Oh wow! A Bricklin! My older sister worked for Malcom Bricklin in the 1970s. It was an interesting car. And today it is prized by collectors. I doubt that any junky 2011 Nissan or Toyota or any other look-alike cookie cutter car of today will be of any interest to collectors 40 years from now.
I saw one of those cars this summer when on vacation in Eastern Canada. I was passing through Moncton, New Brunswick, not far from where they were assembled, and saw it parked in a parking lot downtown. It was orange like this one and a real head turner, too.
Infinite Mushroom made one of the truest comments ever made below? Why do people buy ugly Japanese cars? Now even GM has redsigned their cars with the same soulless features.
We've gone from making cars that looked fast and beautiful, like the Bricklin, to misshapen boxes like the Nissan Cube, Kia Soul, and the Smart.
It is a marvel of marketing and gullibility that can make Americans get excited over cars that resemble Ladas for the proletariat albeit with slick paint jobs.
One in good condition would be more, but it is possible to find one that needs work for around this or less. You just really need to know what you are getting into like any car project.
I owned one of these cars years ago. Orange. Doors already converted to air from hydraulic. Looked good and got a lot of attention but weren't fun to maintain. Air system gets leaks and hard to find anyone to work on it. Sparse interior. Doors notorious for leaking when it rained, even after I had a custom door sealer installed by a Bricklin mechanic/fabricator guy. I bet you could find one to buy today in great condition for anywhere from $10k to $20k EASY.
Cars today look like cubes, kidney beans, potatoes, and turds. Who the hell actually buys Pontiac Aztecs, Scion xB's, Honda Fit, Smart's, and other ugly cars? The design studios are punking out today's car buyers on purpose. Cars used to be status symbols and attractive. Now, today's cars look ashamed of themselves.
The '70's may have been a controversial decade but, some of the most beautiful cars came from that era.
So true. You can't find a new car these days that doesn't make you hungry for jelly beans.
This clip prompted me to look up the Bricklin on Wiki. They are quite rare. But, as one previous owner has said here, the wing door motif of these cars, DeLoreans and others have unforeseen headaches.
@InfiniteMushroom I agree with you 100% about todays cars being ugly regardless of maker. While 70's cars were junk quality wise, they were distinct and had personality and the same for 80's cars. I have a '74 Bricklin now and would'nt trade it for any car made today.
It has a push button on the inside and outside for each door. A press of the button would raise and close the door. A lock on the outside to disable the buttons to prevent theft.
9k back in '74. That's actually very expensive if you think about it for the time. Very cool cars, and very rare.. I've only seen 1 in my life and it wasn't even up close.
Weren't the Bricklins built in New Brunswick? I was to a huge car show about a month ago in Moncton, NB and there were 3 of them there. All 3 were in showroom condition.
oh didnt know that, thanks man, well its known as the canadian car cause its the only car desined and built in canada, so kinda stupid how the sales at that time were only in america
They just felt the initial market was in America. Once the company was running to capacity they would have been sold in Canada. Just never got that far.
WoW ,learn something new everyday,i was in 4 th grade, watched lmad but never saw this car,its COOL.

Malcom Bricklin was the original importer of the Subaru - and the Yugo. Interesting fellow, sort of the Mad Man Muntz of the 1970's

I love how America's newest sports car is from Canada :)
samurphy 1 year ago
@samurphy American company. The Canadians provided tons of incentives for Malcolm Bricklin to build them there.
By the way, the Dodge Challenger is made in Canada, doesn't make it Canadian. The BMW X3 is made in South Carolina, does not make it American.

MCWEDS 2 years ago
@MCWEDS, I dunno if you want an answer but here it goes.
1)car companies aren't managed by car people, but people that rely on data instead of soul because it's more cost-effective :P
2)insurance costs, rising costs of life and bad economy kills dreams and options
3)lack of taste
4)too much rational thinking that leads to purchase of functional but eye-sore cars like the Toyota Yaris
Those are some of the reasons I can think of. Anybody have any more?

Agreed, with few exceptions, most of today's cars are bland, I like the cars from the 1950's to the mid 1980's.

i think it was very smart for mr.bricklin to switch to a 351 windsor engine after 1974 that way the car was entirely built in canada.

No, this was designed and sold before the Delorean was even thought of. A lot of similarities in the cars.

@heine71 this was 1974 and the Delorean was 1980's.So your a bit off base.
