@TomF1970 "who'd a thunk this was an Australian song??" It isn't! The song and similar songs (some close enough to be perhaps versions) could be found all over the English speaking word. Ewan MacColl recorded a version he'd picked up in Norfolk, England, in the 1950s. The Dubliners then recorded it (as they did other songs MacColl sung) and it became really popular in Ireland through their version. The song as they sing it with those words and tune is probably English though!

Best song ever in this category (Irish Drinking Songs), sung by the best musicians Ireland has produced. Been listening to this song all my life and one never tires of it. Thanks for the upload!

this is the version that started it all. Now regarded as the ultimate Irish drinking song you'll notice the Clancy's actually say it is an AUSTRALIAN song (and I'm pretty sure the Dubliners version of Black Velvet Band came from East Anglia..... )
