This Thing WORKS!!!!! I bought mine sunday afternoon from petsmart and got it home installed it in about 10 minutes then waited first day I wasnt impressed at all but I was anxious the second day I could see the difference and now its tuesday and my aquarium looks great!!
does nobody asks the question if there are still bacteria enough left to do the ammonia to nitrate transformation job ? answer : Probably an extra filter ... (?). And what about other algea that are not floating (so 99 % of the other algea are NOT treated !!!). the only solution is then an UV-lamp ! All reactons from people with practical experience are welcome.
@TheBSideDJ Hi, you are spot on, this system is NOT a filter, it's purpose is NOT to filter an aquarium, but if there is a sudden burst of free floating algae problem that got out of hand, this UV sterilizer will get rid of that part of the problem... since the UV rays doesn't shine on the glass (because these are UVC and can be harmful), this UV cannot get rid of the algae on the rock, glass etc... (where there isn't direct exposure of UVC rays), hope this helps
@yokyo8 Hi, sorry that these aren't available at Singapore. But I can check with our online shop guys to see if we can mail you a unit, do you have pay pal account?
@slamylaa Hi , sorry for the late reply . hmm i don't have pay pal account . how much is this product ? can it be use in 4 feet fish tank ? what is the votlage and watt for this product ? pls email to me asap . thanks
@yokyo8 don't bother i bought 2 of them in the UK from a online store via amazon. They are a pile of crap, they both failed with 2 weeks. The reason they are cheap is they are useless, mine went back
@alexwilson24 works really well, you will see results within days.. our agent in UK markets them as FRF-UV9W, you can go to petsmart dot com, search UV Sterilizer and check out some customer reviews, as reference.
I do admit, this product did get rid of my green water. I could actually see my fish again! Now I just have cloudy water in my aquarium, and I'm going to try to use Algone to fix that.
Just got mine last night, I have a 65 gallon saltwater tank. After 17 hours of running the water is looking alittle better. It came down to price when I bought the green killing machine. Most uv light for my tank run from $150 to $300 . For $60, I will take a chance. I might upgrade to a larger pump head. The one on my 24 volt is alittle slow. Overall a very good buy for the price. I bought at PetSmart, in Omaha, Ne. Reminder, it only kills what is free floating in the water.
I'm not sure about the nitrate part. But for the air bubble at the beginning, the pump should be pushing out air from the UV sterilizer, so after most of the air is out, air bubble stops. Like you said water is flowing, there's no problem.
i got mine today and i plugged it in and the water was comiming out of the top part and making little bubbles at the top its not doing that anymore is it supose to do that
Bulb last for 6 to 9 months, depending how often you use it, recommend to keep it on when water is green, and unplug it once water is clear, it will last a lot longer this way.
Should clear up within 2 weeks (24/7). After that, don't use it for 24/7... since there is a life span to all these lamp tubes.. just use it for 8 hrs a day or 2 to 3 days a week...
It is available at Petsmart's website, search for UV in Fish category. Yes, would recommend for saltwater as well, their site has some reviews, where users have used it in saltwater as well.
beware, if the fish swim in perfect germfree/virusfree so on, their natural defence against them goes down, makeing the fish more exposable to such (ie takes less to do more damage). then again fish wont exacly swim outside the aquarium :P in anycase you shouldnt touch the water whit your hands and or other objects then that can have germs or viruses or whatever :P
UV bulb is fully enclosed, so the UV light will kill those free floating bacteria. UV rays aren't going to your bio filter nor live rocks etc. But once your tank is cleared up, you don't need to keep the UV on all the time.
ok, well yea, m tank is clear, does this just make it clearer or does it improve health, and I really dont want it to kill all my beneficial bacteria b/c its a reef
It does not discriminate, it is suppose to kill single cell organisms. In theory they got it right, by slowing the flow rate, and adding exposure time. I am scaptical of UV units, but I will give it a try, they could be beneficial, but as for disease control, most really bad, and often present illnesses do not spend much time in the water column, but reproduce in ur sandbed, so a uv unit, will probably not do the job.
I have had my for 2 weeks and i love this thing YOU can get it from petsmart n I HAVE GOT clear water now damm i was happy cuz i was havin a party n i had to clear that shit up halla my peeps hahahahaha.
i bought a 24w but now i think the water start to got green but i dont know the ligth still working or not.. i know they said on the box that the led light but i cant tell
all the plugs are connected to a CONTROL BOX, on the box, there is a red LED, if the bulb is connected and working, the LED will be RED, if the LED doesn't light up and plugs are connected 100%, then you will need to change a spare bulb. How long have you had this product for?
i have a 200L tank and had an algal bloom, totally green couldnt see, i put a 9w one of these in and 4 and a half days later the water was crystal clear, has been ever since, definatly reccommend
the 9W version is using a PL lamp tube, so it is very compact yet powerful & efficient. Also since it is internal, smaller sizes takes up less space in the tank.
Anyone know the microwattage on these units

Theres actually very little use for a UV sterilizer in a Saltwater set up. You pretty much never get green water in a saltwater

would one this size cover a 200 gallon tank?
yournamehere954 2 years ago
1 24 volt is rated at a 100 gallons, you could place one on both sides. Two for $120 alot better than $150 to $300. It works, give it a try.

this is a great product! i had white cloudy water and in 1 day it was crystal clear( im sure that it is great for green water to) thanks!
manthatsacat 2 years ago
Not a bad piece of equipment.
Pros:
Light tells you when to replace lamp.
Water is always clear (mine is 9W in a 200l aquarium).
Cheap compared to external units..
Cons:
Sealed, so impossible to clean.
You have to replace the entire housing and lamp every time at much greater cost than bigger external UV lamps.
Unsightly.

could it kill beneficial bacteria in a reef tank.(PLEASE RESPOND)
APoirier594 2 years ago
UV bulb is fully enclosed, so the UV light will kill those free floating bacteria. UV rays aren't going to your bio filter nor live rocks etc. But once your tank is cleared up, you don't need to keep the UV on all the time.
slamylaa 2 years ago
ok, my tank is pretty clear, I just want it to improve the over-all health. So how often should I turn it on, if my tank is pretty clean
APoirier594 2 years ago
you can start with 3 to 4 hours a day, if it doesn't help, increase slowly. But surely no need to go to 24 hrs a day.
slamylaa 2 years ago
ok, well yea, m tank is clear, does this just make it clearer or does it improve health, and I really dont want it to kill all my beneficial bacteria b/c its a reef
