Why did God place us under a law that we had no hope of fulfilling? (I'm a Christian, I just don't understand this part.)

@Keepintouch121807 : Hope has nothing to do with it--we're talking about our ETERNAL condition here. Jesus gave us a new contract, literally, "The New Testament of Jesus Christ". The requirement: that we love each other and treat each other as well as we possibly can, and avoid the enemy's people.

@buzzclick500 Yes, I get that. I absolutely believe in every word of the bible and know Jesus as my Lord and Savior, I just don't understand why we were placed under a law that we could not fulfill in the first place? Jesus came because we could not fulfill the requirements of the law, so he came to be a sin offering and fulfill the law for us. Why were we placed under a law that we could not fulfill? Was it to highlight that we need God because if we did it alone we would not depend on God?
