A quite great film! Nothing complicated or shocking but brought uninmaginable feelings to viewers.

ZiYi shone in this film! I love all of her gestures, her eye-sight, her smile, all the ways she expressed her emotion. We found a very different ZiYi in comparison to what she acted in swords film. I have nothing to say, but, deeply impressive, awsome!

@TheLocalcat Isn't not leaving someone for the rest of your life not enough for you? He obviously thought of her from the first moment. He had much little time to think about her as well and his life was much more complex because of his work but it is clear from the whole atmosphere that feelings we're from both sides, I have no idea why you would think otherwise.

@ighnaz I think you just got the point... This story comes from mom's memories, then it must be a one side story. This movie is way much beyond a romantic story; it is the deep love over ages, with true admire and trust. All these emotions burst out when she ran to the school in the snow. I love this simple story filled with beautiful sensation.

I know my mother sacrificed so much just to come to america. She doesn't eat food herself, but would give it to me and my brother/sister. She tries to save every penny she can while I just spend it on clothes. I go out and have fun with my friends while my mother is at home thinking of her children. I feel like a disgrace and I feel terrible for yelling at my mother whenever I get angry.

@Bklynballerplaya Mothers don't want much from their children. Apologize to your mother and give her a hug and a kiss and tell her how much you appreciate her. That's all she wants. I'm sure she doesn't think you're a disgrace and has forgiven you much and loves you much if she has sacrificed so much for you all. Sounds like you have a sensible head on your shoulders if you can recognize the sacrifice that your mother has made for you.  Blessings, : )

No razzle dazzle, special effects or anything like that. Just character development, drama, symbolism and a carefully crafted plot.

Hollywood has a lot to learn from Chinese writers, producers, directors and actor/actresses.

Great film, though I am sure that I saw it in a slightly different version in Spain. Zhang's performance is up there with Meryll Streep in the Bridges of MC in terms of sheer expression of attraction and love. Someone said 80% crying. I went beyond that. The final bit when she runs down once again to the school is an all time great bit of film making.

Similarly, Ziyi's performance here is way better and carry more depth than her later martial art movies, which seemed formulaic. The picture......man......I didn't know tears can stream down a man's eyes 80% of the film's run and the constant reach for Kleenix. Gentleman, watch this film and give your wives and kids a big hug!

This is indeed a very powerful film conveying messages viewers before had mentioned. Director Zhang fared better in this movie than his later movie "Heroes", by the use of colors and scenery to convey emotions.

I love this movie. The use of color, the music, and the simplicity of her love all works together.

What strikes me the most: the true value of things cann't be measure by their usefulness, but by their relationship to the people we love. The broken bowl, hairclip and his father's book were precious, not because of their usefullness, price or the labor invested in them (labor theory of value) , but from the love that they symbolized.

Love told simply. The picture of mum and dad is the window to the whole story. The red jacket becomes the road that we walk. The widow's monologue in the class after the husband's death is something out of this world. The classroom becomes the altar where the marriage vows are sealed. Then there is the broken plate and hair clip. No sex, no kissing....just the ordinary...love is ordinary! Alongside Todo Sobre Mi Madre, Life Is Beautiful,....this film is one of the greatest stories ever told!

I am not sure why this movie touches me so. I enjoy Chinese cinema, and I teach, but this film uses such a simple story to convey the depth of the humanity: the desire to learn; true & pure love; beauty in simplicity (the hair clip & the dish); the belief in ideals (Luo as an academic must have been a rightist); the purpose of & commitment to family; finally honour (the return of the students.) I can't think of a movie that delves into these subjects without being patronizing. A great film.
