This monkey has been enslaved for the amusement of its human masters. It should be set free to live its uniquely monkey-like lifestyle in the jungle/forest/wherever.
possibly this monkey was taken from worse captive condition like a circus where it was treated badly. releasing it to the wild would not be a suitable place for it to be.
Second to that comment, where's the value to mankind in making animals perform for food? Anyone with a dog can tell you animals can count, read your facial expressions, feel pain and joy, communicate, recognise that you have feelings, mourn. We are a very sickened and diseased species and our sickness goes all the way to the top of Academia. What hope for us?
Keeping animals confined for their natural lives to carry out this type of simpletons 'experiment' is needless cruelty. Observations and experiments can be made in natural habitat to precisely replicate such studies.
Thirdly, monkeys live in communities of up to 60-70 members. You are taking them, often when young, and putting them in cages. You and your ilk often croak from your moral mire that you have made a 'discovery', which is what, only--reproducable under laboratory conditions? Haha!
Then what do you prefer, taking them all? That's why they use sampling because it is much more costly and accurate. Maybe what you think as laboratory conditions is an environment full of people with white gowns, cages etc. But an effective laboratory condition is a well designed plave suitable for the subject.
I totally agree with you. Primates kept in a lab and put in cages often taken from their mothers. This video is so sad. What is the discovery here...That humans have taught this poor creature to count...wow a major discovery...how sad are these fucked up scientists.
i think you are missing the real point. It isnt about making scientific discovery, it is about torturing monkeys...by force feeding them and making them count... god life must be hard...
It's funny that our posts get thumbs'd down because we bring the ethics of such practice into question. Ethics however, permeates most aspects of everyday conduct.
Firstly on animal experimentation in general. You cannot deductively argue from an animal displaying behaviour B in environment E under given conditions C that the monkey will display behaviour B in environment E*/F/G/H etc under conditions C
The reason they experiment monkeys is for them to know the capabilities for an animal to display behaviour B under environment A ,C, D... and to find out the limitation of Behaviour B in a monkey or if they can exhibit behaviour D, E, F, G... etc. Moreover, using permutations to determine the number of combinations between the behaviour, environment and conditions can be used. Simple as that
I did not follow any rule in logic in arguements because it is not necessary and it is not applicable in the common people. What do you mean 'they'? What I said is that statistical derivatory permutations can be used in determining the probabilities of the behavior exhibitions of monkeys.
Hi JohnDeBunkTest, there's a link to the full article, just to the right of the viewer. The general gist is that the capuchin has learned to understand the relative values of 'monkey money', and uses it to buy the largest possible amount of food.
Well Michael Marshall, a few seconds video time explaining in those words "the capuchin has learned to understand the relative values of 'monkey money'," would place the video into context, and make it understandable to your audience.
Also, the point is to probably encourage YT users to visit their site, and furthermore their using YT to host their videos does not mean this audience is their sole focus, thus your need for spoon-feeding may be out of place in other contexts.
Hi Hemanreturns, the monkey is actually using the metal objects as 'currency'. Different objects have different values (expressed as amounts of food) and the monkey has learned to use them to get the largest possible amount of food. The article (link next to viewer) explains it fully.
yes i have read the article but, the video only shows one metal object he has no choice and can only excahnge that on object..i would have been impress had the women said, packet of penuts 99p, and the monkey counted 99p and exachanged it for the packet of penuts.
The video shows that the monkey has chosen between the left side(the one with one yellow cover) and the right side (the one with 2 blue ones) and he chose the left side. The video is unstable though.

Those monkeys would not be subjected to such a situation in the wild, thus that statement is primarily pointless.
