MAX7219 does not worth it. It's expensive and a chip can drive only 64 leds.Using more chips makes it more expensive.A microcontroller can very easy drive more then 3 led panels using Johnson Counters and transistors and they are very cheap ! :D

get as deep as you can into it. immerse yourself in electronics, programming and microcontrollers in general and in a few weeks you'll have a whole new understanding of the principles and methods involved in doing something like this.

hey nice work. i am not familiar with the MAX7219. how many LED's can it drive individually?

64 individual LED's in this case. You can cascade the MAX7219 and the LED panels for more.
