  • Brings back fond memories of the Saturday movies we used to see as children.

  • Disney was watching this, interested in the mechanicals, and spotted an actor playing a Texas small-plane pilot being held in a nuthouse because he had seen giant flying ants. A bit part feelingly played. "Get me that guy!" So Fess Parker became Davy Crockett.

  • I love these old classic 'scary' movies. They were so much fun and so well done. Thanks for posting. Brings back GREAT memories!

  • Great 50' Sci Fi....brilliant

  • the only part that stood out the most for me is when james whitmore died at the end.im54yrs old.i felt sorry for him when i was a kid.andi started watching all his movies ever since

  • i know this AWESOME movie.i see it over and over again.the story is outstanding, the actors are best, and NO NEED,FOR COLOUR...........

  • I watched this many times as a kid. It scared the hell out of me. Thanks for posting it! :)

  • There is also an old 1950s B-movie-style computer game called "IT CAME FROM THE DESERT!" clearly based on this movie.

  • HOLY FUCK THIS WAS MADE BY THE WARNERS!?!?!?

  • "Made walking down long, dark hallways by myself almost impossible due to wondering if a giant ant would get me!"

Dont worry, pal, if giant ants were invading ur city, everyone would know.

  • Cool! Released just three months before I was born! Early role for James Whitmore (the rescuer cop). Hey, James Arness (Marshall Matt Dillon) is in it, too!

  • Cool! Released just three months before I was born! Early role for James Whitmore (the rescuer cop).

  • This scared the hell outta me when I was a little kid!

The sound of the giant ants will forever haunt me...

    *Shivers*

And thus began my small fobia for insects...Thanks alot

  • anybody else expect the cops to jump out, pulls guns and start yelling.. "Get down on the ground! Drop the doll and get down on the ground , now!"

  • Rofl those winged ants were sitting there

  • BEWARE OF THEM!

  • Them are picnic Ants...they carry away a whole Ham by himself.

  • A deserved sci-fi classic.

  • i was 11 when i first saw this scared the crap out of me

  • This is the cliff-notes version. Get the fantastic DVD of THEM, its only 7 or 8 bucks. And DVDs have crystal clear picture and sound and they last forever.

  • filming dates.. September October November 1953...released in June 1954...a true classic

  • 10/10......code1

    see you in heaven whitty....10/10

  • Happened to visit White Sands, NM a few years back while on vacation and began to imagine seeing atomic mutant ants crawling over the dunes with their creepy sound..my Top 10 list for 50's sci-fi classics.

  • Yes, I agree with "gekkjevel" you don't need multimillion dollar digital special effects to make a great sci-fi movie just a lot of imagination and some real good actiors, wihich you really don't see a whole lot of anymore. Spend more money on great actors and less on special effects.

  • She's in shock, poor kid! Great movie!

  • Fuck yeah! Fallout 3 baby

  • You Know What's Weird!?

In sweden, the title was translated to "The Spiders"

  • In Germany it was named "Formicula", which is the latin term for "ant".

  • These old horror movies are so much more creative and made with more heart than all the new movies...

  • Taint it the truth. The only smart monster movie ones recently seem to be: "The Host" from South Korea, "Cloverfield", "Dai-Nipponjin (Big Man Japan)", "Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (GMK)", "Gamera: Advent of Legion" and "The Mist". Even though it has dinosaurs, the first "Jurassic Park" wasn't too bad. Haven't seen the Japanese films: "Deep Sea Monster Raiga" or "Monster X Strikes Back" yet.

  • MONSTER X STRIKES BACK is mostly played for laughs, adn it mostly sucks. Got the DVD last month at Best Buy. Nice to see Guilala outside of TV commercials, of which he has been in lately.

  • Really, Ya think?

  • i agree

  • What is the name of an old English movie is it where a guy forces a flock of birds to bring down a propeller plane. Also in the movie the as a result of an on board fight guy fall off a blimp into a box of luggage bags. The blimp had German swastika on it i think. Also in this movie, two guys runs into a sewage tunnel full of rats. Anyone know?

  • Wow! That sounds crazy, if you figure out what film it is let me know!

  • you are talking about "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" with Harrison Ford. NOT an old english movie. it was made around 1988 or '89.

  • It's amazing how many cliches of todays sci-fi/monster movies you can already find in really old b&w movies.

Same goes for The Thing and Metropolis.

  • love james whitmore as brooks in Shawshank Redemption.... he will be missed.

  • This is why nuclear waste is bad, kiddies.

  • James Whitmore died 2/6/09. We'll miss him.

  • RIP James Whitmore 2/6/09

Them! The best of the giant bug moves!!

  • Ok, the cop in a bow tie with his arm around the girl at 2:03 looked realy, freakin creepy...lol

  • I remember this film like if it was from yesterday! Saw it when I was 9 at my fathers place and I´m really glad to see the litle girl again. Thanks for uploading!

  • Giant ants would be fairly easy to deal with. Throw rocks at their legs and they'd buckle. Not that insects this big could ever exist anyway!

  • Someone should make a T-shirt. "Giant ants are stupid, throw rocks at them!" :}

  • Okay MAJOR MAJOR SPOILER ALERT FOLLOWS: IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE, DO NOT CONTINUE READING THIS COMMENT!!!

I need to know though, why couldn't they save Ben at the end there? I know that ants have stingers that hold poison since they explained that in the movie, but aren't those at the back of the ant? It looked like the ant just grabbed Ben, or was it stinging him too?

I ask cuz Ben's my favorite character, and his fate illustrates the smart script but it's still sad to watch

  • Fallout 3, optional mission, "Those!"

    "Shoot the antenna!"

  • This movie was a classic!!!

Man,Joan Weldon was pretty hot back then.

If I had a time machine I'd go back & bang that booty.

  • Check out the sound the ants make and compare it with the bird voiced tree frog at the website midwestfrogsdotcom

  • My question is how or what machine was used to make the sound of "THEM ANTS"? Was really spooky and scary.

  • That was a loose fan belt on a car engine, believe it or not!

  • GET THE DVD!!! It is wonderful.

  • ya my dad wuz c'in a documentary bout warner bros and old cartoons. im like ho hum dis is borin. iwas in da computer, and i looked up and saw da little girl walkin around and dey were askin her name. den dey showed a scene with dat beepin sound and and da huge ants and im like: woh.ya if dis is da result of nuclear bombs, WELL DERE GOIN ON NOW!!! I SO DONT WANT DAT TO HAPPEN 4 REAL( ALDOH IT WOD B COOL)

  • man i love this film...that ant sound is forever etched into my brain!!!!and hey them hammer flicks expecially the one with them bone dissolvin ostrich blob things was great!!

  • I agree with "SUMMERFEILD 1941" This was a glorious era for this type of Movie. With all those fertile minds adapting all sorts of creatures to destroy the World and Mankind it's

not surprising that the Special Effects department's are now as good as they are. This though was "the" best time of all,it must have

been great as a Kid going to the Movie's those days.

  • Such a great film and it STILL gives me the creeps in a fun back to childhood way. Thanks...love it even now.

  • ahhh such a fun movie

  • One of the great monster movies. That scene with the blank-faced little girl suddenly screaming "THEM!" is surprisingly effective.

  • does anyone know how many people died in this movie?

  • Thank God for American Movies. I was born in England and grew up watching Great Movies like THEM, also all the other Sci-fi movies that the States produced in the 50's. British movies were boring and miserable at this time, always looked forward to these classic when the local theatre put them on. They provided an escapism from the mundane, great memories and thanks for this.

  • What about Hammer Films?

  • I grew up watching Hammer Films and loved them all!

  • Yeah we Americans it used to be creative with our films, but nowadays our movies are slapdash efforts that are easily forgettable.

  • The heyday of US cinema!

  • The hero dies screaming at the end! I love this movie.

  • This is cool, reminds me of Saturday Nites Shock Theatre.

  • thanx for posting this

  • Around 3mins the shocked girl in the chair..... It's like newt out of Aliens.

  • Thanks for posting this. Although I've never seen the original, your commentary was insightful and I very much enjoyed reading it!

  • Thanks for the comment! I sometimes think nobody bothers to read the commentary "About This Video" that is posted along with the YouTube uploaded vid. I try to include facts and trivia about the films I post to help give a feel for my editorial view.

  • I read the 'more info' too. Very interesting.

  • This is a beatifull Cold war relic, it also has elements of the culture of fear which we all know already!

  • Ha Ha! Yeah me too man. I saw this as a little kid when it first came out. My family and I all got together on saturday nights for sci-fi theater and others. Most of the time I would windup covering my eyes or hiding behind my Dads chair, but it was always fun and made great memories!

  • i remember seeing a movie like this when i was younger, giant ants or w.e but it was in color so i dont think it was this... but it looks like a great movie.

  • Maybe you are thinking of "Empire of the Ants" which was released in 1977. Basic plot: Sleazy scam artist Joan Collins tries to sell phony real estate deals down in the Florida everglades. What she and her unsuspecting buyers don't know is the area has been taken over by giant ants! It was very loosely based on a H.G Well's short story with the same title. Man, did they butcher that story line! If you like tacky giant mutant-ant films, make sure to see that one!!!

  • I've always like this movie. It's one of the monster movies my dad and I would watch on TV on a rainy SUnday when I was a little kid.

  • This is one of my favorite horror movies. It scared the crap out of me when I was a kid. I recorded the sound the ants make and play it back at night really loud. Everybody in the house yells "THEM" !!! it's funny as hell.

  • I worked in a printing company that had a machine that sounded just like the ants in this movie. I would always be yelling "THEM!" every time I had to work in that dept. Nobody else had seen the flick so they thought I was a little bit nuts. They don't know what fun they are missing!

  • Nothing beats those good, ole B&W 1950s sci-fi/horror flicks! Excellent post!!!

  • Yep, this was one of the 1st nuclear monster movies, with some more great ones to follow like "Attack of the Giant Leeches", "The Killer Shrews" and of course, "The Giant Gila Monster" LOL!

I own them all and I love them all!

    Nice post!

  • Gee... I'm jealous! Can I come over and watch your film collection? Sounds like an awesome library of great sci-fi entertainment!

  • I do have quite a collection but you can grab a bunch of them for like $20. They come in that "50 movie pack Horror Classics"

    It's 12 discs 50 movies, for under $20.

It doesn't have this film but it does have the other 3, as well as some Vincent Price films "Last Man on Earth" "House on Haunted Hill" and "The Bat"

    Well worth it!

  • I checked out Amazon; they have the set so I ordered one. Thanks for the info... I can't wait to get it and fire up some popcorn!!!!!

  • You're welcome. You'll love it!

  • Actually I signed up for a podcast called "Cult of UHF" and it has this which you could download for free and the last man on earth along with 50+ more movies. Pretty rad I thought, it always kills those long car rides.

  • hey did you know they had orginally shot the movie in color and the finale scene was suppose to be in the new york subway system, the actress who played pat was disapointed they cut the budget and went to black and white because she said the ants eyes were red blue purple, but they did get an oscar for special efeects

  • LOL. my ex-girlfriend and I would watch this film every valentines day! ha!

  • A True Classic from the 50's, and featuring a Great Actor, James Whitmore.

  • A fine, fine movie. It couldn't be remade today because the people who make the horror movies aren't interested in real drama, just gore and shock. Peter Jackson, much as I respect him, would throw in a half dozen splatter shots just for laughs. In this movie, you aren't an observer watching a bunch of losers get slaughtered one after another. You know whose side you're on from that opening scene.

  • I paid 10 cents to see this movie in a theater when I was a child. It frightened me for the week and then it was off to another movie.

  • A 'B' giant bug movie with 'A' quality poignant interludes. Very rare animal.

  • I love the guy that sings "MAKE ME A SARGENT AND CHARGE THE BOOZE!" thats the best line in a b movie ever!

  • Gotta love those B-movies! I really enjoy that character myself and I tried to think of a way to include it in this edit but it just didn't fit. I used to watch this one in the early 1960s and was always scared as a little kid; this edit is to show what bits have stuck with me over the years. Even today, when I hear a high-pitched sound, I always think of "Them!" and get the creeps.

  • yes i agree ,he is also in a I love lucy episode when comming 2 CA. pretty funny there too must of been a comedian, the helicopter headset scene isa good laugher too.

  • "THEM" scared the crap out of me at age 7,

    when THEM was first released.

    Most definately a classic.

    Thank you very much zubee

  • Thanks zubee. Absolutely my favourite b-monster movie. As you indicate it has all the classic elements and it really boils down to a fairy tale essence: the wise professor (King); the beautiful daughter (Princess); the brave knight (Young Scientist); and the dreaded dragon(Monster/Ants etc.) terrorizing the peasants. This basic plot structure is very reusable and never gets old.
