I fix my friend's all the time and its not this destructive. I only came looking for something more permanent. I tried soldering, the wires seem to be too thin and the solder does not stay. I usually end up twisting the wires together and electrical taping it together. Looks good too, but it usually lasts only a few months before the dumb ass pulls it apart again. Its getting annoying fixing that damn thing. I'm bout to turn him down next time and tell him time to pop for a new one.
The connector is actually just metal... its the socket on the computer which is the magnet so shaving off the metal connector can also work without loss of the magnetic properties. This is good for pins that have lost their springiness. By shaving off the tip a few millimeters, its makes the limp pin (s) make contact. Worked for me.
Has anyone tried pulling side pins up with jewelry pilers then dapping them with some cyno (super glue) and then hitting the cyno with some activator? Idea being that the pins will stay put and extend long enough to complete circuit and charge.
Great video, got mine up and working again, at least in the mean time. I didn't bother to grind the plastic or even put in back in, I just superglued the magnet back on and ground down the magnet till it worked. Thanks again!

You really saved me! Thank god, I pulled out the charger and half of the end separated! i freaked out thinking I'd need a brand new one! Thanks so much for this!
I did this once and it worked fine. Let me ask you this though. If my wires have worn and broken at the magsafe end, do I take it apart the same way and simply solder the ends of the wire to the magsafe unit? I did repair the unit but as the repairs I made were so close to the magsafe unit, I figured that they heated up the female end of the magsafe unit and would cause damage inside the computer itself. thanks for your video
I was wondering if you tried plugging in the connector without the metal-magnet, and if that worked, or if that was just impossible to keep the connector in place.
Update on my magsafe, I got a pair of pliers and electric grinder and just grinded all around the edges carefully not touching the pins without having to take off the plastic housing. It worked like a charm, just for anyone who tries it and has never used an electric grinder be very VERY careful
thanks for the video! i have similiar problems except one of the pins is pushed all the way in, will try the WD-40 method and this for sure......there is no way im giving Apple anymore of my money
thanks, just did it and worked perfectly. It also just took less than 10 minutes. I also used an 80 grit sand paper for the metal part and a finer one (320) for the plastic, so no need for a metal grinder...
This video tells us how to non-destructively remove the outer plastic part of the plug and how to separate the magnet from the plug, revealing the electrical pins, but says nothing about stuck, broken or faulty electrical pins. It's only suggestion is to grind down the magnet and replace it. When a pin is stuck all the way down, you're going to have to grind a LOT of that magnet away to make contact with that pin. There must be a better solution than just grinding the magnet.

@BarneyMurtz I appreciate your criticism, I guess. My pins weren't so fucked up that they couldn't be fixed. I also suggested that the users watching my video used a Dremel tool instead of a file. If this video wasn't helpful to you, then go watch all of the other videos for fixing a Magsafe charger, Just kidding there aren't any. This is the only fucking one. For stuck pins someone suggested using WD-40.
@alienkwsc After scouring the web, I've concluded that it is a very common problem for the outermost two pins to simply lose the springyness that makes them push on the contacts in the socket. It isn't that they're "stuck", but that they're pushed in and nothing is pushing them out any more. You can get them to come out easily enough, but then they go right back in and stay in again. WD40 won't supply the missing spring action. Alas.
I know this question is not similar to the video but I really need help. My toshiba laptop charger is broken. The metal thingy that plugs in the the computer fell off...I'm not sure how but it got loose. Does any one know how to fix it?
@ThaBestThing17 To be honest, no probably not. But youre in a very different boat whereas your charger is gonna be a cheap replacement as opposed to a magsafe adapter. Check ebay for some hongkong knockoff chargers.
Nice tut, my outer pins lost the springiness so I opened it up and crimped the outer sheath of the pins so they would stay pushed out, worked like a charm...
@alienkwsc haha yeah watching your vid got me thinking, I went to garage to start filling away the metal when I saw a trusty can of WD40...a few sprays later and the problem was solved!!! It makes sense, the pins just get stuck (from dust ect prob) and need to be lubed!
mine i left in overnight and its overheated, it went all blue and, 3 of the pins are broke. im no good with DIY stuff like this and ive only had my mac since christmas. i want to know if i can fix it this way
No all of the steps are necessary actually, Theres not the option to just pull out the magnetic tip with force. You need to expose the inner head by cutting off that hard white plastic and removing the brass pins that hold the metal part on.
Sorry, what I meant to say is that you can pull the plastic shield back from the tip exposing the metal part and circuit board, since the cover is just mounted on.
I clamped only the metal tip on my workbench leaving a cleft of about half a millimeter and then carefully lifted the plastic part with a flat head screwdriver by wedging it in between.
Later, after fixing the problem, I spread a tiny bit of hot glue on the circuit and pushed the plastic part back on with my hands. Looks like new!
my charger isnt working! it worked fine the other day, but now when i plug it in only one side lights up, and it lights up even when its not connected to my laptop! when i unplug it from the wall the orange-ish light flashes and then turns off, my laptop is dead so i need to know how to fix it ASAP! thank you if you know any ways to fix it!
Alright, yeah magsafe blows. so, look into the part of your magsafe adapter that connects to the laptop and look at the pins. do any of them not stand up straight? like mine?

LOL I HAVE SUCH AN EASIER WAY TO FIX THIS!
JUST SPRAY A LITTLE BIT OF W40 INTO THE PINS AND PUSH THEM UP AND DOWN TO LUBRICATE THEM...THEN WIPE ALL EXCESS OFF WITH A RAG.
WORKS PERFECT!!!
