I think all of you guys are forgetting Conway Twitty. He never drank, did drugs, or anything. He is just so AMAZING. Conway Twitty is real country, these guys are too, but Twitty is the King. And he never did bad things.
I like your list. I think these people illustrate a point. They are/were all so unique that you can immediately say who it is when you hear them even if they are singing something new. A lot of the "new" talent being pushed today is so out of the cookie mold that you can't identify one from another. And loud and frantic is not really a substitute for good talent.
I think Merle got hurt from drugs and alcohol, and so did a lot of my musician friends. What amazes me is how Willie seems to have it all together. The man must have a direct link to Heaven where they keep pouring the songs down into his head.
@johngideongraham Right, sex, drugs and rock n roll. Willie is one of the greatest, next to Hank, Lefty, Buck, George, Waylon, Kris, Johnny and Merle.
They may perform it outside the USA, but it can only come from the USA.
P.S. I have always been against drugs because they kill and maim so many of us, but I have wonder how harmful MJ is when Willie has used it all his life and he is certainly still straight in his brain today. I wish I was half the musician Willie is. I think Merle may forgive him or overlook it in his case.
@johngideongraham That's not true. I saw Merle Haggard & The Strangers live on stage during their Europe Tour. International Festival of Country Music, Eastern 1978 Rotterdam in Holland, Organisation: Mervin Conn
BTW: Many people in Germany and Europe likes the original good old Country Music of the USA, not the Nashville music of today.
Your right. Merle pulled his head out of his ass one day and figured out that sending your son off to get killed for something you never understood but did what you were told because politicians never lie. Only war is big business and your son was a connon ball. There was a period where he wouldn't sing this song. Now, its humour of days gone by before we started to read and question.
Willie smoked the green so much, the doc told him he had stop. He said, "I've smoked enough to fill a silo!" Merle no doubt burned it too, after he hung up his redneck corn-cob-up the hind end ways and became human!
Classic American song. We all have different views and interpretations, as a center-left politically minded person, this song justifies what it is to be hard working, sound judgement, straight living, Midwest American.

@johngideongraham Merle also used it all his life, many time he lost the lyrics and Bonnie needed to help him. Look into his eyes and you can see it.

They could have never done this in any other country. God Bless the USA!

I think this song was originally a pun. He never wanted it to be taken seriously just kind of happened. Then he had to make people understand it.
