@skatesandoval You can train your puppy from the very first day on. Train it like 10 minutes every day. Just make sure it always ends positive and the dog will look forward for the daily training. Always reward after you got the behavier you wanted not like the "expert" in this video.
I recommend to use a clicker and to check the videos from tab289
YOU DON"T NEED TO BAIT to train a German Shepherd. AFFECTION is the BEST treat that you can give a German Shepherd! And a GERMAN Shepherd also responds BEST to hand-signals...
and I being a breeder of GSD I do not agree. EQUAL emphasis should be put on verbal and visual commands! You want a long distance control of your dog! INDEED they are amazing 95% of the time obeying first command given.
My German Shep is a very straight fellow. No need to bribe him. I press his butt and tell him to sit and he gets the message after just a few times. I also teach him to jump over reasonably high obstacles by leashing him and running along with him towards the obstacle and he jumps by instinct while I say "jump". After a few times, I'll run beside him, without a lease, and when he reaches the obstacle, he jumps when I say "jump". I never had to bribe him ever.
if anything this lady looks more confused then the dog itself, and cause of her confusion the dog losses interest in her. Look how the lady is standing look at her movement all wrong no authortive figure whats so ever.
I discovered early on that my German Shepherd cared little for treats. However, She'll do anything for her red kong. It's important to find out what motivates them.
have you ever own a german shepherd before? looks like you haven't. i used to have a male one for 4 years and nothing went wrong. you've been blinded by people who are scared of german shepherds.
if you get a male you should have a big yard so he can patrol, since that's what males naturally do. females are better for house dogs, and ive heard they're slightly more loyal and defensive of their owner. i have a female and she gets very whiny when someone even hugs me.
I grew up with lots of German Shepherd's (my Katja and Sabine are at my feet as I type this) I don't think there is any difference in loyalty, both genders are super super loyal (I think that's the most endearing thing about them). The males do tend to want to get out and as you put it "patrol".
German Shepherds generally respond more to praise than they do to treats. When they do something good, praise them....they're working dogs so thats how they know they've pleased the owner. Waving treats in front of their faces will only result in them expecting a treat.
W163AMG ur 100% right she was way to soft and had no confidence don't worry about that know nothing person who said ur wrong. U can be firm and loving at the same time. Stern then praise.
I think because if not done properly the dog isn't getting trained but rather lured into doing something for food. My friend trains K-9 shepherds and uses the ball method as a reward. He swears by it but then he may be biased.
omg this girl sucks!! my 5 month old has never been in training and she already knows how to sit .... she doesn't even need a treat but i give her one any way ...
with out showing her the treat i say sit and she does it then you give them the treat... thats how you train one to sit!!!
She is terrible at training. If she wants her dog to be perfect she needs to learn how to train a dog. That dog has already been trained. ROFL. Terrible vid.
W163AMG... why don't you look at the recent research on positive reinforcement, and you will find out YOU are wrong. Being rough with your dog and pushing around is archaic. And nothingxbutxpoison... Cesar Milan is NOT a trainer. He even says himself that he is a rehabilitator NOT a trainer.
it's not abusive to use a training collar. And the studies you speak of are from pro "treat" positive training people. I study wolves. I am a canine behaviorist who utilizes their behavior to better communicate. I DON'tuse treats becuz that's not their form of communication. You are limited in what you can do with treats, and your dog is interpreting this differently than you.
I agree that Cesar at times does questionable techniques, but so do positive treat trainers, and they know it.
you know an easier way? slide ur hand down her back and tuck her legs down once u reach her rear never push.. and praise with rubbing or petting so you dont have to rely on treats. it also makes it quicker to train them if u make them sit and down before you feed them.
That one very poor way of training a dog. That woman is TOO soft. How would she train a real serious, dominant dog ? Just looking at her body posture and movements tell me that she is not confident. It also sounds like she is asking the dog for a favor. She needs a lot more confidence and assertiveness. It's a german shepherd, a serious and intelligent dog, not a toy poodle, after all.
the dog whisperer cesar millan on discovery channel knows what hes doing..if u really want to learn how to train dogs watch his show :) he is extremly good
thats way to much work all you have to do is first show the treat then say sit the dog will do all sorts of things to try to get the treat an immediately after it sits down give the treat and as long as she is sitting give treats when she gets up stop d this continually
you shouldnt start at your body, but at the dogs nose then slowly lift you hand (with a treat) up and toward the dogs back, be patient because with practice every dog will get it
dose it work if the dogs mom is a germand shepert and the dads a border calley well it might be a nice god cuz both parenet are the nices dogs in the world sorta
halo everyone i own a 6 months old german so is there any formula about not pissing in his own resting area thank you very much ....please without threaten or hittting him thank you again
Sounds like a puppy mill case, a dog that urinates and defecates in an area that they rest in is not good, I would have your dog on a leash and when ever you catch him/her about to go, quickly take them outside. Also take him/her outside after every meal and after he/she wakes up from a nap.
oh cool. For me I use treats and basically wean the treats off. And by the way the GSD in my video passed away recently. He died from eating a tomato plant, and a lot of people don't know that they're toxic. He passed a day before he turned 9 months. I didn't even know they were toxic at first, and I found quite a few sites about them.
I know my black and gold would be way to hectic to choose to use a ball as a treat for obedience which is why i use only my praise to tell him he has done a good job... but to each there own. i dont know if its the same there but any show ring here will not allow you to use treats of any kinda which is another reason why i choose my love and affection as praise for my two shepherds
I don't do show ring. I train for Schutzhund. What do they have to do in the show ring as far as obedience goes? Because Schutzhund involves a lot of different tasks on the obedience routine. Heeling through people, tossing the dumbell, while the dog remains in the stay position and he retrieves it on command jumping over the wall....the list goes on and on. I've done a great job using food with mine, I say do whatever works best lol
Sheeve07 all dogs will work without food however it might take longer then normal to train...if one chooses to use treats its up to them but a GOOD trainer shouldnt have too and dont go posting video's when she clearly doesnt know anything about the breed (On another note nice sable in your vid Sheeve)
DarkTrag, I'm not making sense here because it sounds like I'm going against what I previously said, but also....some dogs work better for food than toys because a high drive Shepherd can be too hectic for a ball. One female I use to own is being trained now, and she is waaaay too hectic for the ball, she will not calm down in obedience for it. Her prey/ball drive is just insane so with a dog like that they are using food and shes doing well. I personally like to train with food.
"listen lady, i know how to sit. these treats are flippin' nasty, and i really need to poop. so just let me go outside, and i won't be forced to chew up your shoes!"

Depends, A female is always more loyal but a little lazy and still more energetic than most dogs.
A male has more of a chance to turn on you and something could go wrong.
