Great video for a dork like me who is scared of installing android and fucking up my touch pad....i bought mine for 299 :( will wait for another 6 months to see what happens with the development and also to see if open source does anything with the web os software. Thanks for posting :)
hey Brad can you tell me if dish remote access is available on CyanogenMod 7.1 Alpha3 Android on the HP TouchPad? because I need that App to my shows since it's not on the HP App catalog. I would really appericate it...
If you were to download an app on the Android market while running Android OS then reboot under the WebOS would the Android app still be available to use while on the different OS and vise versa?
Just did mine today to Cyanogenmod 7.1 and all went ok. It was useless until I added Google Apps update. It all works ok, but what a PITA the update process is compared to iPad. Netflix works but the Android Youtube app sucks. I did the Android thing to learn about Android. So far I am not impressed.
What would you say is the percentage of a brick/major problem occurring during installation? I really want to try Android on my TouchPad, but I don't like the idea of bricking my Touchpad. I used to do PSP custom firmwares for many people, but there was a way to reverse a brick if it ever occurred. Is there a reversal the Touchpad as well? Thanks.
Hey i was wondering if i install android well flash still work and can i still have the beats audio speakers to play and would it brick my device and would it void my warranty. sorry for all these question i just need to know.
I put android on and it was working fine. It would boot into both webos and android. But while I was in webos I selected "full erase" and the touchpad shut off and when I reboot it, it won't reboot into webos, only into android. When I look at the files on my hp touchpad, the cminstall folder is gone. Is that what may be the problem? Somebody please help!
JK NVM!, i just installed it on my touchpad. I was able to find dolphin browser in the market. But it also supported 3rd party apps so i was able to download apks off the web & install ie Amazon app store. I was also able to get games where the accelerometer worked ie Doodle jump. Also supports different launchers. I changed the preinstalled ADW launcher to Go launcher w/ a honeycomb theme. Also was able to download skype. it "supported" video calls but only audio workd. thanks for the preview!
So were you saying that even if you just want cyanogenmod, the WebOS operating system will still take up space on the internal storage drive? Do you have the 16 or 32GB version? How much room is available for storage after you load CM7? I ask because the Touchpad doesn't have an SD card slot and I want to determine if I should get the 16 or 32GB version...
Hey brad I have a question for you: I was thinking about picking up the Touchpad with Android for christmas, but I was reading the article on liliputing about the alpha 3 build of Cyanogen Mod and I saw that a new bug arose: Headphones dont work. Do you know if this happens often or if this occasion is rare? Thanks.
Great video man, glad to hear the cyanogenmod team are going to support ics for the touchpad cause I'm getting one for Christmas it will be here in 3days woot
@BradLinder Hello Brad. my bro gave me hp touchpad, i tried all the reset options but it still has 6 GB space consumed. i tried webos doctor and a few more things but it wont work. i want it back to stock version. i want to know whats consuming the 6gb space. Help me out please.
Hello, i tried downloading this using my MAC but everything worked great except when it got to the rebooting of the Touchpad, where u have the too pinguins, it stopped at ""looking for the install images... initial install files not found. please download it from touchpad.linuxhacker.ru and put in sminstall folder on media partition. the name should start with update-cm end end with .zip""...so can you please help me???
@diorleboss if i remember correctly, by default macOS automatically unzips files that have .zip extensions. or perhaps one of the macOS web browsers does that. you may either need to re-zip the file, or disable the option that's automatically unzipping your zip files.
webos 3.0.4 which was released today makes touchpad run a bit more smoothly but not that good to compare to android. ill install android as soon as the stable version comes out
I have it installed and working great except for the camera. It works sorta once, but doesnt actually take the picture. Then a force shutdown is requested... If I restart, I am able to use the camera once more... I have to say this is absolutely beautiful work by these nice folks who made this. Cant wait for the next version to be released ;-)
You can use Skype for text chats. And you can make voice calls -- but you'll sound like a chipmunk. I called a friend and he sounded fine, but my audio sounded very strange to him.
There was no video option at all for Skype -- I don't think it detected the camera.
CyanogenMod's camera progress is still... a work in progresss. You can fire up the camera app and look at yourself, but you can't snap photos.
This an awesome video post. If you decide to reboot or start over fresh (for any reason) could you please make a guide on how to uninstall it cleanly? Right now, my TP has speaker cracks but I still wanted to keep it. If the crack gets bigger, I will send it to HP. I just want to make sure that when I send it for repair or replacement, they will not find any traces of me installing CM7 thus voiding the warranty.

Android is a much better OS for the TP! It is a lot smoother and feels faster and more powerful!
If you want to learn how to install CM9 (Android) and dual boot your TouchPad, check this out, it was the only video that helped me!

Thank you for the very thorough visual and commentary. I am very pleased to hear the specifics as to updating the ROM via wifi update rather than re-flashing a new ROM. I had been holding back as I was uncertain of ROM update and had no desire to apply a new ROM each time the MOD is updated.
I am also interested if the core Alien Dalvik is being worked on for WebOs as a card rather than a full install of Android.
I am impressed with the browser activity and speed. Thanks Greatly!
