I finally found it! I was 11 years old when this program aired in 1969. I am 53 now. I remember watching this in 1969. For a long time now I could remember the name William Windom from the credits, and I could remember Lydia so well, but for the life of me I could not remember the title of the show. It depresses me to think of how many years have passed since 1969 .... 42 years now. Where, oh where, have they gone ......
CBS aired repeats on Thursday nights in the summer of 1972, 'planth', as a summer replacement for "ME AND THE CHIMP". That fall, "THE WALTONS" premiered in its time period.
R.I.P. David Gruner 1957-2009 (in red at 3:31, unfortunately here, an unsympathetic character). His brother Mark Gruner played Jan's object of affection in the Brady Bunch episode, "A Not-So-Ugly Duckling" in 1970. That's also Richard Steele (in the maroon ski cap), who played Harold on Mayberry RFD, Mike's best friend.
I remember this series very well. I was unhappy when it was canceled. This is the only specific episode I remember though, but I remember this, especially the flag ending.
I never understood why this show didn't last. Was it the time slot? Did the general public miss the point? I'm glad I'm among the minority who thought highly of this program. The Christmas show is one that I really did remember.
@bwolfe46 my dad worked for NBC at the time and fought for this program tooth and nail to keep it on the air.. but it seemed to him that the viewers failed to see the wit , humor and the humanity behind the stories. while on the hand my uncle who worked for sheldon felt the show was too smart for it's time. don't forget that CBS picked it up for a while but at a lousy time slot...
@planthi80 Sheldon Leonard fought for THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW and won...why didn't he do the same for this program? He convinced Proctor & Gamble to stick with Rob and crew--I would think Burlington Industries would have been a pushover (I also think those Kodak and Adams Gum spots are not original).
@bwolfe46 I would say the time slot was good...Monday at 7:30, lead-in to the #1 show, LAUGH-IN. and I would say compatible with its audience. Like LAUGH-IN, it wasn't aiming at the people watching GUNSMOKE--perfect counter-programming.
