Montenegro became independent because the former communist dictatorship regime of Milosevic resulted in sanctions that resulted in economic hardship. Montenegro's economy is now much much better than in Milosevic times. And the people of Montenegro are also all happy and satisfied with independence.
The old equipment has been outdated for at least 2 decades anyway.Montenegro has no enemies and thus a smaller but modernised military will be better. One Leopard 2 is much better than 100 T55s.
@xxwzaebd First of all, Montenegro has no Leopards or any other tank. And Montenegro has enemies, traditional ones from Croatia and Albania + they got new enemy and their old ally Serbia. They are surrounded by enemies, and it will be crushed.
A demilitarized independent nation is better than a demilitarized puppet. This act was a smart move to stabilize the area, considering the last 100 years in the Balkans.
And why would they do this? I dont understand why Montenegro insisted on independence. it is now smaller and less powerful and will become pawns to western powers. With Serbia they were stronger. With yugoslavia, they were strongest. Makes no sense to me. The balkan people have more incommon than not, now the old strategy of "Divide and Conquer" is working for the Western powers. Sad... -- CCCC --
Montenegro was always a western ally, first against the Turks and then in WWI against Turkey and the Central Powers. Montenegro is a maritime country and has a long history of trade and strong cultural ties with Italy across the Adriatic Sea. I think an aspiration to be a peaceful, neutral country is a good one.
It´s a great pity. Normal T-55A tanks and they cut them up... :/ :(
