Their band was excellent. Not really punk though. One of their videos is on YT . Fear and Fascination. Also saw their cookbook on Amazon..named after this place.
I recall seeing these 2 in the late 1980's doing a veg burger demo downtown Chicago. They were still fun and bright people. Hi you guys!
Believe it or not, you wouldn't believe what the 2 owners looked like in 1984 when they made their own new wave music video! Check out Stations - Fear and Fascination on You Tube. Same 2 owners, but in full goth makeup!
I love Veganopolis! I am beyond sad that they're leaving. Even worse I am upset that they could not get the support that they needed to keep themselves safe and their place running. Veganopolis will be greatly missed!!
i have no idea why people are bashing this place, i have always gotten friendly service from the owners and 95% of the time have enjoyed the food i've gotten. i'm sad to hear they're going!
I hope they stay out of my neighborhood! We don't need that hostility and bad energy around us. I think the Bronx would be ideal, on the other side of the country where people appreciate and expect bad service.
OMG!! they r closeing!!! this sucks! i was there yesterday and the owner the guy in the video said that he was attacked by a crazy guy and is just fed up with it so he's moving. It's a sad day for vegans.:(
Decent place, good Reuben, prices are kinda high... I choose to go around the corner to Dreamer's Cafe most of the time for better, cheaper food and a friendlier owner-operator.
Veganopolis is great. Prices aren't dirt cheap but reasonable enough and the food is great. I'm veg but until I found veganopolis I found alot of vegan food (excluding vegan cookies - love 'em) to be pretty gross. This place is clean, nice, and has good eats, what more can you ask for?
No matter whether it's vegan, vegetarian, or omni, Veganopolis is one of the worst restaurants in Portland. They're cruising off of their niche, because there aren't too many certifiably vegan restaurants in downtown Portland.
My lunch there was tough, bland moussaka - evidently they don't like using spices either. There's much better places to go if you're vegan, like the India Chaat House cart at 12th and Morrison, or Vegetarian House in Chinatown.
I have to say the owners are nasty narcissistic people. They actually kicked my wife out for politely asking is the ham was vegan. The breakfast menu lists "ham" not "veggie ham". They never did say if it was real ham of faux ham. They just verbally abused her and embarassed her in front of all their customers. It is absolutely ludacris to be treated that way by another so called vegan or anyone else for that matter. We have the right to know what is in our food.
@lgn666 The owners are losers in life. Before they turned into these pretentious vegan proprietors, they were both in a failed punk band in the 80's. Now their little vegan cafe has closed. What's next for George and David? A dog walking service??
I worked there and they were very good owners and they had a huge following for 4 years of people who loved the place.
They did experience weird of resistance from Portland business owners on a regular.
I did get a ton of backstage passes to shows by the many bands on tour that used it as a sort of canteen. Weezer, The Roots , Little Richard and crew, Antony, The Kills, Racontuers, Amos Lee, and on. Bands always dining there. Loved working there for that perc
Loved the video! I'll be moving back to Portland after 3 yrs. in the San Francisco area and am thrilled that you guys will be there waiting for me. Rest assured, you'll have my business...and a WHOLE lot of suggestions! :-) First one? oyster mushroom ceveche! mmmmmmm.
I don't mean to sound rude or anything but believe me they won't want your suggestions! They feel that they are above that! Maybe you could save us from needing to go here and open your own place!
Well read some of the other comments posted and there are plenty others on other sites about how rude and unwelcoming the owners can be. George attacked me infront of all the customers for asking the price of something. The guy at the till had to apologize after she left but I've never set foot in there again. I was a regular customer for over two years!
These ppl are crazy ive had these people as tenants and they are psycho as hell! they are rude and real bi polar!
