When I'm trying to do this, the first card just stays there and every other card just goes to the other side in a big packet. Is it my cards or my skills?
make sure you are using a new deck and that you are holding the cards correctly. also try riffling the corner of the deck about twenty times to loosen the corners. a special tip. pros use a special fanning deck which is thinner than regular cards and some also add "fanning powder". both are available from most on line magic shops. no matter it does take practice.
