  • Grow not old as we are left grow old.

Age shall not wither them, or the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun; and in the morning.

    We will remember them.

  • kind of cute :) 2:56

  • he's got the same accent as big chris (lock stock)

  • "Blown to bits" - I read somewhere that 10% of the men killed in the trenches were never found because they were either victims of direct artillery strikes and their bodies disintegrated or they sank into the mud and disappeared.

  • @squamish4244 :/ yea i didnt get the bit where he said "no wonder the rats survived" at first... now i understand though... very grim :S.

  • @squamish4244 sank into the mud? while.... alive? Excuse me while I wipe my memory from reading that fact.

  • @samuriguy909 Pictures of the Battle of Passchaendaele will make it instantly obvious how bad conditions could get.

  • Who the hell has put a dislike to this video? These men have seen horrors beyond anything we could imagine. Sometimes the human race makes me sick.

  • @mordig probably german lol

  • @mordig I wouldn't get "sick" over a "dislike" rating on a silly little website.

Sometimes the human race has more pressing issues to deal with. :)

  • @Camberwell86 and world war one wasn't an issue? grow up you stupid little cunt.

  • @mordig He's right and you're over reacting. Do you honestly think he was implying that the first world war wasn't a big deal? Really?

  • His voice was incredibly clear for a 111-year-old! There is a video on here of another British veteran, Harry Patch, who was 109 when he was interviewed. He is barely audible.

Because of his longevity, Allingham planned to donate his body to science. However, he was talked out of it by Dennis, mentioned in the clip.

  • Cool, If I ever get to 111 I'm going to have my eleventy first birth day such as Bilbo Baggins did in the first lord of the rings film. 11nty one years alive. I don't know why the queen did not knight them? Meybe she still could, did'nt Sir Isack newton get knighted after he was dead?

  • Show me an 111 year old who aged as well as he had.

  • @RazrHack

There have been some, actually. They've been around. And actually some who were even in better shape than this great man at the same age. But how many? The gist of your message holds true: there have hardly been any that I know of. The word "fan" is usually applied to people who do things related to arts, singing, movies, or whatever. But I'm sincerely a fan of Henry Allingham, in a very serious way. This man holds (yes, present tense) my greatest respect... and awe. Real, true awe.

  • disliked by 4 germans

  • I respect this man and what he stood for R.I.P

  • Remember that in an interview he said he wanted to live until November of 2011 just to beat the record of the oldest ever WWI veteran? It's sad that he only made it to 2009 but at least he suffered less.

    RIP

  • Glad for you brother !

  • Pretty amazing talk he was able to give . . .

  • Rest in Piece you handsome devil. What a man, what a legend.

  • these men are the true heros, every last one of them

  • He looks pretty good for someone in their twelfth decade of life. You can still recognize him from a 93 year old photograph!

People in the trenches had to be optimistic. I wonder how often they have veterans of long forgotten wars test movies (about those periods) for accuracy?

  • he has a bald spot

  • @bloozemon My grammer was quiete poor in that last comment. I'm German, My grandads all served under the Kaiser and Hitler. I have huge respect for these men. I am an officier in the British Army. But of German descent

  • My great grandfather fought in WWI. He was shot by an MG, he crawled back into his trench, went back into battle after a few days of rest. Got bits of a German shell in this legs, more rest. Gassed once and fought. What killed him, he fell and broke his hip in like 1985. Its sad to think. A man who went through so much hell, died because of a fall.

  • "Фонд предыдущего поколения". Этому примеру подойдет такое звание и его можно брать в личную библиотеку. На пенсии пригодиться.

"Fund for the previous generation." This example fits a title and it can take a personal library. Retired in handy.

  • they should have knighted every british soldier who fought in that hellish war. Ridiculous how they knight the general who sat twenty miles away saying "charge" but they don't knight the men doing the actual charging.

  • @ih8makinusernames My grangfather's Colonel was aged 24 with a VC when he became a Colonel, and then was killed in action at 25 as a Brigadier General at Cambrai leading from the front. Not all were 20 miles behind. General Bradford was a real hero, his Battalion 9th Durham Light Infantry mourned him deeply. Out of 4brothers in his family 2 won Victoria Crosses, the other two won Military Crosses (minimum). Only 1 survived the war. The youngest was killed first.

  • @RattytheSecond Grandfather I mean: sorry grandad!

  • I'm glad he died at a good age! He is a true British hero! Not David Beckham!!. This comes from a German Commisioned British Officier.

  • @MeinDeutsch1

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a "German Commissioned British Officer"? Are you a British or a German subject? Are you in the British or German Army?

    MeinDeutsch1 1 day ago

  • "No wonder the rats survived." That's one hell of an old man.

  • Bless him.

  • 113 years old... can you imagine that... what it means to reach that age..

  • Who was the WWI vetran who was 107 who could still walk like an ordinary man?

  • 113 years old.

    That is extrodinary.

    RIP sir

  • My Great Grandfather served in the U.S Navy during WW1, from what my grandpa told me both ships he served on were sunk by U Boats.

  • damn man i scared to live that long....never want to get that old.....

  • @MyBalls1nUrMouth Yoy are scared to live that long? Then how long DO you want to live?? We don't really have a choice on the length of our lives, unless you commit suicide.

  • @blaster2012 i know man im just scared u know all my frnds dead brothers and my mom dude i just hope i dont make it that long....just hope god wont make me live that long....and i would never commit suicide

  • @MyBalls1nUrMouth I agree that's just to long lol

  • "happeness is within us" he must have lost all his family and friends and to the end he alwayed was happy

  • "happiness is within us" - God bless his soul.

This man was a pride of a nation!

    greetings from Hungary

  • Hallo magyar ember.

  • Three Cheers ! Mr. Allingham, 'n bless ye as well. For in the end God will not look you over for deeds, degrees, and diplomas, but for scars.

  • Three Cheers and God Bless to Mr. H. Allingham! An extraordinary man !

  • He died 18 July 2009 this year.

  • He passed away in the summer of 2009.

  • i will mourn his death much more than michael fucking jackson what did he do for me. rip henry

  • @IniestaTorres Why he entertained us. But I agree, even the greatest of entertainers is not worthy of the same respect of the least of these veterans.

  • @IniestaTorres fuckin' --A! i agree! r.i.p henry, you have my deepest respect.

  • @IniestaTorres I have news for you. Henry Allingham is still alive and is at the grand age of 112.

  • @pammyoneto He would have been 114 now if he was still alive

  • @chincheek1 He was on television on the 11th just gone. It was said that he is 112.

  • @pammyoneto thats strange then..i watched his funeral on tv..and he was born on 6 June 1896..and theres many videos on here of it.

  • @chincheek1 Well, I could be wrong then, perhaps it was a recording of him. Bless the man x

  • @pammyoneto he died 2009 at age 113 .. bless his heart.

  • @IniestaTorres couldnt agree more!

  • @IniestaTorres Does "we are the world" ring any bells? All that money donated to the starving children in Africa. Oh wait, what did he do for you? Oh, I guess nothing, since thats all that matters. Fuck those people in Africa, what did Michael ever do for me????

  • @antisadism shut up you thick cunt, this is all for henry not michael jackson so go and listen to your michael jackson albums and touch kids you fucking twat.

  • @IniestaTorres Shut up? that comment was made 2 months ago idiot. You are the one who brought michael Jackson up in the first place you fucking idiot. I guess you completly ignore my we are the world thing because you know Im right.

You are calling a twat and a cunt huh? Yeah your DEFINATLY the type of person who would mourn a innocent man like henry. No, you dont care about Henry, you just want a reason to make Michael Jackson look bad. You dont care about him at all, so dont speak of him.

  • @antisadism haha yeah alright mate(:

  • @IniestaTorres Sorry you cant call me a thick cunt and cry like a kid, then expect me to believe you are all happy all of the sudden. It just doesnt work like that mate.

  • @IniestaTorres Sorry you cant call me a thick cunt and cry like a kid, then expect me to believe you are all happy all of the sudden. It just doesnt work like that mate.

  • @IniestaTorres Ha! You are a moron, he clearly answered your question, and since he did, you get angry at him and insult him. He just showed your true colors you piece of shit, acting like you care about this Henry and then insulting other people, Henry is rolling in his grave because of shits like you that dishonor him by using more hate. Sick bastard, you dont have to love Michael Jackson to know that what he did for Africa was a FACT, and you cant handle the truth because you are an idiot.

  • @JustinStockdale1 whatever you say big boy.

  • @IniestaTorres -SHUT UP YOU THICK CUNT!!!!!

    *5 minutes later*

-Whatever you say big boy. (Personally I would have said "cool story bro" or "whatever")

I would say that you are pathetic, but I think you already know that. Apology accepted.

  • A somewhat random question-is the guy who narrates this the same guy who narrated the planet earth series?

  • Nope

  • "Happiness is within us" Never a truer word spoken.Rest in peace Harry...

  • looks like he's in heaven now RIP

  • My grandfather was a machine gunner in WW1 at age of 18 - lost a lung to gas and saw (and maybe did) a great deal of bad things. During an attack on his line his assistant gunner panicked and turn and fled and my grandfather shot him dead for it with a pistol. I think that left a mark on him throughout his long life after the war. Regards and salute to Mr Allingham and his and my grandfather's generation.

  • Sir Henry Allingham gives me the will power to fight for are country. I'm in the British the army now his soul will life on

  • *Salutes* what a man hes the reason the worlds wars went the way they did

  • RIP sir you have honored the whole of humanity we are for ever grateful

  • this man should of been knighted all these footballers etc get knighted what for just scoring a goal these brave men were heros just like all our guys and girls in afganistan

r.i.p you will never be forgotten

  • RIP Henry. A truly wonderful man and I hope he his never forgotten.

  • I have so much respect for him! Wonderful man.

  • A great gentleman and a great hero! Mr. Alligham, may you rest in peace and joy forever in heaven! The world is a sadder place without you!

  • R.I.P Henry even though my great great grandad fought against the British fleet during ww1 he always said he wouldnt kill a brit but shoot them in the shoulder and run to the other side of no-mans-land you have had a great life sir

  • 1896-2009

  • How can sports men and women, Film and tv stars, Pop stars etc etc be bloody heroes??

When compared to this man and the 50,000,000 other souls who died in The great war, they, are and insignificant stain on the memory of true heroes.

We live in a crazy society run by the media...and all the little human sheep seem to lap it up.

About time people took a reality check.

    RIP the 50,000,000.

  • hi

what top comment similar to what i just left to right r.i.p 50,000,000

  • RIP Sir....Our world isnt worthy of such men!!

To The Memory Of Our Tommys.

  • Big-UP Henry!! Going to miss you lots now your not on the TV. Thank you for the stories dude, and thank you for recognising the fact that this was a global war not just a white mans issue in Europe and many many people of all nationalities and faiths were involved in it and died for the cause. Please remember that folks, as we also remember those doing only their duty, without question on the other side(s) just as courageous just as frightened.

  • r.i.p old guy

  • haha! He is so funny! "no wonder the rats survived"

    bless him

  • Rest In Peace Mr. Allingham

Oldest male alive at his death.

  • the amazing thing is, that he never killed a man through all his action

  • I saw the comment by mrocylite and had to sign up. It is easy to be faceless and make crass comments.

This man had no choice, he had to go to fight that is the end of it. None of these men wated to go and leave families, loved ones and their homes but the did. They felt it was duty... They all had balls and guts that I don't think many modern men would have. Read some Wilfred Owen, or All Quiet on the Western Front.

    Rest in peace Mr Patch.

  • wtf is wrong with you like seriously?

  • Real heroes. They know what fighting for freedom is all about. RIP.....from America.

  • yeah, they fought Kaiser Bill and his prussian goons

for all the germans deny it, kaiser bill was noway close to being "democratic" and a world where the central powers won, would have been one where the prussian military had the final say

  • i bet you would if any of these HEROES were stood infront of you in their prime. you would also run to mummy where as people like Harry offered their lives so people like you would have the freedom to mock them.

  • R.I.P

    a true hero

  • See today's Guardian - For most of his life, Mr Allingham refused to talk about his experiences. Eventually he did so after he was persuaded to attend a 90s reunion memorial in France, and realised how few were left who experienced the trenches. It was not something relished but, as before, he felt it was his duty and he did it.

  • R.I.P

  • RIP, Mr Allingham

  • Rest in Peace!
