  • buddy rich meets tony williams throw in some jack dejohnette and well.....himself ! sweet feel !

  • I love Jojo Mayer, never really appreciated how good he was until recently. That and his sticks are totally bitchin'!

  • I'd love to know the reason as to why the 1 person has disliked this, apart from being a trollolololol!

  • whts the name of the song and the name of the record?=

  • lugs look very dw/pdp-ish

  • I want to know where Jojo gets all his hoodies. Awesome.

  • La classe, c'est tout !

  • Jojo is one of the greatest drummers out there. His tech is crazy but more is his flow and passion of wat he plays. He has fun with what he plays and plays according to the part. Great job Jojo

  • Is there anything he can't play? Nice sounding kit-better than his

  • Stop it Jojo. Stop it.

  • I reckon it's a premier genista kit. Do we reckon that's an 18" bass drum? Or a 20?

  • 0:34 wow

  • Hey Jojo he is cheating on his girlfriend Sonor

  • its so good i almost want to flag it as inappropriate.

  • Is that a DW kit jojo iws playing here?

  • @GarytheIrishDrummer Doubt it, probably just a Sonor with a different finish

  • Um, no, thats a dw kit, no doubt about it. Artists don't always play their brand of gear for these types of festivals. Often its a backline kit and the drummers play on the same one. I don't think he's using sabian Cymbals there either, if he is he certainly isn't using his sig ride as the hammering is totally different then the one in the video.

  • @dudemon321 Actually you're right, it's definitely a DW. I dunno, the cymbal setup does look jojo-ish so either he was just provided the drum seizes he asked for but of the wrong brand or something, or that's just the way the kit was set up for the entire festival. Though, even on festivals, many drummers ask to only play on "their own" kits

  • world class

  • Screech goddamnit .. stop playing those fucking drums and get to class !!!!!!

  • It's swiss german. Something like "oans, zwoa, troa, voa"

  • That KICK SOUNDS MEAN!!!

  • 0:54 does he count in spanish? me parece escuchar:

    un dos tres va!

  • No he says, "1, 2, 3".

  • i'm not sure, but i think swiss beach is in switserland and in switserland they speak german french and italian (and some other)

its not german for sure, but i think its french

in french is: un deux trois quatre (1 2 3 4)

(german should be: eins zwei drei vier

and italian: uno due tre quatro,

i didn't hear him saying uno so i dont think its italian)

    ~kevin yo4

  • in italian is: uno due tre quattro

  • Nice solo.............

  • Well, didn't he play with the Kenton Orchestra or someone like that?

  • i am hoping to see Jojo playing some softer jazz. He mainly plays with the Nerve, I think. But next time when he does a Depart show, maybe he can play some standards. "A night in Tunisia" would be very exciting.

  • Actually, it's a 16" crash and an 18" and 20" ride.

  • Actually, ti's a 20" crash ride.

  • Jojo and Gavin Harrison are my favorites drummers.

    Also like Danny Carey.

    Sry i'm a spanish guy.

  • For my english i mean...

  • what sizes are those crash cymbals?

    16 and 18?

  • Yeah I would say they are 16" and 18".

  • lol

  • Its good to see a great modern drummer using the basic 4 piece jazz set of drums and a couple of cymbals.

  • buddy was held back by his time frame, he never got to learn drum and bass or funk or most other styles, even though he WOULD have been unbelievable at them, he was'nt....so it sucks to be him i guess (well not really!) jojo will always have that advantage over him

  • buddy rich seems to be the best drumer of all time, and although i really do love and respect him......his fan club will never allow anyone even come close to him, yes jojo looked up to buddy, but buddy himself must have looked up to someone, just because you learn from someone does not mean that you can never surpass them

  • dad gum where can i get a left hand like that?!?!!!

  • EruRyuzakiLawliet.. Your absolutely right, jojo is already a legend

  • His style has a way of surpassing even Buddy Rich for it's sheer perfection of arrangement combined with his incredible skill.

  • I have to disagree with your statement. Buddy would totally put JoJo in his place.

  • And I disagree with your disagree. I love Buddy to death, but I think Jojo could've taught Buddy a few things. Everyone thinks that Buddy is the God Drummer, but fail to view all these more modern drummers such as Thomas Lang, Jojo, and so on..

  • Dude if it wasn't for BUDDY RICH the modern drummers of today wouldn't exist. I'm pretty sure that JoJo Mayer himself along with Thomas Lang and all the other players would disagree with you. If they didn't then they're some cocky ass MF'ers that have no respect for Buddy Rich.

  • I sorta disagree/agree.Has anyone heard of Baby Dodds ? I'm sure Buddy was influenced by him but I'm sure nobody didn't look who came and paved the way for Mr.Rich.

  • Totally agree. People get taught first thing that the god(s) of drumming are (insert Buddy Rich/Niel Peart) and it's a bit... close minded.

  • He makes me want to push myself to the limit and be the best I can so I can unleash all of my energy without limits!

  • do it

  • technically? watch jojo's dvd and you will know witch one has the better technique.

  • You've probably never heard of Gene Lake and this is probably the first time you've listened to jazz.

  • Comment removed

  • it's not the first time that i heard of gene lake and it's definetly not the first time that i listened to jazz, but i didn't say anything about jojo's playing in this video, i agree that his playing doesn't fit in the music like other drummers playing, but technically jojo's way better because he plays so many techniques in perfection. But don't think now that i don't like lake but his technique isn't that good.

  • this short clip may not be reminiscent of Jojo's full feel as a jazz drummer but he is an amazing drummer and his artist record proves it. He is more than capable as a jazz drummer. Oh and Jojo is superior to lake technically speaking, Jojo is practically OCD when it comes to mastering techniques, I have never heard of another drummer as knowledgable as Jojo. Check out his fusion stuff with Fuze and John Medeski it is amazing, and Jojo is easily one of the best brush players around today

  • Well put, JoJo is by far the most knowledgeable drummer ever

  • Qué fraseo más rico, excelente Jojo!!!

    Para variar, espectacular

  • well... show us then

  • What?! Than I wish I owned half of his stupidity. This guy is amazing. Saying that means you know shit about music.

  • AVKJmiami do you see his left foot?.....Thats the tempo,Follow it.....

and solos don't require tempo all the time there is a thing called "LIMB INDEPENDENCE" but JoJo is keeping time in this solo.....

another thing....where are your drum videos or albums you've recorded for you to judge Mr.Mayer if you think you can do better?

  • rocker

  • he makes a four piece kit sound massive..incredible player

  • The amount of drums used has nothing to do with the sound guy. The sound guy takes care of the SOUND of the drums.

  • @Orcutti

I like Jojo Mayer, i like Nerve his band... but this band is not absolutely for him!!

it seems as music is made around his solos.... come off it!!! it's awful!!!

obviously i cannot say anything abt their technique!

  • @scenza01 every big drummer's band is created around him and his solos....does'nt mean that they are'nt an unreal band, i love depart and nerve.....prefer depart though, the stuff is great and the sax player is one of the best around

  • great drumming! love it!

  • both Virgil Donati and Jojo Mayer is a great player. but you can't say one drummer kills another because each drummers have different styles. no offence.. haha

  • indeed.

  • what? nobodies ever been to a jazzfest before?

of course it's a rental kit

  • I think thats the same Kit Jojo played on at NAMM when he did the booth demo.

  • somebody beat me to the Sonar thing. props

  • just look at his face!!

    he RULES!!

  • First time I see him not playing a Sonor drumset... is that a DW by the way?

  • looks like a vintage camco kit... could be wrong though,

  • if he switched to DW brix will be shat

  • Oh Yeah... AWESOME!!!

  • eXXXXXXXplosive!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • awsome, best drummer ever

  • Sorry Virgil is too technical....I mean Virgil is one of my favorites but who is hiring people for sessions to play a 32/16 osinato on the left foot with a 15/8 flam ratimacue groove on the top? no one. people just want something they can dance and wow them at the same time to and JoJo fits that catagory. Also if Virgil read your comment he would not agree with you he would tell you about his influences.

  • he is do damn grooving!

  • This man is an animal.
