We need to put what is said in context before we make a judgement about the person who made statement.

What about the kids in Michigan, Louisiana and Kentucky? Those states have a government body and a functioning school system that is very accessible, not to mention affluent residents that are able to affect legislation to improve that same educational system. In addition, those "white folks" willingly donate money to a very solid foundation; if not Oprah's, then some other, that donates to needed causes in and out of this country.

It seems to me you were anticipating a race related issue to the point where you were not listening to the context of Oprah's speech. She was not being racist all she was pointing out was the barriers she had to overcome growing up in the 50's and 60's and if you knew anything about Howard you would know that the school was developed during a time where African-Americans weren't allowed to attend majority of the nation's colleges. The school itself is about breaking barriers and inner pride.

You know what... I'm one of the graduates of Howard's Class of 2007, and I wasn't exactly excited to see Oprah.... but she did a surprisingly good job. I appreciated what she had to say. Go Howard! I Miss you! :(
