@beatboxcajon it all depends, man. If you want to cruise streets and bomb hills, then longer will make you much more stable. if you plan on sliding right away or moving around campus or sidewalks, or learning tricks soon, then a shorter board is more maneuverable. The most important thing i think would be to make sure you don't buy a "beginner" board. They are cheap and make it a bad learning experience. I like high speeds and carves so I started on the Landyachtz evo 41" deck.
@beatboxcajon hey man, i started out on the Longboard Larry salamander. Its definitely not a longboard and its rather short. but it worked for me because when i started i did more freestyle and didnt want to advance to much to bomb hills with a longboard. Thats just me. But i definitely recomend the Loaded Vanguard to ANY newcomers.
I don't think so. When you hold the middle of your board between your legs, THAT is a stinkbug.
Holding your board either in the front or back (for example, you can hold it in the pocket created just in front of your back foot) is legit, and not a stinkbug. That works just fine.
I can't believe people want to learn to power slide with their hands on the ground. We always learned to do all this standing up. It's not even real skating anymore if you're gonna drag your hands on the ground like a little baby. Search for Darryl Freeman videos or heydarryl and you'll see how it's done.

@hardistykids it's not that ppl are doing it because it's easier than stand up slides
When you get going 30 you can't use stand up pre-drifts very safely. Colemans such as these are much safer and easier to control and are better to shave speed before railing a corner at high speeds.
And have you ever heard of style? Obviously not, you can't add much style or variateion to a stand up power slide.
Who the hell are you to fucking say what is and what isn't skateboarding?
@pixaman56 You can add a lot of style/variation to standies (unless you mean just standup checks). You can do them heelside/toeside 180, stalefish, indy, switch, 1 footed, you can draw it out into a shuvit, you can do some crazy switch toeside 1 footed shuvit, etc., and that's just a couple soft-wheel slides. You open a whole new can of worms when you delve into tech sliding.
@Fortune2point0 I know that, I was trying to make a point to mr hardistykids ^ that coleman slides and ''hands down" slides are essential for dh and freeriding, and not just for babys like he said.
@hardistykids Lol, notice how he's wearing slide gloves too? Hands-down slides like the Coleman are the safest and quickest way to stop or slow down when you're going fast (footbraking too, when you don't have room to slide). Standies are fun, but extremely difficult to do safely at 60+KPH. Then again, I guess most people these days just don't have what it takes to go fast.
/watch?v=VlMS-fTCDd0
Watch that then try to tell me hands-down slides are for babies.
@hardistykids Bro, the man you see instructing in this video, that man is a legend. He is now 61 years old, and he skated faster and harder than all of us when we shot a movie with him. Shit changes man, and if you are as old-school as you portray you are, you would know this by now. He isn't talking about your little kiddie slides you throw on your way to 7-11, he's talking about a slide you throw going 30 mph+. Punk.
@hardistykids not real fucking skating this shit is fucking dogtown, your new tech isn't skating, it might be harder but dogtown is where its at, kick back with friends and bomb a fucking hill at 30 or 40 bitch
I have a question. Every time I go into the coleman stance, and try to slide, my back foot shoots the board way out and i get wheel wobbles. then i wreck my face haha. how do you keep your legs bent, and together and still maintain that slide?
i don't know what's up with the board's or wheel's you guy's are using but......were I'm from anything above 90a will get you sliding....effortlessly...with a good set of glove's!
Pretty much any board will do, as long as its not REALLY long. Whats important is the wheels. If you wanna get good sliding, make sure your wheels are at least 80a durometer or more. 83a (Lemon) Retro ZigZag wheels would probably be your best bet for having enough grip but still being able to slide smoothly.
@parkourmormon yeah i got a 26" arbor board and just for kicks I tried powerslidin, it's a bit of a challenge. But im still on stock wheels, 78a 65mm.
I don't understand how to come back after you've gone 90 degrees.. I just uncontrollabley keep goings into a 180 and find myself going backwards :S any help?
after you swing your right arm across your body and do your 180, rip it back across the other way. you'll need to still be going fast enough for the wheels to maintain that loss of traction. i'm sliding the 78a 85mm hawgs on an evo and i can't pendy under 25 without coming to a dead stop during the 2nd 1/2 of the pendy.
if that doesn't help PM me and i'll try to explain it in more detail.
The movement of your board comes (just like the video said) from the shoulders, hence the arm in the air. Once you have initiated the slide, and as soon as you hit 90 degrees (you body/shoulders would be facing down the hill at this point), all you want to do is turn you shoulders !BACK! PARALLEL in the direction of travel. Your board will follow, trust it!
You don't need 90 plus duro wheels to slide i can 360 flatslide on my 81a gumballs just fine. The shape of the wheel is much more important than the density. However attempting to slide with something under 80a is too much work i suggest moving up to atleast 80 if you are serious about sliding. And yes Robshook you are drunk. Bearings get devastated by sliding. The only ones i have found that last longer than two weeks are bones reds.
robshookphoto doesn't know what he's talking about. if you want to slide by harder wheels. i'd suggest something at least 90a. i use sector nine slide formula they're 95 a and its really easy to break grip they slide great. you'd have to be an expert at sliding to break grip with ur wheels so u should try harder ones
depending on your weight, you may want to try a higher durometer rating like 81a and up. I'm 220lbs and I can only slide my 78a's on really smooth surfaces like tennis courts or when im going too fast & need to powerslide to stop. I've been trying to find a weight vs durometer chart somewhere.... pretty much just buy a few sets of wheels and experiment :) make sure you run bones bearing too, other bearing can not handle the stress from sliding
i ride standard abec 7 bearings ($12.99/set) without spacers and theyre fine. bearings definitely can handle the stress of sliding. also, I am 145lbs and i can slide my 78a gumballs on anything. My friend has grippins, and he can slide them on anything. Its not the durometer.
Killerzombie: I'm guessing you have a topmount sector 9? theyre very tough to break loose. I'd start with colemans like in this video to get lots of leverage, and also try grabbing the rail towards the back of the board
hey look i can do some basic powerslides and im looking into getting a slide deck and setup. any sugestions plzz include deck, trucks, bearings, wheels and site. ANY sugestions r helpful =]
any deck is good and any trucks to wheels you should get abec noskoolz or strikers with a durometer of 83 or higher thats density of the wheels means how are hard or soft they are soft wheels have (78a) or lower so you want to get something way higher and get bearing spacers and abec's bearing
Generally, 81-88A wheels are the best for sliding. While there are exceptions, most wheels that are good for sliding are in that range.
Check out the Earthwing Superballs/Freeriders for some great sliding wheels. If you have extra money to burn, pick up the Earthwing Drifter as well, it's probably one of the best sliding board you'll ever get when combined with the Superballs.
Maybe you don't have enough speed and / or your wheels are too soft. I have the same problem, because I ride a 116cm deck with 78a wheels. Sliding to stop is hard since I try to coleman but the "pendulum" motion doesn't swing back, it stops at the first swing and I fall off.
hey I just wanted say thanks for this video, being able to control speed like this (I feel comfortable sliding at any speed now, thanks to this video, which is something I could never say about footbraking) really allows a whole higher level of enjoyment on a skateboard.
with a few months of coleman, toeside, layback and standup slide practice under my belt, I now feel confident in skating any hill, given the right timing ^_^
I'm trying to perform the Coleman Slide with a 24 inches long board (humu) and I've been having a hard time, ¿is it possible being such a short board? I haven't seen any video of humu sliding.
Yeah, if you grab the board at high speeds, and you end up losing a bit to much traction, the front wheels will lift off the ground, flipping the board over your head, possibly hitting you in the head, definitely laying you out onto the floor.
depends, rainy day its alot easier, but you dont need to much speed for a slide, it will just stop you, but if you want a long slide where you can ride it out, you need to get more speed
Yeah I met CLiff too in Berkeley. Never got to skate with him though. He's pretty nuts with a yoyo too. Used to hang out with his daughter and friends...
Cliff Coleman's a really good guy. When I was living in Berkeley in the the 90's. He invited me to slide with a group of people in the Berkeley hills. I followed his instructions on how to make a glove, and met the group the next weekend. It was a blast. Thanks Cliff!
some people prefer stiff trucks, others prefer really loose. Its a matter of personal preference, and i can only say go out and see what works for you. I have mine looser than my shortboard but tighter than my cruiser.

Maybe 88a. Soft enough to capture the speed, hard enough to lock the speed and slide.

hey I just wanted say thanks for this video, being able to control speed like this (I feel comfortable sliding at any speed now, thanks to this video, which is something I could never say about footbraking) really allows a whole higher level of enjoyment on a skateboard.
with a few months of coleman, toeside, layback and standup slide practice under my belt, I now feel confident in skating any hill, given the right timing ^_^

I can slide fine with 78a's on my vangaurd, but it'd definitely be easier with a higher duro.

The wheel shape also change something.

can someone tell me if a 78a would still do this or should i get a higher duro

I'm trying to perform the Coleman Slide with a 24 inches long board (humu) and I've been having a hard time, ¿is it possible being such a short board? I haven't seen any video of humu sliding.

Yeah, if you grab the board at high speeds, and you end up losing a bit to much traction, the front wheels will lift off the ground, flipping the board over your head, possibly hitting you in the head, definitely laying you out onto the floor.

anyone know how much speed you need to be able to slide?
deltaforce186 3 years ago
depends, rainy day its alot easier, but you dont need to much speed for a slide, it will just stop you, but if you want a long slide where you can ride it out, you need to get more speed

Thanks Cliff!

is there anything I need to adjust on my trucks before I slide?
JMo93 4 years ago
some people prefer stiff trucks, others prefer really loose. Its a matter of personal preference, and i can only say go out and see what works for you. I have mine looser than my shortboard but tighter than my cruiser.

Informative, it'll improve my game

no. its not at all like a bert slide. The bert slide is a move usually done on a bank. Its used to make a sharp turn the other way. Hardly a slide.
