rythym is an art of its own as is lead is

  • Jason may not be the most brilliant improvisor, but the stuff he composes is godly!

  • DAm Jasons hands make that guitar neck look small lol i love this jam just soooooo clean

  • i read in an interview with becker, that him and mary used to do this excersise when they jam.. one would play cords and the other would solo. but neither of them would no what the other was gonna play.. marty said it was a way to experiment with different phrasings and see how they all sounded

  • I read that too, I try that when I'm jamming with other people. I saw another video where Marty says to record yourself playing the oddest chords you can think of then practice soloing over them.

  • @Desimodontidae.. thats a really good idea too

  • They are soooooo amazing!!

  • Marty' s bendings worth the whole show,

  • God i want to play like them but i just dont have 15 hours a day staying my bedroom practicing

  • @hoang1428 if it where that easy to play like him a lot of people could do it .... it takes more then dedication for this ..... i dont even know how to call it .... awesomeness..... jason and marty rule!!!!

  • @karelenhenkie666 u need to practice right ...i realized u really dont need 6 hours a day to get good :D u jus need to really work on what you 're lacking in, and be all around guitarist

ive been playing for 2 years and i can solo really fast and clean ..and like i know alot of people whos been playing for 7, 9 years but they practice wrong ..and they still suck..sorry if i sounded cocky ...im really trying not to

  • @hoang1428 I know what you mean i started playing classical a year ago and can really notice the difference when i practice the proper classical way that i progress a lot faster. And btw dont think you sound cocky. I just meant that this is not just playing great , it's also the ability to play what most can't imagine . For me jason and marty know exactly what notes and timings and phrasing i want to hear. Do you have music of your own on youtube?

  • @karelenhenkie666 yea i know wat u mean man:D...no i dont :/ i dont really dig the recording my self playing..but maybe ill try..im in a band though :D wat about u?

  • @hoang1428

    Solo what fast and clean?

  • @hoang1428 then practice 4 or 5... there's no way around it..

  • @hoang1428 Thankfuly i have no life.... i dont get laid. i dont have freinds. i play guitar

  • @hoang1428 This improvisation is not so difficult : they use a lot of pentatonic minot scale and sweeping arpeggios minor/major not so much vocabulary, but good technique !

  • @NAThan9871 and some major scales and a little of harmonic minor but nothing unhuman compared with some jazz things :)

  • @NAThan9871 lol, most jazz is great but nothing exeptional like Jason's 'Altitudes' or marty's Jewel'

  • @1bol1 Altitudes is a great tune !!! I love it !! But listen to Giant Steps or Donna Lee you will understand what jazz power is ! ;)

  • @NAThan9871 um i usually don't disrespect other musicians but, Giant Steps just sounded like a random mess of scales and chromatics. however i did find Donna Lee quite catchy, i don't get Jazz though. i like more...how should i say this...pure bass solos like for example Utopia by Thomas Miller. or things by Victor Wooten.

  • @1bol1 Wow... I think you're mistaking... Maybe later in your musical progression you will understand why those tunes are unbelievable and made by geniuses ;-)

Miller and Wooten are great bassists I agree, but keep in mind that jazz and classical are, the most advanced disciplines in music. ;-)

  • @NAThan9871 lol excuse me but i think you're mistaking... i do like Jazz very much aswell as classical, (my favorite genre is Progressive Metal wich incorporates many elements from classical and Jazz). i just didn't like Giant steps while i do like most jazz stuff. :D

  • @1bol1 Think what you want, I am not an ayatollah of music :-)

  • @1bol1 And I do like Progressive metal ! :-)

  • jasons music came from his heart

    he had an amazing feeling

  • jason is awsome at improvising

  • Jason is the guy that need to do his homework. then he has killer stuff!!

    His improvisation seems so lacking,

but thats not his fault,as in comparison to friedman anyone would look like that.

Marty is a genius improvisor, his note choices and pharsing are just magical..

    Both guys are living legends..

  • It's because Marty's use of exotic scales taken from foreign music. Jason is still great.

  • Except "foreign" music uses different pitches then western does. Its a huge misconception, you will find marty plays the same scales everyone else does, and that playing accidentals does not make it a magical scale from a distant land.

  • yeh I' ve noticed the same thing.

I think when you are improvising you shouldn't sweep every arpeggio. cause when you sweep you lose on rhythm feeling. you need to do more alternate pickin in order to sound more rhythmic. or at least combine the two technique. yes, Marty is awesome on improvising.

Marty himself said that Jason lacked a bit in improvising.

  • @fabianidhesona Yeah, Jason said Marty taught him a good deal, you have to remember that Jason is pretty young here and he is 6 years younger than Marty. Although Jason seems to go between auto mode and manual mode when improvising unlike Marty who is an manual improvising master, Jason is an amazing composer.

  • if you look at Marty now, he loves jammin with other guitar players, but I also believe that inside his mind, he is waitin till a guitar player shows up that actually comes close to jason becker to have his ideal jamming session again like this video...i believe this is possible. Paul Gilbert came close.

  • oh what a duo!

  • they are so beastly!

  • TUBE AMPS FOR EVERYONE

  • HELL YES!!!!!

  • OH OH! PICK ME! :D

  • @gatler05 I'll take a 100W Fireballl

  • @gatler05 yes. but the sound of thats amps is like an actual amp of 15 watts without tube

  • @GeorgeSaag how do you know? :O

  • @gatler05 experience

  • @GeorgeSaag LOL, were you there?

  • Martys notes fall so delicately into place

  • ANDA A ESCUCHAR CUMBIA IGNORANTE

  • lol 8:36

  • hahaha

  • i dont think i am worthy of listening to this epic jam

  • at the end i think jason says its hot in here

  • these are the true God's Of Guitar.. untouchable in skill.. uncompromising in emotion.. and they just look badass

  • looking this video, you can see how much marty influenced jason.

  • omg jasons voice is so young in this video... check it out right before the vid ends at 7:43 damn man...jason is so awesome.

  • 4:46 Marty has a guitar orgasm

  • There are no wrong notes :D.....your ear just like em or not^^

  • i couldnt put it in better terms =P

  • yeah poor jason

    those two really rip

  • god jason looks so young it makes me so sad stuid guitar playes today are able to play and not jason

  • la amplitud armonica de marty friedman no tiene nombre!!!!!

  • These guys are the two main guitar gods!

  • jason ur the best!

  • We are seeing gods from the olimpus

  • you spelled Olympus wrong you weenie

  • whatever,,i meant Olympus....

  • holy fuck

  • wow jasons fingers at like 4:50 i wish i had the skills of these tow great guitarists!

  • their tone, to me, sounded so bright and clear but after a few minutes of listenin it becomes so alive and warm. lovely tho. LOVE U JASON AND MARTY

  • Technically speaking.

Jason was miles ahead of marty.

But marty was trillions of miles ahead in the improvisation department.

"Never subsititute technique for musicality wen you're improvising, sometimes you need to slow down" - marty friedman

Those aren't his exact words but i don't care enuf to find the video and get it perfect lol

  • none of them were miles ahead of each other at anything

  • Comment removed

  • 100% AGREED

  • i disagree, they both had the same tecnique, if u gave something that jason played to marty, he could play it. it has nothing to do with technique, it has to do with what they like to play, their styles and their way to express themselves with their guitars.

sorry about my poor english, im argentinian (:

  • Not bad english no need to be sorry. I kinda disagree though, I think jason could play what marty gave him, but not so sure it would work out 100% the other way

  • yup im almost sure that becker was better than friedman. But anyway they re both like two of the greatest guitar players of all time

  • i've got to say marty's phrasing is alot better though . but jason's technique is better

  • i agree with johnoooh, although i love most of beckers material he does have a slight tendency to fretbash in improvisation, which marty has less of. i do prefer perpetual burn to dragon's kiss though..

  • 5:15-6:01

no words can truly describe martys playing..

i love em both to death but marty just pushes over the limits where one cant even sound the way he does.

  • they are both great, but damn, i friggin hate martys tone in this vid

  • both good...but lets not compare. they are gods

  • Ok we can compare them to me though I would smash them both. with both of their collective godlike frankenfingers chopped off and their being completely blindfolded. then I would completely own the 2 of them. LOL

  • if only i had the power to tear the disease right out of becker than the world would be a better place

  • enjoooyyyyyy it.......

  • these are two legendary guitarists playing improv from the heart and soul. one lives in japan. the other has als and cant move anything but his eyes... so i ask all of you... whats with all the comparative rants? i always see that in boards about.. this ones the best... or whys he jamming with him hes waaay better.... you guys are either arrogant musicians or just plain children

  • Excactly

  • marty friedman now did a lot of improvations and become better guitarist....

  • i really like both guitar players,, and i think becker is really awsome but in terms of improvisation i think friedman is better.

  • study up on your music theory ;)

  • ??? just listen! (to Your ears...:)

  • marty sounds amazing, and he doesnt miss any notes, those are just different scales which sound pretty good

  • you're so theorycal, just listen with your ears.

  • theres a marty friedman shirt on ebay. its the first ive seen to be honest.

type on marty friedman and it should come out..

  • haha

    jason becker wears boots

    fucking awesome!!!

  • when was this recorded?

  • 5:30

thats not whats his names guitar from slayer?

it couldn't be , but it look like it, with the eagle inlays lol

  • Man this is awesome, woulda been sweet if they put on some distortion too and just wanked.

  • best guitar duo of all fucking time

  • amasing

  • yeah, but it's so like the girls, you never know what you will like, saying some time b4 that blondes are the only

  • wetaguy that comment is just shit, u can't say that, there are many guitars in the world, which are maybe not better but have something diffirent, it's like saying brown eyes are better than green ones

  • he did say, imho, as in, his humble opinion

  • Definitely the the two MOST OVERRATED guitarists of all time !!! LOL...No, only joking...It`s brilliant !!!

  • hahahahahahahahahahaha, wow, you must be amazing at guitar, judging by the way you string sentences together and your choice of words, or your just a complete fucking n00b who scenes it up by talking shit on a video site, go rape your dog and slam your head against a board with nails

  • no, there shit guitars you fucking homo. nothing near to the Kelly or the SZ720FM. If there Carvin guitars are so great why isn't Marty using them now?

  • because carvin guitars are not for the style he plays now, nor for megadeth, he used jackson for megadeth and he don't use them now

  • Idk if any of you have ever played carvin but if you have then you'd realize what's so great about them. The reason Marty isnt using them now is most likely because Carvin doesn't pay him enough. Carvin is strictly factory direct so that way they can sell thier guitars for as cheap as possible. Therefore they dont make as much money but they keep it affordable for us while maintaining the highest quality.

  • Carvin and Ibanez are both great, best guitar makers in the world IMHO. I play both and so does Marty.

  • you guys are alll idiots and will never be labeled a virtuoso by the age of 19 like Jason Becker u bunch of ignorant rednex!

  • Jason Becker was a virtuoso guitarist far before the age of 19. Do you even play guitar?

  • i dont know man, jason is prodigy, and if he hadnt gotten paralyzed, imagine how amazing he would be at guitar! his composing is pure genious as well, have you listened to some of his solo stuff?

  • Not you!!!

  • all you suckas will never EVER have the power and skill that Marty Friedman and Jason becker had so shut up anb go practice!

  • wat the fuck... u r tellig them to get off the computer and go practice.. but wat were u doing.. u were on the computer?!? u where doing the same thing as them...

  • Just in front of camera (nearest) is Marty Friedman. So what guitar did you say that you can't hear?

  • God, I wish this video were higher quality. Jason's guitar sounds tolerable, but I almost can't stand listening to Marty's twang. Almost.

  • those are some shit guitars, they are not worthly to be played by either of them

  • Those guys could make any guitar sound good, this is filmed in the late 80's, i say its the vid quality that makes it sound odd

  • you don even know shit about guitars Carvin are one of the most xpensive and best quality guitars up until today u fukin retard go back and get ur education on guitar brands knowledge u fag ur prolly from the south arent you

  • There are several idiotic aspects of your post.

    1. Carvin guitars are not very expensive, far from most expensive.

    2. Being from the South doesn't say much about ones education. Obviously you're from the North, and you are fucking retarded.

  • Carvin ain't expensive, but they're high quality. Besides, you make it sound like price equals quality, which it does not.

Also, being from the South has nothing to do with anyones education.

  • so true

besides jason got his sound from them

i mean part of it, the other part came from his fingers

but man hi used carvins and damn

    his songs are beast

  • can you build with your hands better guitars than those they had, you smart ass?

  • I don't think so. He isn't even near Yngwie's level, and i really don't have that much respect for yngwie anymore. Before you dumbass haters start posting your ignorant shit, why don't you actually learn something about the art that you're shitting on before you say a damn thing.

  • I don't think so. He isn't even near Yngwie's level, and i really don't have that much respect for yngwie anymore. Before you dumbass haters start posting your ignorant shit, why don't you actually learn something about the art that you're shitting on before you say a damn thing.

  • "He isn't even near Yngwie's level"

you're really retarded, you ignorant jealous.

  • wow, you commented on a year old comment. I don't know what to say. Looking back, i don't even know why i posted this angry comment. Most people here were saying that slash wasn't anywhere near these guys anyways. Must've been a bad day. But i stand by the comment. Yngwie sucks, and slash's technique is nowhere near yngwies. But he's still a good guitarist. I like some of yngwie's songs...but he's just so repetetive that he's boring as hell. Jason becker is a guitar god.

  • When you said "He isn't even near Yngwie's level" you were refering to Slash? Ow...If yes, you're totally right. I thought you were talking about Jason Becker...I'm sorry for insulting you, i agree with you: Jason becker is a guitar god.

  • it's all good. Glad we're on the same page.

  • SERIOUSLY BEYOND ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!
