As the filmmakers and Joe R. Landsdale himself said on the commentary, they really have to make a lot of additions to make it work as a horror movie. Don Coscarelli even said that he felt intimidated by the gore the other directors like Carpenter and Argento were doing, because that wasn't the heart of the story at all. But overall, I think it works. And like with my 'Cigarette Burns' comments, I think this one deserved more than just a few comments. All in all, a good intro to the series. :)

...as a feature length movie. 60 minutes is bad enough, but extending it to two hours?! O_O There's no way that was going to work. All things considered though, I'm glad they gave it a chance here. It's a neat little picture that I enjoyed watching. It may not fit perfectly with 'Masters of Horror', though, because it's not a 'horror' movie at heart. This is a suspense story, being shoehorned into the horror genre. From what I heard, Moonface wasn't even that deformed in the short story!

I do think it would have been an interesting twist if the monster turned out to be the husband (that's what I was thinking when I saw it), but that's not the way Joe R. Lansdale wrote it. On the other hand, the short story was only 8 pages long. It's obvious they really had to pad this out, and I can't even imagine how Don Coscarelli once had this optioned...

The main problem is with the husband. We know he must have had some good qualities, because she fell for him. But because the movie runs under 60 minutes, we can't see that. So they have to focus on the negative. I think it would have added something to the movie to see that, even if it was just one or two more minutes of scenes. The people who are saying she got what she deserved are missing the point. A lot of people choose wrongly in their relationships. Look at guys, and how they throw...

They couldn't change the ending unless they wanted to change the entire message of the story, which was that humanity got its own scheme turned around on them. It's the same thing here. Anyway, I think this is one of Don Coscarelli's finer efforts. I think this is one of the episodes, though, where they could have used a little more time. Some of them run too short, and others are overextended. This is one of the former.

I wonder how many people will watch this and not realize it's based on a short story written by an actual author? o_O It's kinda hard to miss here, since it's in the description, but when they're watching the DVD, some people might inexplicably miss that little fact. The actual ending here is the one in the story, (with the car trunk). It reminds me of 'The Screwfly Solution', and how some people on Amazon said the ending was a weak effort on the writers' part...

I think the ending is so great because it's NOT the same guy. In other words, she thinks that relationship with the guy who taught her how to survive (inadvertently and on purpose) was something she's just glad to be out of but then here's this situation where it all comes in really handy. Plus, how can anyone watch this without focusing a bit more on this woman as an actress. WOW! I really loved her in this.
