Not even uranium or any other valuable mineral can be brought back in quantities because every single pound would cost much more than it's worth. It's not only the very expensive rockets and fuel. Building bases and transporting equipment and people would cost thousands of billions, and then again, only small quantities of mineral could be brought back in each spaceship.

@snoutastic One of the reasons the Shuttle and spacestation replaced Apollo was that the military was interested, and that USSR was launching space stations. After Challenger the military abandoned the Shuttle and wanted to use their own rockets, like the Titan III instead.
What "better technology" should have made it much cheaper to go to Moon? We still use the same type of rocket engines and fuel, so we still would need the same rocket-weight for each ounce of payload.

@snoutastic I don't know what You know about rocket technology, but the Saturn 5 used liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen as fuel. That's the most efficient chemical fuel that can exist. Nuclear propulsion could be a little more efficient, but can't be used in rockets flying through the atmosphere. Both because of radioactive exhausts and the accident risk. Electronic components are now smaller and more efficient, but they are only a very tiny fraction of a rockets weight.

@snoutastic The Shuttle built a space station (with Russian help). The ISS is still in use. Actually, the Shuttle got much more expensive than planned. At ISS scientists can do a lot of research in micro gravity which is impossible on Earth (for example new materials and medicines). Moon was explored 6 times and nothing extraordinary was found. We now know a lot more about Moon than before Apollo, but why keep on sending people back and forth to big expenses?
@snoutastic The ultimate goal when the Shuttle took over after Apollo , was to go to to Mars. The Space station was to be a stepping stone. USSR had announced they wanted to go to Mars, so USA must make plans too. NASA couldn't afford to both build a space station (it was meant to be much bigger) and continue the Apollo flights.
When USSR collapsed, everything changed. No need to go to Mars in a near future. Get the Russians in, so they didn't sell their knowledge elsewhere. There we are now.

Better explore Mars, where there just might have been liquid water and, may be, some primitive life forms once.
Also, if we kept on flying to Moon, we would have had no space station, where important experiments can be done.

Not even uranium or any other valuable mineral can be brought back in quantities because every single pound would cost much more than it's worth. It's not only the very expensive rockets and fuel. Building bases and transporting equipment and people would cost thousands of billions, and then again, only small quantities of mineral could be brought back in each spaceship.

@snoutastic One of the reasons the Shuttle and spacestation replaced Apollo was that the military was interested, and that USSR was launching space stations. After Challenger the military abandoned the Shuttle and wanted to use their own rockets, like the Titan III instead.
What "better technology" should have made it much cheaper to go to Moon? We still use the same type of rocket engines and fuel, so we still would need the same rocket-weight for each ounce of payload.

@snoutastic I don't know what You know about rocket technology, but the Saturn 5 used liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen as fuel. That's the most efficient chemical fuel that can exist. Nuclear propulsion could be a little more efficient, but can't be used in rockets flying through the atmosphere. Both because of radioactive exhausts and the accident risk. Electronic components are now smaller and more efficient, but they are only a very tiny fraction of a rockets weight.

@snoutastic The Shuttle built a space station (with Russian help). The ISS is still in use. Actually, the Shuttle got much more expensive than planned. At ISS scientists can do a lot of research in micro gravity which is impossible on Earth (for example new materials and medicines). Moon was explored 6 times and nothing extraordinary was found. We now know a lot more about Moon than before Apollo, but why keep on sending people back and forth to big expenses?

@snoutastic The ultimate goal when the Shuttle took over after Apollo , was to go to to Mars. The Space station was to be a stepping stone. USSR had announced they wanted to go to Mars, so USA must make plans too. NASA couldn't afford to both build a space station (it was meant to be much bigger) and continue the Apollo flights.
When USSR collapsed, everything changed. No need to go to Mars in a near future. Get the Russians in, so they didn't sell their knowledge elsewhere. There we are now.

@snoutastic Also: NASA had wanted a smaller Shuttle, but the military demanded a craft that could launch their big spy satellites. Did You know that a complete Shuttle launch facility was built at Vandenberg Air Force base in California, but never used, because Challenger exploded?
After the military backed out and USSR collapsed, the Space station was stripped down to the size of today.
Recently the government stopped NASAS new plans to visit Moon, due to the cost.

@snoutastic The only reason NASA got the huge amount of money back in the 60's was the Cold War. USA had to show the world that it was not a second-place nation in space. After the race to Moon was won, the public, and consequently the politicians, lost interest in Moon-journeys and Apollo was killed prematurely.
It's not NASA's fault, they had planned extended Apollo expeditions with unmanned landers, both to transport equipment and to use as "living rooms". Plus bigger rovers and "flyers".

If the lunar landing was a hoax, the Soviets would be the first ones to blow the whistle on NASA. Hundreds, if not thousands of telescopes tracking it, there is no way it's a fake. I can't believe Buzz himself said that. I once heard that he was surrounded by "conspiracy theorists" that challenged him about the moon landing being ral. He punched one of them out.

I'm not saying that man didn't land on the moon but the camera follows the craft blasting away from the moon when they leave,i always thought the poor cameraman was just left there to die.

@TheQuadrophenic The camera was mounted to the lunar rover,It was controlled from Houston,Texas remotely,we were that smart,we could do math back then too,amazing,time delay from moon to earth,climb rate,feet per second,gravity 1/6 of earth,tilt,pan rate,distance to lander,etc we could figure it all out ,even in 60's and 70's.Get out of the basement and do a little research,don't be a ass hole like these other idiots.400,000 people worked on Apollo,it's a insult to their incredible feat.
