  • Fore all of you commenting on the Child of Time connection: Chill. OK Deep Purple borrowed the riff, but they did justice to it and made a beautiful song. Then It' a Beautiful Day borrowed a riff from DP and turned it int Don and Dewey.

  • this album came out in the late 60's. Iron maiden at least 5 years later........

  • I loved this album from the time it first came out..This song makes me see Conan the Barbarian in my mind now....crazy I know!!!

  • child in time was released a year after this song

  • This is a long shot, but does anyone else get a feel of Iron Maiden's 'The Trooper' here?

  • @BenjaminBreeg942

    could be!! love this

  • WHOOSH! The memories just spilled in BIG time! Thanks for posting this.

  • Yep... Child in Time

  • hehe Lord Stole this song from his ex-girlfriend

  • Whatever!A great tune don't youall think!!!

  • Who is Deep Purple? Okay, now I 'wait for the ricochet'...

  • deep purple said they were inspired by this song, so it's obvious ;)

  • Child in Time played by leprechauns at the irish mountains...naturally drinking Guiness below the Moog..

  • Jon Lord "used" this for Child In Time (he was dating the singer at the time), but he gave them a Purple Song which they redid (Wring That Neck, which IaBD did as Don & Dewey).

  • great song

  • You cannot ignore the fact that the beginning and the rhitm that keeps coming back sounds a lot like child in time

  • @minimitchie - yeah, it's true that some convergent / simultaneous development of ideas happens naturally, but these people did a lot of the same drugs, too.

  • This came first...

    J.C.

  • kommatara

  • DUDE! I can't believe people keep comparing this to deep purple's child in time! Child in time is very, very different. Just that little intro bit is the same. I see it as total different songs

  • @iop7535 Just feeding the fire, bud.

  • @iop7535 I think it's more than just a "little intro" that they helped themselves to. I like Deep Purple's Child in Time, but they ripped this one off.

  • @iop7535:

Dude ! Deep Purple self has confessed they used it !

    its exactly the same....

  • @iop7535 its no comparences , it is the exact riff that Deep Purple used to make Child in Time ! and that's no shame !

Black Sabbath's , tommi used a lot of Bach melodies , still no shame !

  • @iop7535 the intro is the riff wich child in time is based on ! do you understand it now?

  • because of that intro there is the comparing. Very logical i think. But child in time is way better i have to say

  • @iop7535 i always thought that the most delicious and perfect part of "Child in Time" is that intro.

  • @iop7535 go to songfacts and look up Child In Time and see why people say that :)

  • @iop7535 It's similar enough for a lawsuit!

  • Deep purple version is much better...

  • Deep purple have admiited that they were inspired by this tune and went on to make their song Child inTime

  • It is said by Ian Gillan to have been inspired by a riff featured in a song by the Psychedelic band It's a Beautiful Day, called "Bombay Calling". It's a Beautiful Day in return borrowed Purple's "Wring That Neck" and turned it into "Don And Dewey" on their second album Marrying Maiden (1970).

  • I think both this song and Child in Time sound like Journey's 1981 hit Who's Crying Now.

  • @drmjr that would be the other way around!

  • @Tenrash I actually heard Who's Crying Now before I heard Child in Time or this tune.

  • why compare this to Deep Purple? Deep Purple never had a violin player lol

  • @B360Lightning Because Ian Gillan was inspired by this song to write Child in time.

  • @B360Lightning I agree! hahaha

  • This is early progressive rock or what would become progressive rock, very nice

  • Everyone should just relax and enjoy the music!

It is great that there was a time when FM radio played a variety of all "underground" music, not just what fit the mold. This is one of 3 that was a staple in the St. Louis market.

  • @newmillenniumbeatnik Check out the tempo....between the chords changes the intro c'mon lol....its the same, not inspired ...it's useless to deny its a complete rip off but i agree ,purple did it a loooot better

  • except chord progression nothing is the same, song is good, but child in time is the masterpiece

  • gillan said it himself they borrowed from this riff so i dont see whats the big deal. thank god he did otherwise we wudnt have this amazing GEM that is child of time

  • deep purple is so much better

  • pre child in time

  • Well, apart from the riff, is not THAT similar.

  • This album is great XD

  • I knew DP were too dull to write such a good music.

  • @BLooDCoMPleX : que te sucede como puedes decir eso de dp es child in time es una obra maestra lo unico que sacaron de esta cancion fue el riff, y no hables por que nunca llegarias a hacer algo asi

  • @Axel19681972 wut

  • This isn't a cover,Deep Purple was inspired by this song,as the members of DP said. This is the original.

  • aahhh...such a beautiful auditory caress with fleeting tactual perception

  • I always hated the plagiaristic way of Deep Purple but the revenge of IaBD with Don and Dewey was amazing lol

  • the original is by street jazz player Vince Wallace (1962), David LaFlamme first performed it with Orkustra (1967) (a band with Bobby Beausoleil amongst others) and then with It's A Beautiful Day (later releases give credits to Wallace/LaFlamme)...anyway the musical theme was not stolen by Deep Purple by used with permission by LaFlamme...

  • Deep Purple Publicly admits, then, and now, (and in the original liner notes of IN ROCK) that Child in time was written upon this songs background. There are even some live 1970's DP recordings where they tell the audience to look for IABD records and performances.

  • deep purple have no problem to give the credit its a beautiful day, so there should be no problem with plagiarism. Many great and popular songs' themes are taken from somewhere else e.g. stairway to heaven, burn.

P.S. It must be there first song i see with no negative votes. Thats cool

  • @dim296 My jazz saxophone teacher always tells me "good musicians borrow, great musicians steal". If its true for jazz its just as true for rock

  • @dim296 Stairway wasn't much it was 4 notes picked similary

  • I am so glad someone uploaded this; this song has been going through my head for over 30 years. I have the album and no way to play it; thank you so very much. Love you :)

  • My loving for Deep Purple decreased by 50 % !

  • @VoooooooDooooooo Mine hasn't

  • Sweet child in time... :-)

  • Sure, this song may be nice, but "Speed King" was truly It's a Beautiful Day's best song.

Especially that violin shredding at the beginning.

  • this is a jazz master piece brought over to the house by a great trumpet player (junkie) sweet, he said I just got a call from Bombay and said I could FEEL IT through the phone...he wanted to play it for someone with ears. The Orkustra (pre-cureser to It's a Beautiful Day) broke out their instruments and jammed it with him...cool when the band lives in one house...

  • @brianpage100 you call your self a man who likes music?

  • @czar902 Yes, I also call myself a man who is accepting of other people's opinions.

  • sweeeeeeeeeeet my god what a song what a group and what a time. peace baby

and love is still the answer.

  • lol the autor posted 666 videos

  • Actually Vince Wallace claims to be the author of the theme, He says he wrote it back in 1962. He also accuses Its a Beautiful Day of plagiarism.

  • Of course it's always a delicate matter with the whole stealing/lifting thing, and there are lots of other Purple (and, for that matter, Rainbow) songs which owe a good deal to earlier songs from such different artists as Hendrix, Zeppelin, Eddie Cochran, Little Richard ...

But then there's no musician, especially from that era which was easily the most creative in the history of the 20th century, who didn't borrow or was at least heavily influenced by others. That's how music actually evolves.

  • Yeah, it's pretty obvious where the inspiration for what is arguable Purple's greatest song came from. If I remember correctly John Lord said once regarding the origins of 'Child in Time' that his girlfriend back then was close to at least one member of It's a Beautiful Day. So that's the connection between these two bands.

I personally count myself lucky to know both songs which despite the unmistakable similarities of melody, composition and even riff advance in totally different directions

  • @Tokeiihto13 Ha ha, yeah yet another branch added to the Purple Rock Family Tree. It was funny how they stole the riff for Black Night after a few lager shandies. (RG) - That's a good riff your playing Ritchie, let's use that.

(RB) - Nah we can't use that, that's Ricky Nelson's Summertime. (RG) - Well i've never heard of it.......................FUCK IT LET'S DO IT!!!!

  • @DCHurlford1 If it's any consolation, EVERYBODY back then had a fair share of lifting and borrowing from their predecessors or even contemporaries going on. And although today's musicians are arguable more subtle in their approach, they by no means have abandoned that "tradition".

Properly crediting one's influences has always been an issue (but never of particular importance before the big money was made) but apart from that this "process" actually played an important role in music's evolution.

  • @Tokeiihto13 Good points you make there. Had never really thought of it like that before. Cheers.

    (David.)

  • Many years ago, I hate to admit how many, I played this for a friend pointing out its age and similarity to Child In Time. He looked at the Deep Purple album and was amazed not see credit given to David. I have always assumed they must be friends, and DP got permission. You can argue about the semantics, but by definition this is vagrant plagiarism. It only take like 8 bars to qualify. Which do I like better? What difference does it make?

  • I was just at the "Child In Time' video explaining how these songs are the same. I was always wondering if there was a common (classical) source. But I think not. Loved these guys. Saw them about 6 times.

  • deep purple stole this

  • Deep Purple were like a hard-rock jazz band. They took bits and phrases from other people, then made them their own through improvisation. They were a little more explicit with their borrowing, but most music (and art, for that matter) resembles something that went before it.

Bob Dylan's borrowed melodies since he started making music and most people accept that he 're-imagines' older material, rather than accuse him of plagiarism.

  • Deep Purple took the chord structure to this one and made it into their very own "Child In Time" just like Jimmy Page rearranged the intro to "Taurus" by Spirit and turned it into "Stairway To Heaven." There ya go!

  • just the original tune...

  • just the origenal tune...

  • but child in time despite the riff is totally different and much better...anyway I love this band...the first two albums are great...better than jefferson airplane in my opinion...

  • Opinion city in here.

  • @slaxor aint that all of youtube!! :--0

  • Though Child In Time is 100 times better...

  • @cdorresteijn

well is better for you (and many others ) man but not for me .

    personaly I Bombay Calling more

  • These days they would have had Deep Purple in court for plagiarism, but IaBD just copied a DP track on their next album. Gentler times!

  • @boo66

YEA. :) Back then people Shared. lol Good point.

  • @boo66 which song did they copied??? i would like to check it out

  • @xurxo12 "Wring That Neck", a great (I think) instrumental from the album "The Book Of Taliesyn" from 1968.

  • @boo66 David LaFlamme would deny that. He has said that he didn't listen to Deep Purple's music, and had no idea until years later that they had recorded a song that was "inspired" by "Bombay Calling."

  • @boo66

That is actually incorrect because It`s a Beautiful Day did not write Bombay Calling, it was written by Vince Wallace in 1962 .... and Purple was inspired to write Child in Time after hearing Bombay Calling played by It`s a Beautiful Day but was not written by them ....

  • @Alirkson Jon Lord is on record as saying they lifted the riff from this

  • Deep Purple were inspired by this song. Wikipedia talking. Stop saying stuff if you dont know.

  • @h0m3al0ne its not about inspiration tard.

Deep purple has already pay in the court many many years after the copy...

  • @h0m3al0ne That's right, and it's from an interview with Ian Gillan. Jon Lord played the song, and they wanted to use the "riff" in one of their songs:)

  • A keystone of that time, I was there , I remember . Thanks so much for every note you hit.

  • Man Deep Pur...I mean, It's A Beautiful Day wrote a great song!

  • child in time xDDD

  • @jcast18k - Yeah! This is where they got the riff from though.

  • @syr1811 its awesome, in this song the riff sounds like something happy or good but in child in time its like sad :P

  • This is a song of their first album "It's A Beautiful Day" released in 1968!! Do you see what I mean? Okay, I prefer Child In Time too, but this is Child In Time's mother!!

  • @dafrenchcommunist ...it's not the mother, they stole it, shamelessly. at least it's first part.

  • @dafrenchcommunist

    Oui, c'est vrai. Et , rassure-moi: penses-tu vraiment que Marchais a tripé là-dessus?

  • my favourite song by IABD. Val Fuentes, the original drummer still with them, is a great, great percussionist well, the entire band is amazing, David on his Viola, telling his stories from when he was starting in the biz as Dan Hicks' violinist. their newest Guitarist, Rob Espinosa wailing away on guitar. I can't wait to see them again, thank you to my mother for introducing me to their music and taking me to concerts. proud to say i'm now friends with Val and Rob, such cool people! (i'm 22)

  • child in time ;)

  • @LokiJRaatikainen yeah, a rip-off!!!

  • Would that there more in the vein of IABD. You guys were and are one unique, gifted group and masters of your craft, all of you. Thanx for the contribution to our musical and cultural lives. Powerful impact with carefully refined tools.
