  • rofl its an ignition coil... you wont die. sure some coils such as those found in the old gm hei systems could produce about 30 Kv open circuit but the amperage is so low you can grab one of the plug wire ends and you'll feel it but you aint gonna die, current is too low, with enough math you could find the current easily...

  • One day I'm going to muck about with an ignition coil and see what I can do with it. I've done this with a flyback transformer from a TV, and the arcs in the bulb were purple, and even the glass glows. I used a DC flyback with a bad internal diode, I didn't realize at the time that an AC flyback had to be used or the diode was bad, so I couldn't figure out why it only worked with this flyback, but not with any of the others I had, course now I know different.

  • @ladev1988 Well light bulbs like that are not pressurised they are in fact at a very low pressure and although the voltage it very high the current is extremely low so isn't going to get hot any time soon.

  • Yes there is, it couldn't possibly be a total vacuum because it would implode. Bulbs are filled with an inert gas, usually argon and I'm sure if you looked at the spectral lines of the light being emitted here it would match argon.

  • Actually a plasma is a gas which has become ionised due to the gain or loss of electrons. This can be induced via interaction with other electrons and certain types of radiation. In tho video the electrons being emitted from the filament strike atoms, likely to be argon in this case. They gain an electron and move to a higher energy level, as they fall back down to their standard energy level a photon is given out. So I think you will find this is plasma look up the meaning of the damn word.

  • haha :p it seems to me that most americans speak before they think, also something that surprised me abit a few weeks ago, according to the news in the UK what we learn at college is the same level as american universities, that was in the newspaper so i know it can be 100% reliable but i don't doubt it much :p

  • :) I see a strange paradox. Many people say that school level in Lithuania (I'm Lithuanian) is a lot higher than in UK :D Although America and UK has got universities and colleges that are many times better than ours. :(

    I thing America is in need of, well, stupid people, who will work and won't argue. We, for example, have so much universities and colleges (about 15 for 3,5 million people), that almost 2/3 got a higher education now. Do they need it? No

  • A university gets more points in a world-wide ranking if there is a posibility to study in English. Points are also given due to vast libraries or number of publications given to scientific magazines (English preferable) etc. In my opinion Eastern Europe has nothing to be shamed about. You have to be aware that this ranking is made in USA or UK.

  • i think this is just an electric arc flying through a gas.. and all your using is a high voltage source to draw an arc in a light bulb. Electricity can go much further through a gas than just plain oxygen or nitrogen.

  • lets start off with the obvious, oxygen and nitrogen are gasses. the light bulb is filled with argon also a gas and when a high voltage source is applied the argon atoms become ionised creating a plasma, the same principle as a plasma ball, the only reason you don't get wavy streamers in my experiment is because the HV source is a very low frequency.

  • i already know that nitrogen and oxygen are gasses, but electricity cant arc very far in these gasses. maybe you should use a high frequency transformer, like a Flyback, there is many different types of high frequency transformers out there, you just need to make it run on a 555 timer, or you can just take apart a plasma globe and it already has a high frequency transformer and circuit!

  • niwakun its nor your camara its when you bring the camara too close to the plasma. As you probably would have no plasma is only created when there is large amount of energy. You are probably using electrical energy and what happens is that the electrical charge creates a magnetic field around the ionized ions from the plasma. Magnetic field + electrons + energy = disruption of electrical equipment. Just dont bring the camara up close!! Those noises are basically electrical discharge.

  • its an ignition coil from a car powered by a light dimmer switch and a capacitor linked in series, the high voltage output (about 15-20Kv) is connected to the bottom connectors of the bulb and the other wire is strapped round the envelope of the bulb, when power is applied the electrons pass through the low pressure gas and ionize it and that creates a plasma.

  • That's because it is :P although the current isn't enough to kill you 15-20Kv is gona give you a nasty kick, the low voltage mains side could kill you but this psu was in a nice plastic box so the chance of that was minimal.

  • it's and ignition coil in series with a light dimmer switch and a capacitor, the capacitor i uses was 400V at 0.47uF how ever i got a bit cocky and used 1 rated at 2100V 1.0uF a much greater voltage was obtained but it killed the ignition coil within about 5 seconds.

  • in not sure on the exact voltage but the arcs are between 15 and 20 mm so that's about 15 to 20 kv

  • Yep. You can sometimes melt through the glass of the light bulb if you persist. Different sorts of light bulbs contain different gas mixtures, and so the color will vary from bulb to bulb.

    The spark coil voltage source is easy to make.

  • the chance of that supply melting through the glass are very slim, its only in the pico amp range, i think it would take round about 5mA and above to melt through the glass, my power supply would over heat well before the glass could melt tho

  • That's what I thought, but I've melted through glass bulbs with a Tesla coil and with a van de Graaff generator, both of which source very small currents. The heat is a function of the power, which in turn is dependent on both voltage across and current through the glass. Your current is microscopic, but the voltage is very high. Note: as most glass heats up, it becomes quite conductive. Weird, no? Keep up your good work, and keep posting.
