My dad used to make these for us when we were little; he learned it from his mother (born in 1888) so there's no telling how old this toy is. I always try to carry a clean spare hanky in my pocket/purse/backpack in case someone needs a little entertainment. It's "instant toy" for a bored child in a restricted environment (church, car, doctor's waiting room, etc.) and amuses adults as well.
