  • Прекрасная песня! Благодарю за чудесное видео! Наилучшие пожелания!

  • wtf. Is this really legal to do this?

  • can anyone tell me where i can get a copy or an upload of "I was in chains" from this album, iv`e looked all over you tube thanks. sarah

  • Brillante, como en el 85....

  • as a tom waits fan....this is heresy

  • This album was playing when I lost my virginity. Fantastic cover and great memories. Ta MarcelBonzo

  • Great trombone solo

  • Bloody hell.Never heard this version before. Much prefer the Tom waits original but this is a good effort. Thanks for sharing.

  • one of the best songs i ever heard !!! No exageration !! and I AM a retired soldier. Thanks for a heart wrenching rendition, better than the original !!!!!!

  • Great cover of Tom Watts

  • Pino's bass playing is outstanding here.

  • C du bon

  • absolutely love this song, such an amazing voice

  • I like this from the beginning.

What happenned with Paul. He is the best!

Why don't we hear anymore from him?

  • ok, im gonna get bashed I know it... but honestly I didn't liked it... for me in my own personal opinion, this song its so much more beautiful and suited for Tom's whiskey soaked, tobacco smoked voice...

  • This is a brilliant song from a wonderful album, thanks for posting!

  • BRILLIANT! LOVED THIS SONG!!!

  • it's a song of the secret of association. One of the best albums, i know. Great song!!!

  • very cool bass play!!!

  • @sy4444miko That is Pino Paladino...!!

  • I heard this on the radio in 1986, this song (and the scratched LP) goes with me ever since.

    Thank you !

  • I wore out 3 different tapes and one LP of this album. Have it on cd now, need to back it up on a thumb drive soon.

  • Yes, you are correct, it was written by Tom Waits. I love this version, especially for the orchestra at the end. To me it is better then the original one.

  • I have it on the vinyl and it sounds awsome.

  • I'm sorry! Paul Young has the voice and the compassion to carry all blues off!!!

  • He wrestles with the song, but pulls it out at the end.

The arrangement is wack, but he makes this song work out of sheer determination.

  • Have a drink for the memories..For the code..

  • mega! so good to be able to hear it again after all these years. Showing my age. A great cover is the sign of a truly great song writer such as leon rosselson, paul simon, his bobness etc much prefer the bangles hazy shade of winter to simon and garfunkle original, which shows its a fabuluous song innit? Well done Paul

  • This version is ok, but it doesn`t move me like Waits do!

  • this song takes you to a place! it's got a feel....sad and yet soothing.............LOVE THIS!

  • Tell what you want, Wait`s songs in peace blabla, iàm old, a Zappa freak and a Waits lover , but this version is great ! Thank you very much for posting !

    michael

  • Well said... a truly great original, but this is a great cover too. I also thank you for posting.

  • Big up for Paul

a Bedfordshire buddy, up the Luton LOL

  • i personally think this one is better than the original by mr. waits.....normally i also prefer original songs, but this is perfect.

to me it's the atmosphere created by the combination of the keys, bass and the voice.

    thanks for placing!!

  • I totally agree with you. I mostly appreciate the originals of any song, because the covers mostly sound like poor imitations, but this is so wonderful. The atmosphere is wonderful, pulls at the heart strings. I think of my father whenever I hear this, who was a military man for 26 years. Paul did an excellent job of this song!

  • @anitaatsisteract I would prefer Paul Young singing with the Tom Waits background. Here the production and especially the digital drums suck.

  • I suppose I am yet another who was weened on cover versions of supposedly great originals but I have to say I much prefer Paul's version. No discredit to Mr Waits - after all music is universal and if it can reach out to someone, for whatever reason, all the more powerful

  • Wow. I'm amazed that anyone likes this...however, I've only ever heard Tom Waits' version...which I love. This sounds like complete crap to me. Still, it shows how wide-spread a great songwriter's influence is.

  • i lv this song..remember in 83' at cottage. oh...

  • Truthfully I could like it if I didn't know and love the original version. I can see how one can think its great but to me, a Tom Waits lover, it just can't compare but better than other covers I've heard, I'll give it that for sure, listen to the original version though.

  • You got to give him a chance. It was the 80's. Music was awful. He was a pop singer at the height of his powersand this choice of song was a big gamble. I think he does a

credible version, sings it well, and Pino IS GREAT!!

  • Leave Tom Waits' songs in peace will you, compared to the original this is a complete disaster. Oh, yes Mr. Young can sing but he takes the soul right out of the song. The best tribute to Tom Waits is NOT to f*ck up his songs !!! Is that so difficult???

  • No, no, no! You're wrong , pal!

  • Fantastic, i love this song, do actually remember getting this album on cassette, i wore it out on my walkman back in the day!

  • Never knew Paul covered this . Great stuff . Paul Young is a brilliant singer - Not ashamed to admit I own his greatest hits !!!!! Well some people own WESTLIFE CD's so hey , - no names mentioned !!!!

  • Cheers...been looking for this for ages.

  • Thanks, enjoy!!!!

  • lo mejor de lo mejor

  • Beautiful song!

  • I am a fan of both versions of this song. This one makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. The original is more 'smokey'!! Nice one Paul...!

  • Not bad...but I think the simple piano and Tom Wait's brilliant voice express the uselessness of war in a better way...

  • as already mentioned, fantastic bass line played by pino paladino and great vocals by paul young, love that 80's electric sound

  • I understand that this guy has his following. but he really doesn't do this song justice. only toms mournful voice and piano can really catch the uselessness of war and what we have left of a person after.

  • Platon, yu know nutin' bout nutin' ... meet yu at 01:03 and 02:25 yu and your uselessness... meet you at 03:27, don't be left..

  • omg.. i like this sound so mysterious. In 1983 i driven to cottage..so classic, beautiful thing.

  • to fuxyhau : ahh . . this version was released in 1985

  • very sophisticated and painful, Paul's version is brilliant:-) thanks, I haven't heard it before.

  • Hee, you're welcome, I am glad that I can surprise people now and then.... enjoy!

  • This song is my favorite by Paul young. It is so mysterious and mystical.

5 starred and saved in playlist "P"

    Thanks!

  • DandBProductionsInc - It's actually a cover, the original is by Tom Waits, and can be found on his 1983 album Swordfishtrombones. Oh, and there's an error in the title of this video. The song's name is "Soldier's Things" (plural) not "...Thing".

  • a one bass playing by pino paladino

  • Thanks for sharing

  • Beautiful song ,soulful singing ,but absolutely terrible production IMHO,

  • Production could not have been done worse, but this whole album is Paul Young at his best, at least in my opinion!

Thanks for your response and let us just enjoy this cover-version!
