In case I forgot to give props on this song, I'd NEARLY forgotten in the past, since the radio "forgot" too.... I am giving a belated thumbs up, I forgot it was Donnie Iris, if I even knew, it came up in a Q and A with him "Is love really like a rock"? He cracked up and never gave an answer
Please understand, that most of the music Elvis Costello wrote, sang and produced was in the late 70's. And, yes, is definitely considered as a sorta "new wave" band pioneer. One of my personal favorites along with Adrian Belew, Robert Fripp, and to name others, check out Brian Eno...very good "New wave" music....or as i call it Soft Punk.
Elvis Costello produced a lot of his own music back in the late 70's. Only in the 80's did he CO-produce music such as "Co-production of Robert Wyatt's recording of "Shipbuilding". Langer records the accompaniment while Costello oversees the vocal session. The Robert Wyatt rendition eventually reaches #36 U.K. single chart. In the Early 80's the band was known as Elvis Costello and the Attractions in which the group occasionally join multiple artist bills at large outdoor events.
Great song. I am so glad I live close enough to St. Louis to have grown up with KSHE. They played and still play this and others you don't hear anywhere else.
I still remember the first i heard this, I was 13 in 1981. The music on the radio was lack of a better word "Lame" This song had balls, everytime it came on the radio, i cranked it.
Saw these guys just out of the Navy 83 in Indialantic Florida in place call Mr Tease. What a freakin great show they put on and a time I never forget! This song cannot be played to often or too loud.....try it and you'll see what I mean...
If you want to check out a very early Donnie Iris hit song check out the Rapper by The Jaggerz. Donnie Iris wrote and sung this 1970 hit. Nothing like what he put out 10 years later but a great song to roller skate to in 1970.
@Jefgg he got played alot in Cleveland WMMS, always wondered if he was local or national, I thought Michael Stanley was huge but no one outside of Cleveland it seems knew him. Thanks to the poster of these songs.
I always thought that Donnie was a solo artist, not a band. He hit #37 in Billboard, 2-20-82. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a blessed week!
I think the first time I saw DI I was 12-13, HBO use to play live concerts, and I saw him on there. I remember his concert had an extended middle drum section to this song....as one would guess. Needless to say due to the energy of the concert and the songs I became a fan.
Donnie still makes music. If you like this check out a song he did a couple years back called "Little Black Dress". AWESOME song and Donnie is AWESOME! Saw him live 2 years ago at Johnstown's THunder in the Valley and at the age of 66 his voice was perfect and hasn't changed a bit. He can still rock scream with the best of em!
the only 2 good things to ever come out of pittsburgh were donnie iris and my aunt barb, lol. actually i wonder if donnie iris, buddy holly and elvis costello are all somehow related. wonderful song and post.
@mistermattmoose Uhmmmm how about Gene Kelly, Lena Horne, Billy Ecstein (spelling) Jeff Goldblum, Francis Dormand (academy award winning actress) ...........actually those are just a few samples of the talent that come out of Pittsburgh and it's suburbs. I love Donnie myself, saw him live, met him and got a pic with him. He's about the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet and Pittsburgh loves him! But he's not the only talent to come out of this area. Obviously I am from PA, lol.
@darsdoodles it was just a joke geez,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,actually aunt barb lived in the same neighborhood as joe namath and she's about 10 years older, she used to baby sit him. i think it was the beaver hills area or something like that.
Love this song! Always have. 'Ah Leah' was fantastic also. I remember him playin' that funky music with Wild Cherry. He wrote the 70's song 'The Rapper' by the Jaggerz. The man's just got da funk. Love it.
@stjames888 Glad you have a great marriage and that your wife is your rock, but IMO you're wrong when you say that paying for it doesn't count. Sooner or later, every guy pays for it. Either financially or emotionally or some other way. But one way or another, whether it's for love or just plain old sex, everybody pays!

@stjames888 I'm glad your wife is your rock, but IMO you're wrong when you say that paying for it doesn't count. Pretty much every guy pays for it one way or another. Either they pay for it up front, or they pay for it later financially or emotionally or some other way. They might not even be aware that they're paying. But sooner or later, we all pay! Glad you have a good marriage, though.

This song makes such a profound statment. I've been rockin' out to this since the summer of 1982. Here's the "Cliff's Notes" :
Professors & Teachers : NO
Preachers: NO
Politicians: HELL NO
Superstitions: NO
Mother Nauter: NO
Paycheck: ..."we are making temporary cutbacks in the department." (NO)
DR: "I'm sending you to a specialist", ( NO and double NO )
Lawyer: "I'm sorry, he's in a meeting. can I take a message?" ( NO ! )
Study your notes, there WILL be a test on this. Class dismissed.
