I'm going through Linux From Scratch .org - I also wrote my OS years ago, in assembly - but I recall the hardware ports were a pain, each hardware type meant all new code - not trivial... call backs in assembly etc... say for hard drive - floppies, USB is sure to be more of the same - plus all the video cards? Console support plus... I think I'll try Linux from Scratch - it's about as close to rolling my own I'm willing to try. These shortcut -sites are kind of lame. Puppy or Woof is neat too.
@gruntlover2 Not necessarily, it's also useful for people who just want a simple distro with everything they need in it and nothing more, in a short space of time. Granted it's not exactly building your own distro, but it is customizing one for yourself. While these aren't the same thing, the latter is what most people want.
@gruntlover2 I don't see how it is. If you were to build a wall, you'd use bricks, right? Did you make the bricks you use? No. Someone else did, and you're using them to build your wall. That's all SuseStudio is, building a distro from other peoples bricks. In the essence of the word, this IS building a distro. If you find it insulting that some people just want a custom distro that has what they want in it and nothing more, then frankly, you're a bit of a loser...
@mysteryloser24 I see you're building an OS yourself. I am willing to bet that large chunks of that OS came from elsewhere, so you're now contradicting yourself.
@mysteryloser24 You have never spent hours sitting on your computer writting code 24 / 7. Programming is art form , using suse is like stealing someones work. And also I am sorry to admit it but Jerico OS is not an OS. A os can run 100% independently from windows. Also it not a Virtual OS either it is just a graphical shell
@gruntlover2 Never spent hours sitting on my computer writing code? Yes. Yes, I have. And I know exactly what JerichOS is. I do not describe it as an OS, nor as a Virtual OS. It is an IOS. If you do not know what that is(not Apple iDevice OS), it's a Graphical system of operations. It gives the user an interface between themselves and the hardware that differs from the actual OS. It is a shell of sorts, indeed, but it's much more than that.
@mysteryloser24 Well it has OS at the end of the name. So just calling it that is kind of like describing it as an OS. And i bet $1000 it was written in Visual BASIC.
@gruntlover2 I expect there used to be a point in your life when you would sit in Command Prompt typing things like "Echo I am going to hack you!" What you are doing now is ridiculing people for being in the same position you used to be in. I am willing to bet that more than half of your code was taken from other sources and edited. The Linux Kernel itself is a good example. I highly doubt you wrote your own kernel. In fact, I'm almost positive you wouldn't know how.
@mysteryloser24 I have wrote my own kernel in x86 assembly but no I have never stolen anyones source , I would never do that. And I have two OSes one written 100% in assembly and another that uses the cosmos kernel. But i have never took anybodys code or edited anyones code. And I was never talking about the command prompt all I was saying was that going to a website and checking boxes is not making an OS. By any means. If you really wanted to make a linux distro use LFS
When I'm installing it asks for me to log in, so I did with root and the default password (Linux) then it just says Have Fun.... WTF do I do after that? I will give you a thumbs up when Someone tells me
@Genocide2242 Perhaps you didn't select to install a desktop environment like KDE, GNOME, LXDE, or whatever. Even though it makes creating your own Linux distro easier, you still need to know a bit about Linux to get the packages and such that you may need to install. I suggest if you're new to Linux you should really use a proprietary distro, if you aren't new, well good luck.
@Genocide2242 wtf do you do after that? DO. LEARN, TRY, depending on the distro you tried ( ubuntu for example) versions 9.04 and newer I BELIEVE come preloaded with firefox. now that browser isn't everyone' fav but it's not bad. I prefer chromium. I'm using it right now on win 7 pro 64 bit machine and i use it on my 7 yr old hdd single core amd machine and the browsing speeds are maybe 1 to 2 seconds per page difference often. email slightly longer but hey.free is free for the o.s. cheers
@Genocide2242 Linue is a chance for you to step out of your comfort shell * and honestly i mean that only in an inspirational way not making assumptions cause i honest was too strict on myself on computers way back*. see if everything or most of everything you do on a computer if you can do the same thing using all or most of Ubuntu's programs that are preloaded or that you can install through the easy to use built in database that have been slowly improving. ..also..( continued)
@Genocide2242 (concluded) try to think of Linux operating systems as " a pool that you may have been curious about trying out but were uncertain where the shallow and deep end are but you have a choice where to construct either one. you have the choice of how to tweak the efficiency of the filters, pumps, hell even the design and styles of the bottom of pool and side liners, what type of slides or diving boards you want to use and where to put them and make them permanent or moveable. cheers
@chronofusion perfect! .. you just left out.. ms Windows would be like a dirty crowded public pool with scummy showers and dickhead lifeguards. , you have to wait in line for everything because its slow as shit, everything in the pool is constantly breaking down and having to be replaced, and every 5-6 months or so, the whole pool needs to be freshly reinstalled due to errors. Linux is like the hottub in your limo.. Ahhh feels SO good..
@LiquidChem ? i think you're over exaggerating win 7's problems. the ONLY time when i had a problem is when i incorrectly adjusted voltages and overclocking steps and had to clear cmos on my motherboard. other than that i have never had a problem out of win 7. NEVER..same with xp, xp pro 64 and win 7 pro 64. do i " drain the water from the pool, clean it and refill it with fresh water 2 times per year" YEAH..i do that regardless JUST to better guarantee a perfect experience but NOT necessary
@LiquidChem however, please realize..I SHARE your truth & enthusiasm about Linux based o.s's versus the mainstream ones. to mean Linux o.s.'s are the Libertarians of the computer world. which I EXTREMELY respect and compliment. I just can't wait to save up the cash to build another system ONLY for ubuntu 11.04 ( if/when it becomes LTS like 10.04) so i can really have a completely separate o.s.My own user error kept causing a weird dead end when putting ubuntu 10.04 ont eh same ssd as win 7
@Genocide2242 sorry one closer to final thought. Linux o.s's is like when you learn how to finally CUSTOM build YOUR OWN computer. YOU know what is in it, thus you are self powered enough to troubleshoot, SAVE TONS of cash vs having to call Dell's UNenglish speaking dabb dabba india support * like many other outsourcing prebuilt computer companys*. not to mention the time saved. yes it can be challenging depending on the problem but in the end. YOU have TOTAL choice and control. geek-on man
Have both Windows & Linux Ubuntu on hot swapable drives of their own. The last 12 months has seen me use Linux Ubuntu 99% of the time. Don't know if or when I would ever bother with Windows again. Ubuntu kills it for my uses.
Ah, your thoughts on building your own distro are probably not accurate. I believe you'd just customizing suse. Take a look at LFS if you want to build your own distro. btw, it won't be easy, and will take some time an knowledge.
Thank you. I'm going to check ity out. I recently installed ubuntu 10.10 on it's own partition and customized it, but would love to make my own distros to suit my needs or a potential customers. I'll upload a video soon hopefully.
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
There's a ratio between the amount of useful info you give, and the nerdy jokes you say. IMO your videos include a bit too much nerdy jokes. I like them, as they un-bore all this computer talk, but your doing it a bit too much.

There are many Virus's for OS X, just as there are virus's for Linux and BSD and almost everything else. OS X is getting more and more virus's because more and more people are starting to use it, that makes it a bigger target.
Because he only does something if he can get money for it. He doesn't to link to anything unless they pay him. He's a businessman. He doesn't care about the community per se, he cares about the community's and advertisers money. Haven;t you noticed that he only promotes products and services that have payed him?
lol its not hard... just depends on the distro u learn with... a lot are easy to learn (ubuntu, red hat...) but theres tons that are just like epic hard to learn..

Bleh, Mac, too simplified for my taste, my list goes.
Windows = Linux > Anything Else > Mac
Zemnexx 2 years ago
Bleh, viruses are too annoying for my taste. My list goes:
Mac OS X > Linux > BSD and anything else > Winblows
*Sorry, Windows-- my bad
ndfootballch 2 years ago
lol noob... you're just one of those morons brainwashed by steve jobs that thinks "Macs don't get viruses"...
BeatlesFan32 2 years ago
There are many Virus's for OS X, just as there are virus's for Linux and BSD and almost everything else. OS X is getting more and more virus's because more and more people are starting to use it, that makes it a bigger target.
perlpower 2 years ago
yeah but compared to windows its miniscule. There are like 24 known viruses for OS X
CMDProductionsTM 2 years ago 3

Why does he never leave links in the description.
ljscott1990 2 years ago
Because he only does something if he can get money for it. He doesn't to link to anything unless they pay him. He's a businessman. He doesn't care about the community per se, he cares about the community's and advertisers money. Haven;t you noticed that he only promotes products and services that have payed him?
Pirillo is basically an infomercial shill.

@CHVNX How do you know that they pay them?
