What Bauman is there that's good on youtube? I can't find much.. especially on modernity / consumerism. And I'm looking for English speaking since I'm ignorant to other language!
I've watched/listened to your vids a few times. Thanks! They've been helpful.
not too much bauman on youtube. type his name or "liquid modernity" and see what you get. and keep spreading the word about one of the foremost thinkers of our time.
this is exciting. treat it like a class. ask me any questions to clarify your presentation video. google "zygmunt bauman" to fill in the gaps. i'm looking forward to this.
I remember feeling like that when I was younger and I remember losing it and feeling lost and not knowing what I originally thought my purpose was in this world or who I wanted to be. Life shocked me so bad I literally forgot who I was, who I am. It took me a really long time to remember it again. Now I'm working on keeping it, knowing me more and making it come true.
enjoy the book. bauman can be a little dense and he doesn't specifically talk about black folk's struggle, but you can make the leap. the future is about everyone w/o money and access getting oppressed and forgotten. there are subtle ways this will begin to happen. there's a sure way to combat the process: know what is going on and counter it. learn. learn. learn.
i think that "lost" happens to us all. there should be universal innocence in youth, having things provided for you. the world has beneficent possibilities 'cause you get a bit of what you want. then adolescence comes and the great divide takes place in too many. thought carries us thru that phase. got to be able to bring that innocence thru and shape it, mold it, ready it for the unforgiving adult world. you can imagine how and why so many get lost in the process.
hidden meaning? i'm interested in seeing what you get. don't know if i hid it. may have. the subconscious is a weird thing... thanks for giving me your time and thoughts.
i'd like to get your impressions right now. feelings, maybes, sort ofs, this idea, that notion. list me 10-15 words. don't think too much. the truth is, most people wont go back and listen to the vids a 2nd or 3rd time.(thanks buy the way. you could be doing other things). it's one and done. i say a lot of things. don't know if they're all related and cohesive. don't really know. i'll await a full response. you always come thru. but right now give me your 1st impressions. 10-15 words.
there's a block of ice that cools & melts in a sink. how to get the H2O particles back together? what about the water drops already in the faucet? wouldn't some be picked up? once ice melts, no going back. in the faucet, you'll spend a lifetime dissecting what was the H2O from the original ice and the drops in the faucet. you'll have a lifetime job as an H2O analyst but what are you getting done when the truth is the ice is gone. there's no freezing or slowing down when ice is cheap to make.
what it meant to be black in the "solid" world of factory jobs, racism, denial, lynchings, black communities bonded to fighting for justice and equality for all, leaders --see the good and the bad all woven together there-- is NOT the same as what it means to be black in his "liquid" world of loosened bonds and individual wants. it will never go back to what was. we are moving towards the "gaseous". what then when the bonds are even weaker?... i'll get to that relationship in the next vid.
solid=childhood has more to do w/bonds connecting boy to world. he depends on others. done right, the system works when folk are on the same page about what to be done for the boy and for them. think of the armish or mormons. looks "solid". families bonded. think of the city with diff. communities as more "liquid", less bonds, more free will. the "gaseous" state is modern business existing everywhere, bound to no factory site, no comm., to nothing but what they can dream and sell.
"solid"has more to do with bonds, people and society. the factory worker in small town america had a job for life. he could take care of his family. there was that bond between factory, worker and community.good. but that worker was TIED to the factory for life. he knew it, the owners knew it. recall all the strikes and death to workers fighting for decent wages and benefits between 1880s-1920s? the bonds were loosening from solid to liquid... read bauman. i can't do his words justice.
Ok..let me see if I am on the right track..Whew..you are making me think on my winter break;-) So we are moving towards a more "gaseous" state now. YouTube is a community based upon people meeting through videos. You get a glimpse into other peoples' lives, a neverending dialogue with that person. Is that another example of a "gaseous" state. We can work, socialize, from the comforts of our own homes without ever engaging in human interaction other than our immediate family. Am I kind of right?
bauman never mentions "gaseous" state. we went from solid to liquid, so gas seems next. with youtube, you tube from anywhere any time. the world is yours. talk to whomever, whenever. no limits. no cables needed. tied to nothing but your ideas. like a flying balloon. GAS. in the solid world, you may have had to be on a certain computer in a particular place tied to some solid power source. technology is mobile now, more liquid.
unfortunately joe, life will never be "solid" again. "solid modernity was the past, before the computer age. like the child in adolescence, life cannot go back. life can't be a kid again. impossible. we just have to deal with the growing complexity that's presented and make the most of/from the future. the worst of what we are moving towards is a"gaseous" state where there are no bounds, no connections, no limits, no rules, no roads. just the joy and the addiction of flying.
the most positive aspect of where we are going is, there are no rules except what we can create. like thoughts on global warming, we have access to the answers. it's about doing what is right... LM is not just technology, not just hardware, speeding processes up or making "stuff" both smaller and more powerful. it's the psychology. it's changing the how and why of what we think.sometimes b/f we are aware of thought. that's what i picked up the most from Zygmuht Bauman. i need to read more.
i'll be posting more thoughts on this liquid life in the next few days. these ideas are what drive me when i seriously consider what it means to be alive now. is this liquid reality something you give serious thought to? what about friends of yours?

I started writing a book. No joke--trying to fill those pages with your thoughts. Then there's the machine you mentioned
