amazing, she doesn't play the music she feels it, it does not come withing but simply is and waits to be channeled and given a beauty we can understand. This is what it means to have passion for your art
No, but this instrument is the forerunner of the Biwa. Actually, the Japanese Biwa is a direct descendant of the T'ang Dynasty Pipa, which was played with a plectrum. The Sanxian and Okinawan Sanshin are the ancestors of the Shamisen.
I must admit that people of my middle-aged generation used to have a contempt for this kind of Chinese classical music in the past, simply because it was old-fashioned. Now that China is a superpower and an economic powerhouse, everything seems to be nice and Chinese classical music deserves a good place in the modern China. My attitude changes. Today I really enjoy the lovely pipa melody and feel proud to be Chinese. 哈哈!
@tyoungos That's great to hear, since some Europeans like me certainly enjoy the variety of different instruments, sounds and feelings the Asian culture brings to the table. It's very unique and certainly has earned its well deserved place in musical genres.
It is not attitude change. In the past during that Cultural Holocaust general public had no access to the classics, thus remain ignorant. Now you and I and everybody can readily access, learn about it and enjoy it. Chinese classical music (with contribution from other Eastern Asian cultures such Japan and Korea) is one of the four great music systems in the world along with South Asian (India etc), Middle-eastern )Jewish, Persian, Arabic etc) and Western Classics.
That's incredible I had to watch this video for my world music class and I have fallen in love with it I couldn't imagine having the talent to play this song
...coz it lets of kind of a "boing' sound..that brings it back to high..even if a lower not was intended..interesting to listen to...and also a very beautiful instrument..<3
This is amazing. played pipa for years, and when I tried to find a perfect version for this music, this video was it. Not only did the performer show her technique and clarity, but also did she show the understanding of music with some extra notes to enhance the performance. Excellent performance!
It can't be a dunhuang, those are made in Shanghai, therefore they won't have the circular bone carvings at the top, which is a mark of a beijing-made pipa. Shanghai-made pipa have a simpler black and white design/carving instead.
haha, the bad ones are made by factory workers or apprentices and the master grade instruments are made in small quantities by master craftsman. These are only obtainable if one knows teachers or through direct contact with the maker, even then the chances are that a lower quality is sold to a stranger.
From wat i can see i think its a Dunhuang. Because i have one that looks just like it, the white jade flower at the top. Its got a unique design at the back of it. Cost me about $1k.
urrg. i'm learning this song right now and it is NOT easy stuff. how can she play so well? it's amazing.

整體黎講彈得唔錯
不過佢既手型同音樂出黎既時間唔一樣
唔知係咪我部機有問題?
不過我彈左琵琶咁耐
都好難搵到咁好既人彈呢一首歌
真係perfect

all the notes are so high...even the low notes aren't exactly low...
CloverCATOREE 2 years ago
it is because the original version is composed as a pipa concerto. i.e.. to be played with full orchestra.

It would be hilarious to see someone try to play this on Guitar Hero. *****

Dunhuang makes many excellent pipa instruments from master craftsmen.
cacalacapoo 4 years ago
yes, dunhuang may seem like a bad brand from other instruments and their quality, but their pipas are concert grade instruments.
