i really like this song, and mary is awesome in this video.. do you know where can i find this video in a better quality? i've searched in a lot of forums, torrents, etc.. nothing...
i loved the original and thought this one was great too. the bryan ferry vocal was very straining, yearning, pained, where this one is dreamy, reflective, wistful.
I actually like both versions alot, kind of like comparing the Stone's Wild Horses to the Sunday's cover of Wild Horses-they are both good, just different.
Not a big fan of the 10,000 Maniacs, but this cover of Bryan Ferry's magnificent song is on my top 5. Mary's voice is wonderful on this track. I always get a lift from listening to this song. It blows me away. I don't know about the video, though, with the bionic arm and all. But, thanks for posting this vid, b/c this is a great song.
This is a magnificent cover version and although not a great fan of them i find much of their stuff really good. Mary and of course Nat have lovely voices
This is a delightful cover. Can Mary Ramsey sing, or what? Really bittersweet evocation of the merry-go-round of our affections. The delicious but transient nature of love and friendship - "nothing more than this". ♥ andrea
I had the pleasure of working their first show with Mary as Lead and John Lombardo playing Guitar again. Mary and Natalie are Friends and Mary actually performed on some of Natalies solo stuff. I assure you after seeing her in John and Mary and with the Maniacs, she is her own talent and not trying to be anyone else.
It's funny hearing the Maniacs guitar riffs without Nat's voice. Mary Ramsey has a great voice and presence. I wonder tho, is she trying to act like Nat or not?
I'm confused...Did Natalie Merchant also record this? And wasn't it a hit single? I'm just trying to figure out which one I bought years ago. It sounds the same though :)
No, it is Mary Ramsey, who took Natalie's place when she left. (1st album (CD)) She was the back up singer for several years. Might be why she sounds the same. I thought it was a great cd all the way through.
I think she's classy and brings a certain maturity (?)

This is a case in which a cover is better than the original.

this is a very bland and soulless cover. this is a shame to all things roxy music.

LOL Roxy Music is an exemplar of bland and soulless.
dragmio 2 years ago
Sorry but it was originally recorded by Roxy Music in 1982. Then 10,000 maniacs recorded it in 1997.

Yeah, love Mary Ramsey and John Lombardo. I really don't know why he exited after "The Wishing Chair," which is still my favorite Maniacs' album.
Even so, without Robert Buck it'll never be the same. I miss him.
