why is the train engine backwards?

@dc110574 Because the train is mainly going uphill.Locomotives like this are mainly used for shunting ( moving rolling stock ( Carriages) in small yards.But as this is used going backwards the main weight of the drive wheels( the Big wheels) is better put to use because of better traction position on the rails.Also there may not be a turntable at the end of the line to turn the Loco around.So they go in reverse one way and push the whole train back the other way allowing full control of speed.

@dc110574 You more than welcome My Father was a Train Driver Instructor for Hamersley Iron in WA Australia.He used to drive Steam Locomotives to for Victoria Rail.The trains he drove were Iron Ore typically 336 cars, 44,500 tonnes of iron ore, Train were over 3 km long, using six to eight locomotives.
