@MrMoto1998 If you are thinking about earning money, it's not worth it. At least it's hard to earn money on it, but if you want to learn about engines and/or restore a classic engine, it's worth it.
Nice engine! Definately worn out lol. I have a model 14 that is also Hard to start. but it runs good. I Don't know why it starts so bad. I Took the carb of a 1 or 2 pull engine.
is it a model 9? thats my guess a model 8 is just a touch under 3hp so i am guessing that because this has a small 2 piece flowjet and you say its approx 3-4hp it must be a 9cu in
@kiarra00 cool! i had my 1974 16hp briggs running last night. it starts in one or 2 pulls. i was using it to belt start a stubborn old kohler i have. its a tired little kohler and its hard starting sometimes. the only problem i have with my briggs right now is the float isnt shutting off the fuel all the way right now and if floods the carb and dripps if you leave the fuel on. and the bearings are kinda loud because it satoutside for years before i bought it. its a 32 cubic inch single cyl
Sounds allright once running! I have some old engines too, my too small engines being from '54-'54 and some of the bigger ones are 1940's, the wear on some of the beariings is incredible but they still run well, as does your nice old briggs.
these old engine never die. I'm not even kidding you. The new ones you are lucky to MABEY get 10 years out of them. But the old ones just keep on running !!!
Just like the moron that called me an idiot for trying to get my Chev 350 running when I knew it had a bad bottom end. Folks can be real douches behind a monitor.
@MRkallek91 if u have time to laugh then u can go over how many comments you made about this vid. he can do what he wants with it and its immature of you to criticize how he runs it. maybe you should read the description about the engine and that he states that he knows its worn out. just laughing at my comments is a 5 year olds excuse to wind people up. get a life and stop being mean to people
runs pretty good for being woren out, I like them old briggs&strattons they'll run un till the day they dye, as in no compression left. Too bad they don't make them like they used to.
here is a tip: put lots of wd-40 on bottom dead center about half full and leave it for 2 to 3 days and run it for 2 min and change the oil and it should not smoke anymore i tried it and it works it helps to pop the rings out
i just got a 1954 B&S all it needed was a push rod for the points contacts i used a twig off a tree runs great now it came off a lawn mower its a horizontal shaft engine it supposedly has 1hp but i know for a fact it has tons of torq i ran some big stuff of it cant stall it to easy it was missing the throttle valve so i just dropped a socket in the hole it runs fine for fixed throttle
Gotta love the old B&S engines! very reliable. Like my 2 horsepower that had 3 inches of snow in it this morning, i brushed off the carb and it started 2 pullls! I didn't even clean the snow off the head around the spark plug. It has no air cleaner btw.
Im not sure what your experience is on engines but you hold the throttle open @ high end normal operation, not over rev, then adjust the high speed needle ti'll it runs smooth then let idle and adjust the idle needle (if needed) intell the engine runs smooth. Then you have the crack screw adjustment on the throttle shaft if you have to open the throttle butterfly just a bit to keep it at normal idle. If you need parts i know of someone that has parts. feel free to email me. Have a good'n :0)
i have an 8 hp briggs just like that one on a tractor that im restoring, engine needs a new governor because the flyweights on the one it has are cracked
do you have a idea on how to adjust the idle on a old (1960-1980) briggs 5 hp?
labrieexpert2000 2 months ago
@labrieexpert2000 If the fuel/air mixture screw is adjusted properly, you just adjust the small flathead screw on the throttle lever on the carb

It might have been used on walk-behind tow bars for small airplanes. I've seen a couple of them before.

Re-bore it and put in an over-sized ring set and it should start and run like its new, and it should stop the smoke problem.

Hey man I've seen 'em worse than that. It should still be able to do some
work yet. Remember the movie "Uncle Buck"? Well I've seen these that
put out as much smoke as his car and still ran!
