I don't get it. They are complaining about too many rappers yet they added a rapper to this song? Is 3 too little? If they added another rapper, would 5 be too much? Is 4 the magic number?
Someone please fill me in to this mystery. How many rappers is too many?
@davethomas Anybody can rap... puttin rhymin words together... but it takes true lyricial skills and artistic expression to be an emcee! and thats basically the point this song is makin; "Too many rappers/ Not enough Emcees!"
rap and hiphop are the same thing. Cmon! Stop trying so hard to be cool! I understand that rap is considered mainstream. I enjoy underground more because I like rappers who say more than talk about money and cars and mansions. I like Mos Def. But Beasties are stylish mcs too. So please stop talking crap about rap and hip hop. It's all the same shit and it's all good. Yeah I said it's all good. Fuck you.
@blacktopaz8 They are the same but for other reasons. The term rap was coined to separate those that rapped positively from those wangsta rappers. The record companies caught on to this and instructed their wangsta rappers to call their music hip-hop as well as the other rappers. Confusion ensued and soon people had no idea of which was which. At this point the lines are blurred to the point where the distinction doesn't matter anymore. They're both considered the same now but weren't always.
You are a fucking moron my friend. Beastie Boys are arguably the most influential hip-hop act EVER. Go back to listening to your modern chart-topping radio bullshit.
Not to take anything away from Beasties but Nas' flow was INCREDIBLE fluid & complex and made them look just a tiny bit simplistic in comparison.....just sayin....
I don't care for Nas or Jay-z, but I can't disregard their influence with their music, They're just not the style I like. I am on the fence about the beat on this track, but the flows are entertaining. As for the rap vs hip hop argument. It's simple, Rap is what is popular and pisses parents off, hip hop is about community and artistic expression. Word.
yeah?? Your a good writer?? your a poet?? You sound ignorant...You cant compose sounds like Dreddy Kruger, Ayatollah, Madlid, Metal Finger, GZA and RZA and other great producers. You cant rhyme like Slug, VinnyPaz, Killah Priest, Cannibus, Ras Kass,Cage, Supernatural, Masta Ace, Joell Ortiz, Cormega, Planet Asia, Cunning Linguistics, Restoring poetry in music, Asheru & Blue Black, Blue & Exile, Living legends, Hieroglyphics, you want me to go on with artists you never heard of? you're ignorant.
What the fuck? What part of ANY of my comment was "ignorant"? I have heard and enjoyed ALL of those artists you listed. Why? Because all of them have lyrical skill and artistic expression! I know real hip hop and legends. Second, yea, I am a good writer and poet because I put thought and meaning into EVERY song and poem i craft. What I said was true and you look like u know good hip hop. Maybe you misunderstood my comment.
@VINCEJisSONiCtheMC Yea!!! thats what ive been sayin for years... let it be known bro!!
the term "rapper" to refer to all these Hip Hop MCs is actually mildly insulting... thats like callin a professional comedian a "Funny Man". Name: Jon Stewart, Profession: Funny Man.
ha!
(ya might not rmbr your original post... just couldnt help postin this reply! one!)
NWA was a very negative band, but Eazy-E always told you he prob wouldnt make it out alive, which was a message that crime really wasnt worth it. Ice Cube said the same thing. PE merged art and politics. Sure, rap is like dumb drugs being pushed.
Get OUT of themold. Jay-z is bullshit, Ludacris is bullshit, 50cent has a good baritone. Eminem is an innovator. The general culture though suffers from too much guns, too much macho, and too much ignorance. It is very lowbrow culture.
I disagree with Jay-Z being bullshit, I find him very creative and he's well aware he's pandering to lowbrow culture. Listen to the first paragraph of 99 problems.
The only reason rap has stayed around is that the elites want people to stay stupid, and rap keeps people stupid. The entire culture is materialistic and anti-education, except for Public Enemy and rap of the long dead past. Rap was far easier to make than funk. Lots of people wont tell thugs the truth, that they hate their music. Rap today is bullshit r&b. You gonna tell me Beyonce is a rapper?
I did listen to this song, and it sucks. The Beasties are rich posers of an obsolete music style..
what makes rap keep people stupid compared to, say pop? you're an idiot. i can tell no thought went into this weak rant because nobody has ever called beyonce rap.
some hip hop is commercial and poppy, and some of it (still) is raw and uncompromising. but you're a cretin if you think this has anything to do with elites rather than people wanting more money at the expense of a message. does there even need to be a message in rap today? there's a black president, its not the 90s any more.
The elites took the artistic positive culture (hip-hop) and made it negative, stupid, thats the only reason why shit music is negative today. because they make it that way to control their people. hip-hop is the one of the most artistic ways to express oneself. the shit you hear on the radio isn't music, its mass media used to control. but real hip-hop is in the underground.
rap is not a genre its a way of expressing the art form,hip-hop.
i think the "real critique" needs to listen to to their other albums because im pretty sure their talented instrumental musicians. the dude is just a hater.
btw, no less than James Brown was donating money to foundations to teach kids how to play real instruments.
The most sampled man in history was not a big fan of rap...but all the dummies can keep playing guitar hero and crap-rapping with their bullshit desktop samplers. All it means is real musicians will have that much less competition...and btw, samplers are fun. In the hands of a real musician, they can do wonders...
As rappers they bore except for Adrock...as musicians they are a garage band. Sure, they have respect for their capacity to generate income...they certainly dont have the respect of critics...sure, they are activists and that's great. As far as the respect of jazz musicians, puhlease....they tried backing up Elvis Costello and embarassed themselves...dont compare this to funk, that was music by people that were geniusses with instruments and vocals. Rap is a joke compared to funk.
before you were born? the 80s, 90s, and yadda yadda - you call that good rapping? that guy is a joke...ADROCK is the only person that can rap in this band, and his general musical talent is certainly limited. Watch em play instruments sometime - THEY SUCK...too much beastie boys - lowbrow music for morons. The last good song they had was Sabotage, and that was what - 1992? rap is short for crap....the beat behind the song is ok but so what...
the great thing is they have the respect of everyone in the industry and don't give a fuck about their perception by close-minded fans like yourself! I could name you about 20 songs they play their instruments on that would gain the respect of any jazz, funk, or hip hop artist alive. they have always redefined their sound, staying ahead of the game and laughing upon the corporate driven industry that is hip-hop & music in general. Complete Creative Control. If You Don't Like It Then Hey Fuck U!
The Beastie Boys brought the white folks to hip hop and exposed it to them, they try to say that Run-DMC/Aerosmith collab did it, nah it was the Beastie Boys who kicked the door down, they even brought Public Enemy to Def Jam.Much props to the Beasties they are truly hip hop greats.
grandmaster flash brought hip hop to me son, or was it rap? who gives a fuck. The whole Run DMC/Aerosmith thing was stupid. PE and NWA, and others were what made hip hop legitimate, but it is a raockform suffering from the brain damage it inflicts on stupid people and 'musicians' that cant play a note on any instrument. It is straight-up bullshit now.
It a stupid macho pose for uneducated morons globally.
i reckon they made it a worldwide thing well definetally in australia my dad hates rap but introduced me to the beastie boys when i was young. i personally think that the beasties are the only good rappers left and they're old white irish american jews that played punk music
