I do believe that the "Dark side" spends a lot of R&D into printers, scanners, and other areas where as Nikon only has one field of interest - Image creation with great optics - From the Surfs of Hawaii to outta space they are every where not just some "white" lens on the side of a football or Rugby pitch where image excellence is not primary!

Perhaps that's why dslr videomakers are looking towards EOS 7D or 5D MkII or Panasonic GH1 instead of the D300s. They are not thinking about the megapixels anymore and looking only at the video capabilities of a particular video enabled dslr. But yeah, tools is not equal to talent and creativity. If you are creative, you can make any tool shine. But nothing is bad with having extra options too. A bit of wiggle-room with the features and options might be helpful when one tries to get creative.
There is no question D300s will be a very good tool for the digital Photographer. Performance is superb and very very versatile in almost all aspects in usability. But if on the DSLR video side of things, nikon has chosen to give 720p only for the video and not much variable frame rate - a lot less options on that field compared to other video-enabled dslr cameras. More and more people now are into dslr video making and need more of the alternative options on the video format on a dslr camera.

Its pretty funny that people think high megapixel makes a camera good. High megapixel is a marketing scam. 90% of users are not going to print 12x18 inch pictures. lol
The new movie clip and other add-on (improvement) features are good, but I rather have them improve the ISO and mega pixel, this 12.3 coms sensor is almost 2 years old, I think it's time for Nikon to upgrade that sensor at least 15-18 mega pixels, even my one year Canon 50D has 15 mega pixels.

Having 3mp more on a dx sensor will only have negative effects on image quality, which is why I'm glad Nikon didn't increase the mega pixels, since I work in low light conditions. If had to print massive landscape images all the time, maybe I'd go for the 50d, but anything other than that, it's Nikon.

@lucbessonium it's basic mathematics though lol. the more pixels you have. the lower the signal to noise ratio you will get. look at the D3/D3s/D700 they're virtually noise free at all ISO's my D700 at ISO 12800 gets pretty clean shots compared to my assistant's 5D mk2 (which is canon's best camera currently) my D3X can get better ISO performance than the 5D haha
Are seriously saying that Nikon should sacrifice high iso performance by stuffing 20 mega pixels into a dx sensor just so losers can brag to their friends about it? That's ridiculous!
100-6400? U call it high ISO? if a 5D MARKII can do increase the mega pixels to 21, and boost the usable ISO to 100-6400 and expandable to 12800 or more. All i can say Nikon need to catch up on their COMS technology, even Canon 500D can upgrade to 15 mega pixels and with higher ISO. Every pixel count.
You can't really compare the D300S with the 5D Mark II because the 5D Mark II packs a full frame sensor, allowing it to have 21MP and maintain low noise. A fair comparison would be with the 15MP 50D with a cropped sensor like the D300S, but at that point, you need real quality lenses to fully exploit those 15MP and get the low noise you'd like.
I am, however, quite disappointed in the D300S, its not much new.
What do you mean 100-6400? In the d300s the ISO range is 200-3200 (+6400 expanded), and I'm referring to ISO3200 as "high" iso. I'm not talking about boosted or expanded ISOs that are basically there just for marketing, they are not usable. And Canon 500D.. do you have any idea what you're talking about?! The main problem about that camera is the 15mp sensor! Packing more pixels means smaller pixels, means less light per pixel, means lower iso performance.. also resulting in lower dynamic range!

@rustynasty143 Ok I just watched your slideshows, and now I'm pissed off. You have the nerve to question my talent, and you can't even set the white balance for indoor shots! All the models have yellow skin! All the bridal gowns are yellow! Do I have to mention the horrible overexposures here and there? As a "pro" you should at least have the decency to correct them in Photoshop. I knew you were one of those arrogant pricks behind an expensive camera. I'll do a better job anytime!

@lucbessonium yeah maybe you know something about photoshop or camera exposure, this and that about camera, but there's three things you should know how to become a Pro photographer first thing is how you use, 2nd where to use, 3rd when to use your camera that separate you from other wanna be photographer. As i can see you are just one of the wanna be photographer with a d300s and don't know what to do with it. LOL!

@rustynasty143 First of all, I don't have a D300s. Second, I know what to do with any Nikon DSLR. And yes I know stuff about Photoshop, I've been using it for fifteen years. I am not a wanna be photographer, I'm an amateur photographer who is not pursuing a professional career. You, you can talk shit but you can't do shit, your photographs tell the sad story of a mediocre photographer. So just be quiet until you actually learn the basics of photography.

@lucbessonium Don't be mad dude, ok you know what to do with any nikon dslr and you know stuff about photoshop great but i can care less, even my 5 year old daughter know what you know about camera and photoshop. It is not about what you know dude its about skills of making money of what you love to do. Basic about photography? dude i started 15 years ago with a canon eos 3, canon eos 5 and canon eos 50 film i will say it again film camera with manual settings and no photoshop yet that time.

@lucbessonium it's basic mathematics though lol. the more pixels you have. the lower the signal to noise ratio you will get. look at the D3/D3s/D700 they're virtually noise free at all ISO's my D700 at ISO 12800 gets pretty clean shots compared to my assistant's 5D mk2 (which is canon's best camera currently) my D3X can get better ISO performance than the 5D haha

100-6400? U call it high ISO? if a 5D MARKII can do increase the mega pixels to 21, and boost the usable ISO to 100-6400 and expandable to 12800 or more. All i can say Nikon need to catch up on their COMS technology, even Canon 500D can upgrade to 15 mega pixels and with higher ISO. Every pixel count.

You can't really compare the D300S with the 5D Mark II because the 5D Mark II packs a full frame sensor, allowing it to have 21MP and maintain low noise. A fair comparison would be with the 15MP 50D with a cropped sensor like the D300S, but at that point, you need real quality lenses to fully exploit those 15MP and get the low noise you'd like.
I am, however, quite disappointed in the D300S, its not much new.

What do you mean 100-6400? In the d300s the ISO range is 200-3200 (+6400 expanded), and I'm referring to ISO3200 as "high" iso. I'm not talking about boosted or expanded ISOs that are basically there just for marketing, they are not usable. And Canon 500D.. do you have any idea what you're talking about?! The main problem about that camera is the 15mp sensor! Packing more pixels means smaller pixels, means less light per pixel, means lower iso performance.. also resulting in lower dynamic range!
