i love catching sunfish they're a real treat to see - I was jigging a full size purple senko once and got a hit under some bushes, thought it was a bass but it was just a bold sunfish!
@coochie2u, your so full of it. You know nothing of these fish. I fish for them all the time in local rivers. They always have vivid color. Pre-spawn, post-spawn and will bedding. I have several in a 100g tank. The area only drab in color when resting or sleeping. This guys fishing with a fly. Cant jerk any thing with one of those noodles. Im sure its nest if it had one survived as Ive seen these fish return back to their nest in a minute after being released only to attack the lure again.
It is a Green Sunfish for sure. Male. Probably was the king-daddy of that little deep spot in the stream. They are usually a drab, olive-green with un-inspiring blue splotches here and there. Judging by the vivid coloration of this one and it's slightly pinched belly, he was obviously jerked off his bed where he was protecting eggs that were almost certainly attacked and eaten by another critter as soon as he was hooked.
@flippintheweeds I don't agree, kentucky bass are alot more slim. That is definately a green sunfish because of its darker color, small orange belly ,and small blue markings on the face
caught lots of these guys flyfishing.THey will hit anything that moves near them, streamer, nymph or popper .they are generally small so i use a 2or 3 weight rod they ,like all other sunfish display a stunning set of colors
