Naive look at trade in the real world. I love how wonderful these theoretical ideas sound but in practice they fail. Theory is what got us in the mess we're in now. Professors consulting with politicians without any real world experience in the application of theory outside of a classroom or spreadsheet.
In a perfect world, where everyone is honest and not morally bankrupt, these ideas sound great.
Being efficient is good for Fritz and Lou but it also means that the labourers they would use on the land no longer have jobs. This guy does not understand the interconnectivity of economies.
@stevo728822 Pro argument. Very similar to the "broken window" theory. Let's be more inefficient in order to give more people jobs. Let me guess, you probably also believe that: ATMs take away jobs from bank tellers so they should all be removed. Being inefficient is NEVER the answer.
maybe not, but a sense of community and where your money is actually going should be far more important. keep your money in your community and everyone benefits. it shouldn't be mandated it should be a common sense way of living your life.
@chrismboyle Yes I agree! Shopping within the community works awesome! We should go back to the times like 1845, Ireland is a great example of how well community-only based economy works!
haha, do you know that potatoes aren't indigenous to Ireland. Hmmm... in odern economics they where doing exactly what they should have been doing. "do what you do best and trade for the rest" you'll hear this in most college level and even high school level econ classes. so they grew potatoes. if they would have had some diversity in their crops and had a sustainable community things MIGHT have been different... kind of like what the USA is doing with corn right now!
and if you actually study your history you will see that Ireland had all kinds of problems, like an absentee government and puppets in place of leaders. and British where also to blame in that they took the only edible crops produced in Ireland and exported them back to Britain. oh and the home of the potato, lowly Peru doesn't get Late Blight(the infection that killed the potatoes all over Europe, not just Ireland) ever.
CRAP!!!! Do we look like we're Amish!?!?! and even they're dying out...
Why has he spent these three episodes talking about trading goods when in reality he should be talking about buying and selling good for money, for all the container ships that come over from China the only "trading" that is reciprocated returns to China via U.S. Dollars, not quite the same as a bushel of corn for a bushel of hay!!!
the value of anything, especially money is strictly arbitrary, look at how early colonists used blue beads as payment to Native Americans, the beads weren't worth anything to the colonists but where immensely valuable to the natives.
@chrismboyle Beads are worth more than our current money. If we stopped giving arbitrary value to the dollar bill and looked at it as a piece of paper, I am fairly certain I would rather have a bead. But much more certain I would like a piece of silver or gold.
@ryanburbridge Ajajajajajaja, and use it to make a memorial in honor of Uncle Sam for his "Just War", on the foundations of millions of innocent murdered civilians.
Next harvesting season, the nutrients in Fritz's land will be depleted of those that corn need to grow in that density, then he has to pump his land with artificial nitrates that are produces from oil, instead of rotating crops and allowing nutrients to replenish naturally. This is why we have to subsidize corn in the US.
@lolnickfox It would serve people better to think of things in terms of their whole economic impact, not just a widget that people can produce/sell/trade without any impact upon the environment in which it is produced/sold/traded. Keep growing only corn, Fritz, and let's see how your land fairs in a couple of years...
we subsidize corn because G.E.(monsanto) says so... every year millions of pounds of corn rots because the farmers get paid to grow it even if there is no use for it. Watch the documentary "King Corn"
Fritz and Lou make corn, wheat, socks, apps, and pPods...I'd say they're pretty well off with all of that fertile farmland, textiles, and eletronics background.
This seems to me like trade can make managing natural resources more efficient in such a way that maybe over-population is not a problem. Hmm... It also seems to be that liberals are the only people who think that over-population is a problem.
Can you do a video specifically on why international trade good? I see a lot of people who are against international trade and say "buy american" and I want to be able to send them a video that explains the issue to them.
I was going to ask at what point Fritz questions the wisdom of growing corn in place of some other crop, and Lou cuts off all trade in response. Then I remembered Fritz is Hayek, not Machlup. ;)
@goru426 Starvation is only prevalent in countries where there is no free trade. Just compare South Korea and North Korea. Which country fares better?
@goru426 "the trickle down economics" has nothing to do with this. Trickle-down is about tax cuts for employers. This is about trade barriers causing overuse of natural resources.

This sound like the trickle down economics. Makes sense on paper, but in reality, very few people benefit, and the masses lose!
Starvation and economic collapse is the end product!
goru426 10 months ago
@goru426, not true.
I think you're basing this on botched attempts to do this like what Bush did.
Cutting taxes on its own, works. But not when you're trying to micro manage the rest of the economy.
