As Mambochief stated, Salsa doesn't come from Cuba or Dominican Republic... or even latin America for that matter. It comes from New York! So the original way of dancing salsa is NOT the cuban way, with back steps.
And those "school shines"... every dancer can invent his, but he uses some basic steps to build around. So... NO, everybody DOESN't know those shines...
I learned to dance salsa, LIKE YOU did... only difference is you saw your parents/friends dance and learn from them... I took classes... And, as an haitian, I also learn to dance konpa (our national dance style) the same way you learned salsa dancing... some people are not feeling the music when they are dancing and just counting steps, but, like I said, who are you to know if someone isn't feeling the music or not.
