i got hooked when i watched this anime....then i heard the manga had a better ending.. so...i read it .......the manga is way better than the anime....and the light novel is way better than the manga...*thumbs up*
@Nincom69 I think it is because they tend to be 'fragile' and (forgive me for the assumption, I haven't seen the series so I don't know about the perspective) full of emotion hidden inside and therefore need all the more caring. I could be way off, nonetheless. :P
I'm thinking of watching this series, but I'm still in doubt: does it rely/focus on "moe" and "ecchi" or is it really a psychological adventure?
@Flumblee Its really hard to say. I also haven't seen the series(i think my complete collection delivers on Monday) but i've read the Manga. Sometimes its psychological but mixed with comedy. Thats hard to explain in english :P
There are moeish hints and a bit of fanservice in this series, but they can't be defined a really relevant theme. They're present just in some episodes.
This series' plot focuses mainly on an hikkikomori's everyday life, even in its more miserable and sad sides and on the possibility to overcome this status.Surprisingly, characters interaction often involves comedy, too.
This anime, this song, the characters, they all mean so much to me, so very much, i can't explain but this anime has really made impact on me, it has open my eyes and motivated to change, and to find my misaki
@dawkot1 ups sorry bad my, no ''was'' IS EPIC, a few days ago I watch this anime and I still am left with the desire to see it again from the beginning.
I love it SO much, I've only watched about 6 episodes, but it's already my favorite anime I've ever seen. I've got pretty severe social anxiety, so yeah... Just leaving my house is a chore, and it's hard to talk to people. But this anime has really helped! It's shown me that I CAN get better if I really want to, Tatsuhiro is actually REALLY cool imo. And the thing that amazes me is, I'm just like him!
I can really relate to the characters! Great anime, great anime....
My Best Friend thought this show was a joke until episode 5, where he brought me in. This anime was good enough for me to watch About Twice in one sitting. This Anime will change your life if your suicidal, isolated, some form of aspergers, it will change you,
3 years ago I watched this show and it brought me tears and laughs and it was the road I was heading on. Today I'm a happy guy, heading to the Navy hoping to become a Seal and have a girl who makes me very happy. I was just going through my youtube favorites and this was here :')
@cobian2006 its really hard to find anything this caliber, nhk was one of the bets animes out there and its extremly original
only similarity i can fidn is in a much clamer but much sadder show called clannad, the main character is a all around fuck up who has a terrible life but then he meets a girl named nagisa and things change.
k actually thats a lie his life is pretty shit throughout the serise but thats the one similarity i could find with this show, though clannad is much more calm
I watched the dubb, and both are good. I love how this anime doesn't shy away from discussing REAL problems that people have. I watched this anime about a few months ago, and loved every bit of it. I'll never forget this. After watching this anime, I've learned to laugh more and live my life in a more humorous manner.
This show showed me exactly how scary it is to go outside and how easy it is for people to judge someone, that's why I always tell everyone what the whole point of going outside is and what good is friends when you have video games and anime to keep you company, right?
@iilego08 honey, go outside, get a job, make some friends, have fun. staying in side with only games and anime....is not healthy for you AT ALL. you need human interaction
I watched this anime while my wife first decided that she hated me i can't watch this show because of all the feelings that come back when i try, but it did help make me feel better. I was hoping for some kind of ending that would show that life gets better and there really wasn't one it just ended with a message of "life is mediocre just try to endure it"
but what i took from NHK was that life doesn't just GET better, you have to MAKE it better. sato and misaki were both miserable. but by working at it, and helping each other, they were happy.
maybe not a fairy tale ending, but those endings are hardly realistic.
A great anime that should've recived a bit more attention... but since Haruhi was so popular back in 2006, it technically overshadowed every single anime at that time...
Is it really that hard to step outside? I mean even i can admit that i'd rather stay inside and watch anime than go outside and live everyday life, talk to people, and have a job but its not that hard to say hi to someone
Why do people think this anime is realistic? Misaki is pretty much an angel descended from the heavens.
It's a great show, don't get me wrong, but it's biggest problem is that it is overly optimistic and not harsh enough- probably because it doesn't want to offend the sensibilites of its audience.
There are people out there who really are Hikikomori... but how many of them will have Misaki stopping at their door?
This Anime is realistic enough, it doesn't mean every detail has to be considered into probability of x happening or y happening, of course many people want to help Hikkormori in realistic terms but in Satou's case it's not family but a girl.
@checkyay Probability? As far as I can see, Misaki is pretty much a deus ex machina; without her the story would not be possible (indeed she does trigger the whole story) and yet the circumstances behind her helping Satou are improbable to say the least.
The only parts of NHK that are 'realistic' are the themes. The story itself is complete fantasy. Considering the whole point of the story is hikikomori coming back to society, doesn't that render the whole thing rather pointless?
You want to see a hikkormori on the computer 24/7 as a anime? Of course not. Not everything is real but there's enough realism in the show. Even if Misaki helping is not something very likely to happen at all, it probably does happen to the lucky few and that's what they made a story about, even if it isn't likely to happen doesn't mean it can't be realistic.
@ExileOnPrincesSt The theme itself, pacing of everyday events, and overall atmosphere is realistic. Minus the talking pudding, as that's an hallucination or overly active imagination. The unrealistic part being Misaki, is the flying wrench thrown in to make the story compelling.
@varnlestoff Oh, I can understand that she fills a role in the series, I just think it would have been better if they had done so in another, more realistic or believable way. Works of fiction do get some liberties, but works of satire like NHK are at their best when they are brutal and realistic. If it had showcased the end result of Hikikomori life, then it would have been far more poignant. Not only because it's more realistic, but more depressing too.
Yeah if u like welcome to the NHK check out Denpa teki na Kanojo, main character is almost exactly like Satou was in High School, very underated OVA.
I couldnt go outside for like 3 days after watching this anime, so depressing. I was hoping for him to bang Hitomi Kashiwa (his senpai) That woulda made me feel better.
Not that the alleged time in highschool, Btw if u read the manga it leads u to believe he didnt (Serious fanboy comment im writting right now, sigh......).
This anime reminded me alot of FLCL; though strange in execution, it deals with alot of life's harsh realities, especially for those not so better off. Whereas FLCL had to do with becoming a man and dealing with your emotions, NHK had to do with living a difficult adult life and what to do with your future. Strange how animes always pop up at particular times in my life
After exactly one month, I finally finished the series. I enjoyed it, but certain episodes seemed to drag on and on and some Satou's actions were just straight facepalm status. Ending was sort of a feel good ending.
i had hunter x hunter like the best anime of all.......before i saw this, this is the best anime i have ever seen, all the character are greats, in mi case i loved misaki.
This anime saved me. It has helped me so much with my troubles from school and parents. I remember I would lie in my bed late at night, get on my phone, and just use this series as an escape from reality. It will always hold a special place in my heart.
@AudioAnime I felt the same way about anime in general when I was in High School so I can totally relate to that. I just finished re-watching Welcome to the NHK today and I have to say out of all the anime I own or have seen this one is one of the best and what makes it good is how we can relate to it because its rooted in the real world (sure there are some over the top comedy moments) but the show is rooted in reality and in fact sometimes I wonder if I'm not Sato myself in some ways.
please!, i watched this and i loved it. but now i feel sad because i want to see something like this. another realistic good anime, if anyone have any recomendation please reply me :) .
oh, other good animes with good drama and serious stuff as good as this are "Itazura na kiss" and "clannad" watch them if you want some anime as good as this.
@ICharlyl Yeah, Itazura na kiss is a very very good anime. I loved it a lot. Definitely one worth watching, but it is more geared towards girls though. It had a the perfect ending, just what I wanted.
I might stay in a lot but that's because, where I live it's winter most of the time. Luckly Summer is right around the corner and I'll be out more often and even go on a cruise :D I'm a nerd who stays in a lot who wishs to get out more and trys to do so everyday :D (cuz man I'm out of shape lol)
I geuss the anime applies to me in a way because I'm a big otaku nerd. I love anime, manga, and I absolutely love video games. But I do go outside and hang out with friends regularly. I take martial arts and stuff.
But I get extremely anxious when I get near girls. I'm not gay or anything, but I get really frightened being near girls. They're like a different race of beings to me. I never have to courage to talk to them.
If the world was filled with girls only, I'd be too sacred to go out.
THE best series I've ever stumbled upon. I'm so happy I found it. It's been over 3 years since I've watched it. I'm going to watch it again this summer.
I love all this comments, i think this is the only place where people can understand how I feel, well it makes sense too because the whole NHK story was written by a hikikomori himself( Tatsuhiko Takimoto ) using his own experiences he wrote a novel a first person view that is much darker than the anime version. If you guys love this anime you should really support this guys work he is an inspiration to many people including me.
BTW, if anyone really liked the anime, the manga, IMO, is a lot more darker and just has a lot of stuff the anime kinda left out. But give the manga a read if you really were into this anime. I think the manga is about 43ish chapters long.
@RinseNRepeat way to get offensive lil douchebag, I didn't literally mean it as a syndrome it just resembles a syndrome a lot except the social withdrawal of mostly developed by the person himself
This is anime is a microcosm of almost every anime viewers life, It gets to everyone because how real it is. Satou had so many redeemable qualities that you wonder y things went bad for him, and u want so bad for him to succeed because deep down u want so bad to succeed.
This anime is so damn real, it makes u think. I love animes like this because you can identify with the characters so much that it hurts
I know you're trying to be nice but saying it's a microcosm of almost every anime viewers life is a real stretch. Not all anime viewers are even in the ballpark of what Satou had to go through you know. Just be careful, what you said was rather presumptous.
I was speaking of a segment of the anime viewing community (i.e. mostly Otakus) I hang out with these guys (As well as ppl who dont watch anime) and yeah this show is spot on. Ok there are ppl who dont have any of the problems posted by this video, and if thats the case then hey thats great for u.
But every single person who i know that watches anime had to deal with one issue or another from this show. It just comes with the territory.
Loved the show but hate that the main guy is rescued by a cute girl. Just further set up for hikikomori folk to stay inside waiting for their messiah figure.
@danni13371 i dont know any off the top of my head. but there seem to be a fair amount with one or more of those themes. but probably not as good as this series.
This anime changed my life.

This series is infectious. Screw summer, I'm watching it now. I can't express how much I enjoyed this series.

THE best series I've ever stumbled upon. I'm so happy I found it. It's been over 3 years since I've watched it. I'm going to watch it again this summer.

this anime is actually pretty amazing, it made a big splash just like FLCL did

JAMurida1 10 months ago
The meaning behind this opening and just the way it was put together was so well done. Probably one of the best anime openings I've ever seen.

Anime viewers can relate to this because theyre all autistic teenagers with no lives who dont get laid. This show is shit.
Pcoar 10 months ago
@Pcoar The show is about NEET's, if you go to school you're not really a NEET.
Please go away from here you're obviously not able to understand this..

@TheDragoviR Keep your autism under control, bud.

I loved this anime, only disappoints me a little that this anime does not really express what a person with the hikikomori syndrome really is
NeXuzBakaneesan 10 months ago
@NeXuzBakaneesan It's not a "syndrome" you faggot. Stop acting like the victim when you're not the victim.
RinseNRepeat 10 months ago
@RinseNRepeat way to get offensive lil douchebag, I didn't literally mean it as a syndrome it just resembles a syndrome a lot except the social withdrawal of mostly developed by the person himself

This is anime is a microcosm of almost every anime viewers life, It gets to everyone because how real it is. Satou had so many redeemable qualities that you wonder y things went bad for him, and u want so bad for him to succeed because deep down u want so bad to succeed.
This anime is so damn real, it makes u think. I love animes like this because you can identify with the characters so much that it hurts

@Sandman09z
Hey pal,
I know you're trying to be nice but saying it's a microcosm of almost every anime viewers life is a real stretch. Not all anime viewers are even in the ballpark of what Satou had to go through you know. Just be careful, what you said was rather presumptous.
waltlantz 6 months ago
@waltlantz
Sandman09z 6 months ago
Loved the show but hate that the main guy is rescued by a cute girl. Just further set up for hikikomori folk to stay inside waiting for their messiah figure.

Does this have nudity or alot of violence? looking to avoid anime with it. Wanna watch because of subject matter.
MrSeven13 11 months ago
@MrSeven13 Violence? haha no. There's quite a lot of nudity though but you don't see everything.

@Nuxhead Thanx for the info. Guess i'll go ahead with the order then.

@natterrtatterr how do you mean?
boethiah12 11 months ago
@boethiah12
He probably means one that deals with the same problems as this anime; hikikomori, loneliness, boredom, improvement of life.
At least that's what I saw in this anime. Probably my favorite anime ever, even though I've only watched about 6-7.
danni13371 11 months ago
@danni13371 i dont know any off the top of my head. but there seem to be a fair amount with one or more of those themes. but probably not as good as this series.
