i totally agree with you. I think that by that time most people will be chipped and those who do not have this spiritual mark, well their chip will just get turned off. the not being able to buy or sell is simply a consequence of not having the mark, nothing more.

The 4th commandment is to keep the Sabbath,but people go out and buy on that day or work. It HAS to be physical otherwise how will people (especially those that are worldly and not spiritual) be able to discern who to sell to and who not to sell to. The answer to your question, there were marks put on Christian's hands and heads, in the form of branding from the Roman soldiers. Unless they accepted Caesar they could not shop from the merchants. This perfectly lines up with 666 meaning Caesar Nero in the Greek gematria.

Good question. I think more importantly, John was writing figuratively thru almost all of revelation. It's tough to pick and choose what is literal and what is not. You can only fall back on scholars who have studied in depth.

I am not sure anymore that the "physical" mark is even really true. Christians long know about it and therefore would not even take it to begin with. But it says "deceive even the elect" I think means many Christians aren't focusing on "inside" repentance, Faith and charity etc...

Yeah, I can agree with that! The only thing that I don't get is how no man will be able to "buy or sell save he that receiveth the mark." That's the one thing that makes it seem like it is physical in some way... unless they make the only days for food and shopping on the Sabbath or something...

I find it interesting still that 666 is still on the bar-codes of almost everything we buy. From coca-cola, to the iPod Touch, it's the same thing. I'm not saying that is the mark, but I find it pretty disturbing that I have to run a satanic bar-code over the scanner of a cash register where I work.
