It was the watersons that got me back into folk music and songs after a break of near 20 years . we sung Hal and tow in a mummers play we did in open door theater co. we were doing "The Fool" by Edward Bond.
Listening to this wonderful song and performance put me onto Sacred Harp and "shape-note" singing from the American church. Fantastic stuff, and one of the great things about youtube is that it lcan ink you to other performers/styles
I hadn''t heard of the Watersons before, and discovered this while looking for something else here. Outstanding! I'll be getting acquainted with a lot more of their work. Thanks for posting.
I love Martin on this one .. Just amazing intervals in here . Always an inspiration .. !! Thanks for a lifetime of making my pottery shop full of great sound . . Guy
No, it sounds an awful lot like Martin Carthy is in there, not John Harrison. Shows off Mike's voice well, though. I like the group better post-Carthy - he gave a better "bottom" to the group, anchoring the women's voices nicely.

Absolute magic. The greatest English folk group ever.
I became a fan in the 1960's and now YouTube has rekindled my interest. A thousand thanks you's to all the contributors. Brilliant.

For many years I thought this was a gospel song, and sang it as such. Only recently found out that it was presumed to be an English Civil war song

Err, "The Good Old Way", surely? And not sung by the line-up in the picture. Apart from that, perfect!

It's definitely with Carthy. It's from the 1975 album "For Pence And Spicy Ale"
